Doing the best to fly as real as it gets, I wanted to experiment the last approved way in April 2026 to make the San Diego Bay tour. FAA has closed the at-or-below-500-feet below Lindberg departure, so the VFR corridor + 1'000 feet with North Islands tower + 180° at Point Loma seems to be our last chance. I picked MSFS2024 (Beta SU5 1.7.22.0), the Carenado Dakota, my Foreflight iPad app and let's go!

After a couple of days in the middle of the desert, it’s time to fire up the engine again. Today, we’re heading all the way east — from Hawtah, a small airfield operated by Saudi Aramco, to Muscat in Oman. Flight time was 4:40 hours, and honestly… it was a boooooring one. I’ve seen the desert and sand in all their variations — and that’s exactly what I’m going to show you.

Before leaving the air-conditioned airport office, let’s take a quick look at the flight plan. Originally, I had planned to follow the Silk Road eastbound. But due to the current war situation and the closure of Russian and Ukrainian airspace, I had to divert far to the south before turning east. That’s why I now have to cross the Arabian desert.
Today, we need to stay well clear of the Persian Gulf — and of course the Strait of Hormuz. So, we’ll remain mostly within Saudi Arabian airspace, with the United Arab Emirates to the north, before entering Oman. From there, we’ll cross the Hajar Mountains and begin our descent into Muscat.
And of course — never go flying on an empty stomach. Today’s choice: dates.

Avgas was surprisingly cheap — apparently supplied via a nearby pipeline. So I topped up the wing tanks and the center tank, completed the walkaround and…

…took off with a 12-knot crosswind.

The wind was a bit tricky today. We had an annoying headwind — the last thing you want when flying over such a dull landscape.

But our plane does look beautiful, doesn’t it?

According to Windy, conditions are much more favorable at higher altitudes. So we climbed to 16,000 ft until we finally picked up a tailwind. At this altitude, fuel burn is about 7.6 gallons per hour. With 90 gallons on board, we could almost fly forever today.

Sand, sand, sand… everywhere you look. It really gets monotonous!

Two hours later, the scenery changed slightly — but in the end…

…it’s still just sand.

If you take a closer look at the horizon, you can spot the Persian Gulf — just a thin bluish line in the distance.

After three hours of flying, we finally approach the Hajar Mountains in Oman.

It’s great to see something other than flat desert!

Nature can be surprisingly artistic at times.

Due to the current situation, traffic in Oman is quite light, so we were cleared for a visual approach. Here we are entering right downwind for Runway 08R — the airport is already visible on the horizon.

After spending a couple of days dealing with diarrhea at a Red Sea resort, it’s time to continue the journey. Today, we’re heading further east — flying from Marsa Alam in Egypt to Al Hawtah in Saudi Arabia. This means crossing the Red Sea and heading towards Medina, then continuing along the Tropic of Cancer through the Arabian desert to Hawtah, a small town shaped by the oil industry. Saudi Aramco operates a small airfield there — and that’s our destination for today.

Before departure, it’s time for some flight planning — and, even more importantly, a regional dish. I prepared a flatbread with hummus, cucumber, tomato, and lamb, topped with roasted dates and seasoned with olive oil, parsley, and mint. It was absolutely delicious — highly recommended!

Let’s fuel up and do the walkaround.

Passing some holiday resorts… and coincidentally, I’m flying right over the one where I spent my honeymoon with my wife ten years ago!

A few ships below us…

…and after about an hour, we reach the Arabian Peninsula.

Volcanic mountains line the coastline.

No trees, no fields, no meadows.

Today’s cruising altitude is approximately 9,000 ft.

Every now and then, you can spot airfields in the middle of nowhere — most of them belong to oil companies and serve nearby drilling facilities. The dark hills below are made of basalt — clear evidence of volcanic origin.

Another hour later, we pass the city of Medina. Can you spot the minarets?

Oooh, what’s that? Towering clouds over the desert! Still far away, but clearly right along our route.

Following Highway 40 further east. We’re now flying almost exactly along the Tropic of Cancer.

Another 30 minutes later — rain! I never expected that, and there was no indication in the weather briefing for this flight (only a few thunderstorms were reported further north). At first, I thought it was a glitch in MSFS 2024 live weather, but a quick check on Windy confirmed that everything was accurate. So yes — it was actually raining in the desert. Wow!

Flying through rough weather with strong turbulence — winds shifting from 270° to 020°, gusting up to 35 knots. Unfortunately, Hawtah Airport doesn’t provide ATIS or METAR data, but Riyadh Airport, about 110 NM away and the nearest reporting station, had already dropped to MVFR conditions.

After passing through the weather front, visibility improved and the winds settled somewhat. Here we are on short final into Hawtah, with a 12-knot crosswind.

