Richard Harvey

Lake Tahoe

September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

Got this from AVflash today. Couldn't stop laughing. Thought I might share it with you guys.Enjoy!LAWN CHAIR LARRY RELIVED: On July 2, Adam Savage was contracted by anAustralian TV company to re-create the flight of Lawn Chair Larry for an upcoming special on urban legends. You may remember the story of Larry Walters, who in 1982 tied more than a few helium balloons (about 45) to his lawn chair in the hopes of hovering above his backyard. Walters ended up over the Pacific Ocean where he was rescued ... after floating over Los Angeles, through LAX's airspace and reaching 16,000 feet. Savage's flight took him to a relatively modest 50-100 feet and after 12 minutes of film…

I'm a recent Fly12k to Flly!II (Mac to PC) converter. I would like to add ILS to the Palm Springs airport so as to keep from crashing on manual approaches. First, can this be done? Secondly, can it be done relatively simply? Or, has something like this been done already and I'm just not aware of this? Any help with this would certainly be appreciated! :-)Private email is okay with me if you wish.John [email protected]!2K MAC/Fly II PC UserPalm Springs, California, USA

Help! I was flying my PMDG 757 on a scheduled flight from KCMH to KPHX, and had just broken out on top. The clouds suddenly started changing from the beautiful "cbbroken" types to the chintzy Fly!! defaults (one thing: Fly!2K had better weather than Fly!II)! I then got a "FOG.raw file not found" error, and the sim crashed to desktop.I did a search of the forum for the subject, and found Rich Harvey's reply to someone experiencing that error to the effect that FOG.raw was an integral part of startup.pod, and that the error either means that the .pod file is missing or corrupted. So, I reinstalled Fly!II. Now, immediately after the Pilatus startup screen appears, the sc…

After reinstalling Fly II I have downloaded the TBM 700 at least 12 times both from the ROTW site and the Avsim Library. I place the files into the FlyII Aircraft Directory as I had in the past before reinstallation, no problems then . The TBM 700 shows up in the Aircraft selection page. Once I select the TBM to fly ,the screen goes black and the following message appears. I am then returned to the Windows screen. I have not changed anything in my software or hardware prior to or after reinstallation of Fly II.Subsystem is not registered (Tbmf)File susbystem.Cpp line 254 Checking the QTFO file I get the same message as above except for the addition of Error=2 (no such fi…

  8. With info provided by JR Ewing, I have added missing Outer Marker and Middle Marker beacons, adjusted DME transmitters, and worked to resolve frequency conflicts at the following NoCal airports:LVK - Livermore I-LVKMOD - Modesto I-MODOAK - Oakland I-OAKRDD - Redding I-RDDSAC - Sacramento Executive I-SACSCK - Stockton I-SCKSFO - San Francisco I-SFOSJC - San Jose I-SJCMRY - Monterey I-MRY & I-MTBSMF - Sacramento International I-SMF & I-HUXMRY and SMF have the dreaded reciprocal approach conflicts that are sometimes caused by identical frequencies in Fly!II. They are not perfect, but I have included options to make them operational. Study the Readmes carefully.

After spending some time in The Other Sim's choppers, I decided to hop back into Fly!2's Bells for a bit and do some more practicing. I had forgotten the size of those panels!!! Is there some cfg file I can edit to reduce the panel so I can sit in the cockpit and see the panel and still see outside too? The choppers are difficult enough for me to fly as is.... never mind not being able to see outside. Thanks. Uh, strangely enough, I didn't remember the panels as being so large. Maybe there was a fix that I forgot to reinstall??-Lindy :-wave

  11. Hi All,I have just uploaded an almost complete database update (minus COMM and Airways) to the library. It adds a few more airports and runways, corrects existing ILS and adds over 15 new ILS to the database. Over 250 waypoints have been added and all waypoints now reflect the 13 Jun 2002 Australian Enroute Supplement. TACANs have been added, but I don't think Fly 2 can use TACANs yet???I will upload all of my taxiways tomorrow (over 250 airports).Cheers,Danny VickersAustralian Fly! Group

Richard Harvey did not reveal anything new. He simply reminded us that FLY3 did not have funding. He is still committed, like all of us, in helping out. The aircraft developers may or may not be with us, but let's face it, if we get a few more quality planes like the citabria, the 757, the cherokee, and the tbm700, we've got plenty of planes. So let's not forget that the recent threads only emphasized the fact that there are still plenty of us still committed to FLY2. If this spirit continues, several things might happen: the sim will eventually be picked up by a publisher, the sim will eventually become open source, or it will continue to get small but important changes b…

I'm getting ready to do a major hardware upgrade and I thought I'd ask the group if there is any REAL advantage to partitioning my HD into multiple drives. I'm going to be using an IBM 41GB ATA100 drive with Win 98 SE as an OS. I've read posts where people have setup a small partition just for the OS in case of having to do a Windows reinstall but it seems to me if I have to reinstall the OS, I'm going to have to reinstall the applications anyway. So what is the advantage of partitioning a drive this "small"?

....... because I've been busy learning "the other sim." And I've been really enjoying that other sim quite a bit. Then just this evening, I loaded up Fly!2, picked a 3rd party airport that I knew I liked (Chillicothe, I think it was..... and BTW the default startup there has your plane parked nose up to a fence! Any way around that?) Sorry I digress.I set myself up at Chillicothe in the Malibu (sorry, Sahara) at dusk and just took off. I flew over some lovely mountainous scenery. Using the Vector Map, I located a nearby airport and headed for it. The plane kept acting as if it was being bounced around by winds -- I did not set any weather parameters -- and possibly,…

I am still trying to access the Fly2 multiplayer server, and "no joy." Since Monday, I have been seeing the "server unavailable" message for the test server, and no response at all from the main server. The multiplayer "client" is apparently trying to locate the main multiplayer server, but I just keep seeing "checking" in the dialog box. The client is not finding the main server, or the server is not reporting back an unavailable status. Is everyone else still having this problem?Richard Harvey, can you help? Thanks much!!Wayne
