The Hunter Valley: Cattle, Coal, and Wine (For Saturday, December 7, 2019) Today we take a recreational flight through Australia's Hunter Valley in Tiger Moths, Avro Tutors, or other low-and-slow aircraft. This will give us an opportunity to enjoy the wind in the wires as we practice aerobatics, do some formation flying, chitchat, and look at a part of Australia that we see only infrequently. We depart from the broad tablelands of New England, pass over the enormous open coalfields of the upper valley, follow the railroad to Newcastle and then turn down the beautiful coastal beaches to Belmont. Finally, we return over Lake Macquarie to end at Cessnock in th…

The next stop will be Parachinar (OPPC), Pakistan. Another short hop over the mountains will take us to Jalalabad (OAJL), Pakistan. We continue south-east, overfly the famous Khyber Pass and land at Peshawar Intl. (OPPS), Pakistan. The next stop will be Islamabad Intl (OPIS), Pakistan's Capitol City. After climbing again over the mountains we will reach to…

South East England Low 'n' Slow First, thanks to Gunter for his original flight plan which has been extended a little for Saturday use. This week's flight will take us on a tour of smaller GA airfields in the south east of England. We'll start at Duxford (EGSU), site of the Imperial War Museum and a popular field for warbirds. Fly south (following the M11 motorway) towards London, and weather permitting the skyline should be visible. First stop is Stapleford (EGSG), after which we turn west and fly across the northern edge of the London suburbs to Elstree (EGTR). From here the airspace gets particularly congested due to Heathrow, so we'll go around it via Denha…

Sunrise on the Lower Colorado River: Desert, Dams, Reservoirs, and Casinos Today we follow the Colorado river from Las Vegas all the way to Blyth then NW to finish up at Twentynine Palms. This flight has a distance 304 Miles with 10 landings. I'll be flying my Lancair so a plane that can do 200 mph will do fine. We will depart at 5:30 am from North Vegas. I recommend using the lights tweak as stated below for best experience. Will call the weather on Saturday if clear fine. See you then. Recommended scenery: Orbx Southern California, Fly Tampa Las Vegas, Twentynine Palms Flight Plan Here https://www.dropbox.com/s/2421tzi387xkj8d/Lower Colorado River.…

Southern Alps Low and Fast (For November 9, 2019) This is a flight through New Zealand's Southern Alps. We shall use jet fighter trainers to go low through the fjords and mountain valleys as fast as our airframes and engines and airmanship allow. To get a taste of the majesty that marks the rugged and largely uninhabited Fiordland region, we begin at Manapouri [NZMO], the small commercial field outside of Manapouri town. We fly low over Lake Manapouri and into the West Arm. There we pass the dock and water inlets for the underground Manapouri Hydro station [HYDRO], a facility that uses the 750ft drop (from the lake to the sea) to generate 800 MW of electric pow…

All Along the Watchtower - Cascade Fire Lookouts Starting from Chilliwack (CYCW), we fly into the Cascade Range on a tour of Fire Lookouts. There are 10 watchtowers in all, and six airport landings. The route finishes in Chelan (S10). The total route is 280nm and you will probably want to fly an aircraft that can cruise at 160 knts and I recommend an aircraft with good visibility to spot the fire towers. I will be flying the Ant’s T-28 Trojan. The Lancair Legacy or Vans RV-7 are also good choices.. As always, you are free to fly what you like. Recommended Scenery: Orbx NA Pacific Northwest Optional Payware Airports: Orbx 3W5…

For my use of bad language on Teamspeak. I tend to use it for either comic effect or to accentuate a point. Neither option really profits from it. It's a bit like when people say 'What??????????????????????????' or 'OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' Totally over the top. I shall endeavor to curb my tongue in future.

The Rolling Hills of Tennessee Documentation The flightplan can be found here. Note - the flight plan is in FSX. It may be (unkown) a good idea to run it through LittleNavMap and save as a P3D version for those who need it. No .gfp plan is supplied. Aircraft The route is 387nm. Any aircraft capable of about 160+kts cruise will do nicely. This leaves ~30 minutes throughout the flight for the normal "faffing about". There are 3 airstrips that require semi-STOL performance, the shortest runway is 1700 feet on grass, so choose wisely. As always, fly whatever you like. Scenery More than normal, you want to augment your default setup to make the trip worthwhile. Of co…

For this trip around the Pyrenees, we depart from Huesca (LEHC), Spain. Close to the city are the Sierra de Guara mountains, which reach 2,077 m. We fly east staying out of the mountains and land at Benabarre (LENA), Spain. The town has a population of about 1.000 inhabitants but is a center of cultural and historical attraction. From here we initially turn east but turn north very soon to enter the Pyrenees. This mountain range forms a natural border between Spain in the south and France in the north. In these mountains lies the micro-state of Andorra. The Pyrenees reach a height of 3,404 meters (11,168 ft) altitude at the peak of Aneto The range separates the Iberi…

Canaima. Angel Falls and the Tepuis of Venezuela Today we return to visit one of the more exotic places on earth. We shall fly over the Gran Sabana and the Tepuis of Venezuela's Canaima National Park, a region so remote and inaccessible that it was largely unexplored until the last century. Three years ago, we flew over the land in C-47s. Today, we shall fly a shorter route in light General Aviation aircraft and look at the area more closely. (This will be made more interesting with the release of newer and more accurate landclass and mesh. See below.) First, a note of sympathy for Venezuela. Since we last flew here the country has entered a deep and disturbing cons…

Bear Watch on Baranof – US Forest Service Cabin Tour This flight starts and finishes at Sitka Harbor Seaplane Base (A29) and will include landings at 11 wilderness cabins located on Baranof Island as well as stops at False Island, Little Port Walter Marine Station, and Port Alexander. "Fjords, glaciated u-shaped valleys, cascading waterfalls, and numerous active glaciers might exhibit the feeling of Norway, but in fact it describes the South Baranof Island Wilderness. Starting within 2 miles of the beach the landscape exponentially rises to glacier covered peaks at 4,000 feet. Peaks, though, are not the only things to feast your eyes on. Breathtaking waterfalls …

Air America and The Secret War For July 20, 2019 Mike MacKuen Today we shall fly in and out of a number of the Lima Sites located in the rugged mountains of Laos. During "The Secret War" for the control of Laos (1954-1975), the private airline Air America (covertly owned by the CIA) flew thousands of missions to connect together isolated Laotian and Hmong villages and guerilla camps in a countryside often controlled by the North Vietnamese Army. These pilots demonstrated superb airmanship in their operating into and out of small rough airstrips carved onto mountain ridges and their flying through very rugged terrain while encountering frequently awful weather of thic…