Join me on my trip around the globe in the fabulous Piper Comanche. I really hope I’ll complete the journey one day… or maybe not. Let’s see — and let’s skip the blah!

The first leg starts in Munich, Germany — or more precisely, in Oberschleißheim (EDNX), just north of the Bavarian capital. Today, we’ll be flying to Lido Airport in Venice, Italy. Estimated flight time is about 90 minutes.
 

It’s Easter, and spring has finally arrived. Time to get ready for the big adventure.

With a 22-knot headwind, the takeoff roll was pleasantly short.

Waving goodbye to my hometown. You can spot Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche near the wingtip.

A few moments later, we’ve passed the suburbs and are flying over Lake Starnberg. The Alps are already visible on the horizon.

Passing the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, right on the border with Austria.

After entering Austrian airspace, we pass overhead Innsbruck’s controlled airspace and continue southeast toward the Brenner Pass, one of the most important Alpine transit routes between Germany/Austria and Italy.

Just a few minutes later, we’ve already left Austria, and Italy welcomes us with a stunning view of the Dolomites (Langkofel / Sasso Lungo).

Time to continue south. Only a few minutes later, we’ve crossed the Alps, and the Adriatic Sea comes into view. Venice is already straight ahead.

Today it’s time to leave the European continent and head for Africa. Our route takes us from southern Greece across the Mediterranean to Egypt. We’ll follow the Nile southbound for much of the flight, passing Cairo and the Pyramids, as well as Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. Then, for the very first time since the beginning of this journey, we’ll turn east and continue towards the Red Sea. Today’s destination is Marsa Alam Airport — a place in the middle of nowhere, mainly serving nearby holiday resorts.

Before heading to the airport, it’s time for a typical Greek breakfast. Today, I went for Greek yogurt with nuts, raisins, almonds, and plenty of honey — I love it! As for the flight planning — as you can see, it’s going to be a long day in the sky.

Here we go!

Turning south and climbing along the mountains up to FL120. So yes — we’ll need oxygen again for the Mediterranean crossing.

One last look — and goodbye to Europe. This is where the tailwind kicks in: 37 knots, giving us a very decent ground speed.

Cruising over the sea — the engine is running like clockwork.

After 90 minutes over water, Africa appears on the horizon.

From here, we can simply follow the highway all the way to Cairo — no need for a moving map.

One hour later, the Pyramids come into view — the Pyramids of Giza, of course.

Cairo in the background — one of the world’s megacities and the largest city in Africa, with around 10.3 million inhabitants.

Shortly after passing Memphis, we can see the Pyramids of Dahshur.

And finally, the Meidum Pyramid. Having been a flightsimmer since FS2, I can only sit back and marvel at how far flight simulation has come…

As the shadows grow longer, we finally pass Luxor and the Valley of the Kings.

Now we’re finally on an easterly course — and we need to hurry to reach Marsa Alam before nightfall.

A beautiful sunset reflects off our Comanche, and the Red Sea is already visible on the horizon.

Turning final at Marsa Alam. That was a long flight — about 3:45 hours, if I’m not mistaken.

Welcome to the fourth leg of my journey around the globe. This time, our Comanche takes us from northern Greece to the very south — or, to be more precise, from Corfu to Chania, Crete. In total, it’s about 320 NM, and on a normal day it would be a long flight. But today, we have a strong tailwind blowing to the southeast at around 40 knots at FL120. This allows us to complete the route in under two hours! That means an average ground speed of 170 knots — wow!

Before departure, I prepared a typical Greek dish called kotopoulo me laxanika — basically chicken with vegetables, olive oil, lemon, and garlic. As mentioned earlier, oxygen is required for today’s flight, and the route takes us along the Ionian Sea coastline to the south, across the Peloponnese, and finally straight to Crete.

It’s still early in the morning here in Corfu. Time for a quick briefing and the walkaround.

While checking the engine, I got this message. I had already noticed that it was running a bit rough during the previous flight, but I assumed there might be other reasons. I didn’t expect a cylinder issue, especially since the engine is still relatively new. So I asked the mechanic to take a look at it.

And we have a liftoff! Woohoo! Even though I’ve used this addon quite often, I had never noticed the abandoned Antonov An-2 sitting off to the side of the apron.

And… almost 200kts ground speed! Well — that’s almost the speed of light for a single piston engine. Okay, we do have a strong tailwind… but still — it’s a Comanche! Try this with your Cessna 150! Phew, Phew Muddafakas!

And after just 90 minutes, it’s already time to begin the descent into Chania.

ATC gives me vectors for a left downwind and a visual approach, of course.

It’s clearly not high season yet — only two jets are parked on the apron.

One last shot before it’s time to head to the airport office and pay the landing fee.

