Kenya's Great Rift Valley. HKNW-HKLY. For March 3, 2021 Today we shall fly over the Kenyan part of the huge East African Great Rift Valley. We depart from Nairobi's Wilson Airport [HKNW], the busy "working" airport of the region. We almost immediately pass over Karen Blixen's farm [BLIXEN] (now a museum celebrating her Out of Africa). Next, we see the double volcanic crater of Mount Suswa [SUSWA] and then pass over Hell's Gate National Park [HGATE]. Note the two extinct volcanos and the Olkaria Geothermal Stations. (The park, including Pride Rock and the Gorge, served as a model for the 1994 film The Lion King.) We land at Naivasha [HKNV], a large town whose main indus…

Alaska: The Kenai Peninsula and Cook Inlet The Kenai Peninsula is a large peninsula jutting from the coast of South Central Alaska. The peninsula extends about 150 miles (240 km) southwest from the Chugach Mountains, south of Anchorage. It is separated from the mainland on the west by Cook Inlet and on the east by Prince William Sound. The Kenai Peninsula has many glaciers in its eastern and southern areas. It is home to both the Sargent Icefield and Harding Icefields and numerous glaciers that spawn off them. This is a continuation or part 2 that we ran a couple of weeks ago in these parts which concluded that trip at Seward. In this subsequent excursion, we w…

The internet broke JoinFS! I don't understand much about the technical details but it seems that an internet resource used by JoinFS changed to IPv6 and this caused connection issues for many users. Peter has this morning (Sunday 21st Feb) got a test version with a fix on the JoinFS development page. It looks as though the new version is not going to be compatible with previous versions so we will all need to update our JoinFS installations. https://pmem.uk/joinfs/development.html It is probably worth checking at the end of the week in case any further updates have been needed.

The Leeward Islands TFFR-TNCM For Saturday, February 13, 2021 We take this opportunity for some low-and-slow flying in the tropical Caribbean. We island-hop from Guadeloupe northward to the famous resorts of Saint Martin. A respite from the snow and ice of the northern hemisphere. We depart from Le Raizet [TFFR], the large international airport for Guadeloupe's commercial center Point-à-Pitre. During the "normal" season, daily arrivals of large body jets disembark French and Northern European passengers who hope to enjoy the Caribbean flavors of the island. That commercial traffic uses the modern northern side of the airport, termed Pôle Caraïbes. We shall leave fro…

Eire, the land of the little people. Liposhauns..er, Leopardchauns, you know the ones. I couldn't get enough slots at Dublin Intl so we'll have to start at an airport out of town (Mmm, a bit like Ryanair after all) There are several places we can and will, stop off for a glass or two of the black stuff (Even Americans will know I mean Guinness) The trip is about 250nm, a few airports big enough to accommodate CJ4s etc but the rest of the stops they will be hard pressed. Something along the lines of a Pimpisstrel or Gravel type thing would be appropriate. Or W.H.Y. Flight plan HERE USA East server 19:00hrs UDT

Escape to the Aegean For Saturday January 16, 2021 We depart from Athens to tour the Cyclades Islands in the middle of the Aegean. These include the hot tourist hotspots of Mykonos and Santorini as well as the quieter more "local" islands. We conclude by visiting Ikaria on the way to our final destination Samos. While the Greek Islands are in "off season" mode, the relatively temperate climate might be a welcome change for snowbound pilots. With a strong dose of imagination, we can "get away from it all." We begin at Dekelia-Tatoi [LGTT], a near-Athens air base and civilian general aviation airport (and home to long-time AVSIM contributor Vassilios Dimoulas). After t…

Four Corners and the Need for Speed For December 5, 2020 Today we tour the Western United States centering on the Four Corners region. This is the West where, the Coen brothers' Buster Scruggs informs us, "the distances are great and the scenery monotonous." In reality, this is a vast and stunningly beautiful country that cries out for speedy aircraft. Luckily, we can employ military trainers, warbirds, and corporate jets to do the job. [I have designed an event that should suit the capabilities of our several simulators. Hope it works out.] We begin at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport [KBJC], commonly known as Jeffco. This is a very busy general aviation and cor…

Starting from Sedona we head west 180nm to Las Vegas (KLAS) where pilots may elect to perform an ILS approach and landing. The next leg is the longest of the tour and will take us to the Pacific Ocean and a landing in beautiful Santa Barbara (KSBA). Plan for a cruise altitude of FL420 for this leg. The final leg will be flown at dusk with views over the Los Angeles basin with the city lights extending towards the mountains as we head south for the final landing at San Diego (KSAN). A little bit of Spain, France, and the Mediterranean Sea We depart from Girona (LEGE), Spain, overfly the city, and head west. After passing a lake, we turn north and land at Seo de Urgel (LESU), Spain. It is the gateway to Andorra! A little further north and up in the Pyrenees, we land at Altisurface D'Aleu (LFSO), France. Considering the slope of the runway, you want to land at Runway 10 and depart from 28. Take extra care not to taxi into the grass, you may get stuck! We turn east again and search for the Château de Montségur. The next landing will be at Salvaza (LFMK). After departure, we overfly the Cité de Carcassone, an extra circle around this old town…

Aircraft with an average cruise speed of 170kts would be good. Add the requisite faff time and we should be OK for our allotted 3 hours. Starting at GVAN we'll be skipping over the ocean like a stone. (Mmm, good line that, I'll see if I can use it. Maybe in a song.) our final landfall will be BRV, a challenging approach for those that haven't been there previously. 😒 As far as MSFS is concerned there are a couple of freebie airports to add a small flourish, but don't get too excited! They are: Amilcar-Cabral and Aeropuerto-internacional-nelson-mandela Incorporated as an overseas department of Portugal in1951, the islands continued to campaign for independe…
