I'm working on a Bermuda scenery, and I'm trying to model the Wyndham hotel in Southampton. As you can see in these pix, the hotel is situated on a rock promontory above the atlantic ocean with a pair of sandy coves on the sides. I'm trying to represent this elevation in the sim by making LWM flattens for the water at 0m, and at the 10m elevation of the peninsula. Despite the fact the the two polygons are almost touching, I'm not getting the sharp elevation changes I'm looking for, rather I see a 45 degree pitch that deforms the land and the water somewhat.Any tips? Would I be better off making VTP3 polygons? Thanks for any tips!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122…

Thanks to Holger's advice, I did manage to get my DEMs resampled. When I enter LOD Auto, I get most of the boundary of the original dem. When I try to enter a LOD other than Auto I get only a part of the dem resampled -- smaller as the LOD goes higher. That might be okay -- except I can't figure out how to control which part I'm getting. It will probably help to mention that the DEMs are only 1:250,000, and that's all I've found for the area I'm interested in. (N74, W88) What I'm trying to do is build an airport in a location that is proposed for a real airport, and I'm starting to think the earthworks one will be easier.

Hi,I just wanted to get into converting USGS elavation data to flight simulator, but it looks like there are no tutorials for the current situation available. :(The link for DEM data mentioned in the FS2004 Terrain SDK (http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/glis/hyper/guide/1_dgr_demfig/index1m.html) isn't available anymore. It looks like that all USGS elevation data is obtainable from the new Seamless Server only. But that's where the problem starts. The seamless server offers so many elevation data formats that I don't even know what to download. What I get is a zip file with many files not readable by Microdem or Read_Dem.exe.Does anyone know what data format to download from the S…

  4. Hello, all!I don't want to toot my horn too loud, but I thought I should mention the release of my GMAX Mesh Module for TerraBuilder PRO here, since it is an appropriate forum. It is payware (You'll need TB PRO to process the file) but you can still download the module (comes with the TB PRO Package) and try it out within GMAX, get familiar with the functionality and see if it can be of use to you. This is a free upgrade for registered users of TB PRO. I also have a full tutorial and reference guide on line.Someone mentioned "phantasy mountains" a while ago - this would be a perfect tool for that. I'm using it to create lunar landscape for my upcoming TerraBuilder:Moon ad…

You'll figure out quite quickly that I'm new to all this, but I'm sure someone's seen these problems before. Before looking much at this forum I tried using 3dem to convert Canadian .dem files from Geobase into files for resampling. The files looked good in 3dem, but after resample the elevations were fine in order of magnitude, except they were reversed in latitude (upside down). After checking here I tried Microdem. I get a good map in Microdem, but after I resample the elevation changes are huge -- from 0 at sea level to 10 -12,000 meters. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm not a designer but wish I were ... I've had a very negative experience with mesh terrain and would like to undo the damage. Main problems: crash-to-desktop when near a point on boundary with other mesh terrain; and, a whole chunk of a country flattened to sea level with only the airports, lakes, and rivers at the proper elevation. The various mesh files are by the same designer whom I've contacted with screenshots of the bizarre terrain and the exact coordinates of the flattened sector but have received no response. As for the improperly flattened terrain, after ridding my scenery library and hard drive of the mesh, I tried copying the .bgl files for the area from a…

Hello everyone!..Sometime ago i've tried to create some small meshes from the SRTM data for my own use and followed probably the default way (BlackArt then SRTM-To-BGL). That worked quite good, so now i decided to go a little bit further and create some larger meshes, but encountered some errr... difficulties. The plan was to follow the same procedure as before. Optimize the SRTM Data to get rid of noise and faults in the file using BlackArt, then convert the optimized files into BGLs.Unfortunately, i've not figured the way the Bulk Processing for the BlackArt works, 'cause adding one-by-one file in the Add Files dialog seems to be err... quite time consuming operation. Co…