Couple of notes that probably aren't news, but are interesting in my first flight:

I never realized that this is one of the few GA twins where the pilot sits well ahead of the engines, so visibility is at least as good as any single engine. Seems even better than a high wing Cessna! Huge bonus for me as I am DEFINITELY a sight seer 🙂 

Take offs and landings seem extremely reasonable, with no overtly tricky behavior so far. 

This thing will overheat in no time at all: tightly cowled engines with not-big enough air inlets, and no cowl flaps / aux cooling.

So you need to get it fast and KEEP it fast to get enough airflow to keep it happy, particularly during departure and arrivals. This is somewhat familiar from my time with the TorqueSim SR22T.

It's very difficult to slow down, so I'm pretty sure shock cooling is a thing on this plane...?

I'm halfway thinking I should just do overhead breaks for every landing so I can keep it cool until I enter the base leg. 🤣

So far, it handles quite nicely, even with significant overbank and at least a few G's for that overhead break. 😉 

I think my only question so far is that, like the Comanche, the thing just doesn't seem to need any rudder at all, even at low speeds. Anyone know anything about that, relative to many other Hi Fi addons in multiple sims...?

Well, signing off for now -  I'm off to do a few more laps. Great addon of a very interesting aircraft!

I've also been busy painting for Black Square (along with TimHH) - we made all the default liveries in the C208, not to mention the dozen or so uploads.  We'll do them for the Commander 114 and most likely many Black Square projects moving forward.  I also try to make one or two paints for any new product that comes out as long as it's a General Aviation aircraft.  That's where my heart lies.  I'm not a huge fan of airliners.  But I will get the PMDG 737-700 whenever that arrives.  Maybe I'll even try a paint!

Anyway, here we go!

It's amazing the contrast in a sunny Syracuse, NY flying to a dreary Waterloo, Ontario Canada!  This is the default CJ4 with Verticalsim KSYR and Astralis CYKF - both sceneries very nice and detailed would recommend! (Same with the aircraft!)

I thought NY02 airstrip was fictional, but it's not.  It's a raceway AND a runway.  Mountaintop Airport has nice great freeware at flightsim.to.  I flew the turbine Bonanza late fall out to 57B, just a superb little freeware strip SW of Bar Harbor, Maine

I recall having great weather to start but ran into a thick cloud layer and had to descend VFR below it earlier than expected.  The turbine Bo is a true gem of a plane!  

57B with a runway length of 2400 ft, could potentially accommodate a small bizjet like shown... but really it's better for piston singles or turbine singles/twins with reverse pitch

I flew the payware CJ3 from Windsor Ontario (CYQG) to Augusta Maine back in the middle of winter.  I really liked this pic above Buffalo, NY

I really enjoyed the A2A Aerostar's evolution as they updated it in early access.  I flew it from CNC4 (Guelph Airpark as seen in Flight Chops videos!)

I took a direct headwind flying 350nm to Chicago Exec KPWK, crossing vast portions of Ontario, Michigan and Lake Michigan - it was one of my longer GA flights this last season.  I had a stiff crosswind on final as seen here eek

I had picked up the Taog 500C last year (I think?) - it's got the best helicopter flight model I've seen yet in any sim.  And it supports the TDS GTNxi with HTAWS.  I'm looking forward to their Dauphin.  Here I am landing downtown LA

Here I am again flying out of Windsor (airport by Dyffler Direct) - really nice airport and I own his Detroit and Windsor scenery as well!  Black Square Velocity XL is shown in the pics - very fast slippery plane with no speed brake or flaps!  

Apparently I flew a lot more in Canada over the past 6 months!

I remember this flight...  A really low IFR Fargo, ND to Brainerd, MN (KFAR - KBRD).  Both airports freeware at the usual place.  I ended up performing a circle to land due to winds.

This is my goto for capable winter flying.  I would also love the Aerostar but it's not FIKI capable and is a bit slower aloft.  A2A is apparently considering making a turbocharged version with de-ice boots.  That would be amazing!

This is my absolute favorite paint I've ever done, for the Black Square A36 TC.  (you may have seen it on my profile pic at flightsim.to).  I flew from KMHT to KPVD (I bought the Dreamflight version which imo is the best for visuals and performance)

and welcome to the third leg of my journey around the globe. This time, we’re flying from Benevento, in the heart of southern Italy, to the Greek island of Corfu. Today’s flight is rather short at around 85 minutes, but since my Comanche needs a fuel stop before continuing further south, I checked fuel prices along the route — and Corfu turned out to be a great option.

As always — never go flying when you’re hungry! So I prepared a typical (and very simple) Italian dish: spaghetti aglio e olio. It can be quite spicy — and I love it! One espresso later, I was in the perfect mood to finish flight planning and jump into the cockpit.

Preflight preparations were quickly completed, and just a few minutes later, I was leaving Benevento behind.

Thirty minutes after takeoff, we’re flying overhead Taranto. Too bad I’m already at 8,000 ft — the city looks much more beautiful than it does in this screenshot.

