I'm attempting to override the default terrain/elevation mesh data in FS2002 using a 1:50000 scale DEM data set I obtained for the area around St.John's, Nfld, Canada. I resampled the file which contains 1201x1201 dem points in a 0.25 deg square area (hence should be 0.75 arcsec resolution, which at my latitude is something like 12.5m).When I try to use this in FS2002 (adding a St.John's_DEM scenic area with just the resultant BGL) I do see an immediate impact. However, the default FS2002 terrain, especially the crappy coastline, still seems to be coming through. There's obviously something I'm missing. What is the most CORRECT way to exclude the default secenery elevat…

  2. see athttp://seamless.usgs.gov/SRTM Half Pixel Shift News: Starting February 6, 2007, the SRTM "finished" elevation data no longer contains a half pixel shift. The data has been corrected and verified.good to know this!CheersVlada Stoje

It seems to me that a simple conversion program might exist somewhere that would turn a gray scale image into a format the new FSX resample could use on small repair jobs on commercial terrain meshes. I know that Blackart and grises50 exist, but am not sure they apply any more. I only have limited time to work on mesh and I'm hoping there is a simple utility.

Okay here's the deal...I have some SRTM data I'm wanting to bring in to Photoshop so that I can edit elevations visually, save it back out as a file and then re-import that data into Globalmapper to re-render out a prepared geotiff for running through resample.exe.Now I can get the file into photoshop okay (save as BIL, rename to .raw and open in Photoshop) tweak it in Photoshop and then I save out the file as a RAW file and rename to .bil... Globalmapper is not liking the reworked bil and I'm obviously missing a step somewhere...Now if the process is similar to Geotiff I'm suspecting I'll need to extract header information for the RAW file before use in photoshop and pl…

Hi all, just stumbled across a news release at http://seamless.usgs.gov/announcements.aspThe "cleaned" version of the 1-arcesc (US only) and 3-arcsec SRTM data has been uploaded. Note, however, that "cleaned" does not mean free of voids. Here's the relevant excerpt:"The editing, also referred to as finishing, consisted of delineating and flattening water bodies, better defining coastlines, removing "spikes" and "wells", and filling small voids. This "finished" set is publicly available at two postings: 1 arc-second for the United States and its territories and possessions, and 3 arc-seconds for regions between 60 degrees N and 56 degrees S latitude. The method NGA uses to p…

Hi there, since Sicilia in Italy is a beautyful island, I would like to optimize the mesh and after that give the mesh a more realistic texture (photo realistic if possible). After hours of reading and searching and reading again, I can't realy find a point to start with. A tutorial would be great for getting started and learn stuff by doing.I found elevation tiles here: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/topo/gltiles.htmlCan I use those data? If yes, what do I need to do after downloading them?I heard about the Microsoft Resample program. Can I use the above mentioned data with this program?Any help is very appreciated.Best regardsGerhard, EDDM

I've been using FSDEM with some success to generate mesh scenery files starting with .hgt files downloaded from ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version2/SRTM3. One thing which is mystifying me is how DSDEM "knows" the Lat/Lon coordinates of a given .hgt file. I have looked at the contents of one of these files using a hex editor, and it appears to contain the metre altitudes, one value per two bytes, in a simple grid format. Where is the info about the Lat/Lon coordinates kept? Thanks

I am trying to correct the port area of Castries on St Lucia (TLPC) in FS9. I have successfully reshaped the harbour with Coast_Line_Maker, changed the Landclass with EZ-Landclass and created a new Mesh with FSDEM. It was quite a learning curve but worth the experience. All is well apart from one feature in the mesh. The Vigie peninsula, actually a large hill on the north side of the harbour, is too small in area in the default scenery and I have pushed the correct coastline further out into the sea. This new area has a water mask to the new coastline and a land mask on the other side. The enlarged area shows up fine in 2-D, but the new mesh will only follow the line of t…

This is for all the mesh design community.I'm currently finishing (i.e. closing gaps and correcting blank and missing areas) a mesh terrain for the full mexican territory, I've been very busy with this since I was checking it to be as good as possible, testing it toroughfully to avoid gaps and to provide an good overlapping mesh for the entirety of Mexican Territory.Data to generate this mesh was from INEGI "Mexican Elevations Continuum" consisting of DEM generated from the set of 1:25000 topographical charts for mexican territory sampled to a spacing of 1 arcsecond and presented in IRF92 datum, practically the same as WGS84 and in geographic projection and in BIL format.…

Hi,I have spent some time looking for a BGL file decompiler as I want to extract the terrain mesh from a fs2004 compiled file. It holds 70 m SRTM data mesh. The BGLX180 is not functional and no more supported. Is it maybe easier to get raw SRTM data and compile it, orwhat decompiler do you suggest and what version. It seemsthat there is hard to find a tool that works.../Mikael

Hi, folks!I'm newbie at this forum and haven't enough time yet to go through all threads. I would like therefore, to ask a couple of question re. mesh design. From what I have learned I know that SRTM maybe quite useful for mesh design. I've recently downloaded the whole SRTM (3 arc sec) data for Eurasia from the well-known website and now want to know:1. How precise the mesh will be after compilation to BGL? (30m, 70m, ???)2. Is there any source to get 1 arc sec SRTM data for other continents as well?2. What is the default FS2004 mesh precision? (again in meters ;)>)3. What sort of tools (except SRTM to BGL Compiler) would be useful for a proper mesh design?Regards,Ru…

Hi guys, I sure could use some insight on this issue. Sort of a long way around to ask a question but bear in mind I am a beginner.I have been creating some of my own terrain mesh (as he pats himself on the back), and now I am working on creating some Hi-resolution photoreal terrain mesh. Were talkin' 1.2m/pixel. Yes, I am aware of FS2004 limitations with this stuff but I have had some success. I can create it with good results using a "flatten" poly process but of course we all know the world ain't flat. When I create hi-res photomesh I will get these spikes that shoot way up into the air. I can only assume there is no DEM data at those points causing this anomily? L…
