Great Basin national park is an out of the way park in remote Eastern Nevada, near the Utah/Nevada border. I decided to expand my Ortho scenery with what drive space I had left so I could cover almost the entire desert southwest and west Texas. I have included a map of my Ortho coverage.... John

Among the civil (commercial) aircraft manufacturers, there exist the BIG two (Boeing/Airbus) and the small two (Embraer/Bombardier). And, within the small two, Embraer's rise from a small and insignificant Brazilian company to its currently dominant position in the Regional Jet market, is a remarkable success story. The company (founded 1969) is now the 3rd largest producer of civil aircraft after Boeing and Airbus - with an impressive market-share of the global market. Moreover, following Airbus's majority acquisition of Bombardier C-Series, Embraer has also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Boeing for joint ventures of its own aircraft and services. …

The British aviation pioneer, Geoffrey de Havilland, founder of the de Havilland Aircraft Company, has left an indelible impression on early aviation and aircraft development. Just like the Wright Brothers, Geoffrey and his (younger) brother Hereward, between 1909 and 1912, tested (and improved) many aircraft designs, leading to the establishment of a British Altitude Record, in 1912, of 10,500', with an aircraft of his own design (the B.E.2). Hereward was the test pilot. Produced later on, Geoffrey's "Wooden Wonder" (the de Havilland Mosquito) has been considered one of the most versatile warplanes ever built. And, he was also the champion of the DH Comet, world's first …

Following on from my previous post (here) there were more A340 flights to do, Air Mauritius use their A340-300's for the service to FACT, MAU843, leaving late afternoon and arriving late evening. This was flown before FSDG released their marvellous rendition of FACT so I'm using the NMG one. Looking at our aircraft from the terminal, lovely green rolling hills in the background. Pretty little Air Sechelles A320 parked up but nearly ready to go. Company regional service bringing more pax to the airport. Pushing back. As we taxi away the earlier Airbus takes off int he background. Looking out of my window at the coastline. And again, …

Following on from my previous post (here) and after my jolly down to Milford Sound (here) it was time to move on. Air New Zealand run their B789's to China, specifically, Shanghai. ANZ289 leaves Auckland just before midnight, arriving in ZSPD around 7am. Taxiing away from the terminal Shortly after takeoff looking at the city. After some 11 hours over the water at night, here we are descending into Shanghai. Really liked the reflections and shadows in this pic. Final Approach Looking at the countryside Fantastic detail in the flaps/speedbrakes Taxiing towards Terminal 2. Unloading... You'll be very excited to know that I f…

Comparing and contrasting two birds with two different missions, both freeware that work in Xplane11.31. I like just having the Falcon 20 because no one has modeled it to any degree, and the Falcon 10 and 20 were used by IASCO, the Japan Airlines training school that supported my old home airport, Napa airport, for many years before they switched to King Airs. IASCO's commitment to flight training allowed Napa to become the popular destination it is today with the Jet Set, and indirectly launched my career in the hotel industry by putting us on the international scene. One of their pilots was a judge in my Lutheran school science fair, and I did a project on the R…

Lufthansa has recently introduced (to somewhat mixed reviews) its new livery, changing the colors of its iconic 100-year-old logo - the stylized flying Crane inside a circle. The background circle color has been now changed from yellow to blue (and the color of the Crane from blue to white). The century-old (previous) logo was first created by the German architect and designer Otto Firle for Deutsche Luft-Reederei (DLR), Lufthansa's predecessor. DLR had started service on February 5, 1919, exactly 100 years ago, to the month, from today. The previous livery was highly regarded in the aviation world (and will be missed) as one of the most beautiful in the skies. While, man…

Aerobask's great freeware Robin, have not flown one of these in a sim since a Robin I flew in MSFS. Also the Spad, aircraft of Eddie Rickenbackers Hat in the Ring squadron, greatest American Ace in WW1 who remembers the Allies paying tribute to the Red Baron and dropping wreaths in the age of air chivalry, also practiced by some German fliers in WW2, described in the book by TD Calnan, survivor of WWII's POW camps and Colditz castle. Last is the Swift Motorglider out of Marana Arizona near Tuscon. A real Swift was based there that I was invited to purchase but I could not find a hangar to rent anywhere within 100 miles of my home in Phoenix. Last, we had a foot o…