While flying over Apulia, I spotted the Nardò Technical Center, owned by Porsche. It’s huge!

Ciao, Italia! You can already see the Balkans on the horizon.

After about 30 minutes over water (with a 30-knot tailwind!), I’m already entering the VFR pattern for Corfu Airport.

If you take a closer look, you can even spot the sunshades on the beach.

The runway is just off the wingtip — and if you look closely, you can see an Airbus on short final.

Tower warned me of a 15-knot crosswind — the maximum demonstrated crosswind for the Comanche is 17 knots.

Another less-than-perfect landing later, I’m waiting for the follow-me car to escort me to general aviation parking.

These shots are stills taken from an OBS Studio through-the-VR-lens video of a short flight flight from EBOS Ostende in Belgium, to EGKK London Gatwick in UK.

From a VR point of view, there is an added dimension to this aircraft as it has, of course, a third and vital crew position - the Engineer station.

Here's a shot of the pilot/copilot positions:

The Engineer's station is at the right of the shot above.  And opposite the Engineer's back, behind the Captain's seat are the circuit breakers.  And in amongst the circuit breakers, it turns out, are these two vital switches - which I had never noticed until @P_7878 mentioned them.  They basically turn on the Localiser/ILS systems:

And I had previously tried maybe twenty 'cold and dark' flights, all failing at the last 5 miles when the Localiser and ILS systems 'didn't respond'.   I am very grateful to the fine folks on the forum for their help in helping me retain my confidence in flying the sim's excellent tubeliners...and in stopping me jumping out of the window in frustration!!

When I demo the sim in VR or 2D to friends and family, it is usually that the sun patches move around as the aircraft turns that wows them the most .  I still find it pretty cool myself!

Terrible photo, but here's the bit that had eluded me for so many flights - I have two green lights to the left of the red handle  (ALT Hold and Localiser) and one red (Glide Slope capture) as the aircraft approaches the airport in the distance.  Hard to see on the photo, but the Localiser and Glide Slope yellow guides on the artificial horizon instrument are now also active:

And now the red Glide Slope light is green and the red Alt Hold light indicated that it is no longer active: we're on our way down!:

The journey continues! And this will certainly be one of the most scenic flights of my trip around the globe. We’ll be flying from beautiful Venice across Tuscany towards Rome, then continuing on to Naples and the Amalfi Coast before landing in Benevento, near Naples. I almost forgot how big Italy actually is — today’s flight time was nearly four hours!

I’ve really been looking forward to this leg — and thankfully, the weather was on my side. When it mattered, we had a tailwind of almost 20 knots, and there wasn’t a single cloud to spoil the view. And what can I say? The Italian landscape is so diverse that it never gets boring.

Alright, before we jump into the cockpit, we need to do the flight planning. To get into the right mood, I baked a Tuscan nut cake (Panforte di Siena) and made myself a cappuccino.

Here’s the route for today.

Goodbye, Venice! I will definitely come back one day...

A few minutes later, we’re passing Chioggia — basically like Venice, but without the tourists.

Another twenty minutes later, we pass the city of Bologna (which also has a beautiful freeware airport, by the way)...

...and cross the Apennine Mountains towards...

...Florence. One of Italy’s most beautiful cities. Can you spot the hot air balloons below?

Florence is the capital of Tuscany. A few moments later, we’re flying over San Gimignano — a town with a long history and great wines.

Shortly after that, Siena comes into view. I love this city and have been there several times. It’s great to see that Asobo recreated the cathedral.

As we head further south, the landscape changes dramatically. On the way to Rome, there are quite a few volcanic craters that have turned into lakes over time.

Thirty minutes later: Rome! The Eternal City — absolutely! You can see Vatican City ahead of us.

On the way to Naples… wait! The air starts to smell like rotten eggs. Was that me? Maybe! Or maybe it’s the Phlegraean Fields right in front of us — a volcanic area considered a supervolcano. But since I’m sitting at my desk at home, it was probably me after all. Still, if you ever visit Naples, you’ll definitely notice the sulphur smell from the Campi Flegrei or Mount Vesuvius.

Napoli, here I come!

Napoli, bella Napoli — home of pizza!

After a wide circle around the city centre, we continue towards the island of Ischia, just off the coast. What a beautiful place!

And one more highlight on the route: Capri! That’s where I had the most expensive scoop of ice cream in my life.

Finally, the Costa d'Amalfi (with Mount Vesuvius in the background)! I spent ten days there last year — one of the most beautiful places on earth.

However, every flight must come to an end. This time, it’s Benevento Airport near Naples. Although it’s primarily used by ultralight aircraft, it’s also perfectly suitable for my Comanche.

I hope you enjoyed this part of my journey. I can only encourage you to visit these places — whether in MSFS or, even better, in real life. Italy might just be the most beautiful country in the world!