Hi All, I do hope this is the appropriate forum for my query, I apologise if it is not.Whilst trying to optimize my setup I read somewhere (I think one of the Avsim forums) that I should alter the FS9 Config file to match the various "Mesh" scenery I'm flying over. (I have addon mesh for British Columbia, Washington, Idaho and Alaska etc. ie. Holger Sandmann - and others - freeware from this site)I've now heard that this is not necessary as the program will only load the appropriate settings. I'm afraid I am not too familiar with the intricacies of computer programming - would someone be kind enough to put me right regarding this as I don't want to scramble my Sim by fidd…

Looking for a modeler who would like to join a project in progress with a few other simmers and create some photoreal textures for Hong Kong. It's not a large area we are looking for so probably wouldn't take much time. Also maybe some 38m or 19m mesh to go with it would be nice. If this is your "thing" and want to find out more, go to:www.MileHighProductions.cwhnetworks.com and d/l the video "Project 9 Dragons". It will explain all.thx

Hi All,I'm new to mesh design and would like to know the optimum size of a mesh BGL from a performance stand point. By size I mean number of (1 degree)Lat Long tiles per BGL. I'm using 3arcsec SRTM data for the sub-continent of India. N14 to N16 and E73 to E82 gives me a BGL around 30 megs in size. Is this ok or should I split it down further. Thanks in advance,Keith

Hi, I don't know if this belongs here, but I think it's close enough. I just want to know if anyone can modificate a terrain, specifically, the santo domingo city, in the Dominican Republic. The city area is pretty short, so I want it to expand a little more. If anyone doesn't have time to do that, at least tell me where I can lear to do that myself. Please help, thanx.PS: here are to satellital photos, one of the real santo domingo city, http://www.freewebs.com/einzig05/gian/santo%20domingo2.JPGthe other from Flight Simulator 2002, the one I have. The city limits should be along the red line: http://www.freewebs.com/einzig05/gian/santo%20domingoFS.JPG

Is there a way to tell resampler to create a mesh that will be relative to the default mesh? (as opposed to MSL, where elevation 0 is at sea level) That is, elevation 0 will leave default mesh unchanged, and elevation 100 will be 100 m higher than default... Is that possible? Thanks,Misho

I cannot get any map to display on the NED Seamless USGS site. I went to the old site and was able to get the maps and manipulate them ok. However, the Modify Data does not work nor does downloading in Arc format. Both say that the raster extraction system is down. Is this just my explorer settings (Java stuff) or is it really down?April 27 11:15am Eastern Time USADick Boley @KLBE

  20. Hi, I would like to ask a question. Hope it's OK....;-)I'm flying a lot in Greece. I have the "Hellenic Scenery" with mesh and airports etc from "Hellas Scenery Project (HSP) Group. Do you think I would gain something by getting the"European Enhanced Terrain" from Abacus instead of the mesh contained in the Hellenic Scenery. Up till now, my Gmax modeling skills have be confined to static models - Buildings, fences, runway markers etc. I want to expand these skills to dynamic scenery, so want to start with a windsock.Ive been trawling the net and various forums, but cant seem to find how to get started. I know how to animate an object (make the sock spin on an axis and stand up in the wind), but how do I get it to turn to follow the wind, or stand up when wind is greater than 0 knots)? Is exporting the model any different to a static object?I also watched a brilliant Flash tutorial on aninmating a jetway gate. How would you go about triggering this to move?Jon

Hi Emerson and all you others. After setting up my GTOPO30 tile and everything looks good, I have some other question:1)What do you estimate the rendering time for the entire DEM in LOD7on my rather quick P4 computer? Are we talking two hours or two weeks?Mine has been rendering for quite a while and I'm still only getting sealevel values (of which there are many in the particular DEM).2)Is there a way to repoject the file? I tried simply halving the geographical extents of the file with Globalmapper, then I inserted in FSdem half the number of rows and columns as the original file. (6000/4800 to 3000/2400).FSDem then gives me "wrong size" error.Did I make a mistake when r…
