Hello,I was just wondering that the guys from "FSfreeware" have published some comercial mesh-sceneries based on SRTM data.Is it possible that they have an agreement with NASA or is it the case that the guys of NASA have no problem about that other people are earning money with their data? And what about required licenses for freeware mesh sceneries?Best regardsSasa

Hi all,Happy to part of the comunity. :)I have just made my first Mesh scenery for my area (Svalbard). The mesh is made out from a 1:100 000 topo map, which is is scanned at 150DPI (16.9m pr pixel). Measuered in the MS LOD this would be about 10 or 11, but this would not be totaly true. On the scanned 1:100 000 map there is 50m between each hight line, and after Interpolating it's 0.1m. I know it's wrong to use the LOD10, but I'm not able to figure out the correct LOD. The LOD tables only reffere to LOD values as a result of distance in the xy(Lon/Lat) axis, not the z(elevation). Can sombody tell me exactly what LOD to use?At the moment I have found that LOD8 is best, this…

I'd like to bring this issue up again and perhaps share some personal experience at creating mesh from scratch (that is, building grey level contour maps and converting to DEM!).I'm using a 1m separation in my grey maps - that is, terrain contours are separated by 1m. Tough job (actually a friend of mine is helping out with this!). Then there's the .inf file - the tricky bit. Started off with an LOD of 11 and with TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL set to 19 - mesh is visible. Decent mesh but for 1m contour separation I'd expect much better results.I then tried LOD = 12 (which basically means 9.6m between elevation samples - smashing sample size). With TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL = 19…

I downloaded Justin T's Green MTN mesh and it seems to work very, very well in FS2004, altho the install program only permitted installation to FS2000/FS20002 directly, so I moved the .EXE program into the proper spot in FS9. Definitely helps the terrain even in the Burlington area itself....thanks Justin!Now........The KBTV Burlington VT airport approaches have some very steep gradients which are created by the Winooski river which has cut some deep channels quite close to the airport. We are talking very steep rocky cliffs here. Placing photoreal images down on this mesh however revealed a few anomalies.I wonder if it is possible to place a very high resolution mesh ju…

I have noticed that where there are large lakes, the scenery engine seems to automatically flatten the lake, regardless of what the 3d terrain says should be there. If that is so, could someone use this to flatten photoreal rivers that are affected by rolling hilly terrain?

Thought I would post this here as I thought someone may be able to offer advice.I have found that whenever I fly in FS9 with LAGO's FS2004 Terramesh (UK & Scandinavia) turned on the sim tends to hang after a while flying and I receive a Microsoft fatal error message dialogue. When clicking on 'detail' in the error dialogue it refers to 'Terrain.dll' as where the problem occurred. This dll is not a LAGO file but an MS one, presumably handling the processing of things like mesh files.I do not appear to have received the error when simply using default FS9 mesh, but having purchased these add-ons I am rather disappointed not being able to use them. LAGO have only advised…

Hi there:For anyone familiar with John Childs' excellent DEM website (http://www.terrainmap.com) this isn't exactly news but I haven't found any reference to these free data in this forum and thus wanted to give you a heads-up.ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer, http://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/) is a satellite system collecting multispectral images at up to 15 meter resolution between 82N and 82S latitudes. In contrast to the active sensors of the Shuttle Radar mission, the DEMs are derived from "stereoscopic" images of two passes over a given area. According to the ASTER DEM user info (http://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/products/DEM.PDF) the res…

Hello.I'm a new user of the SRTM 2 BGL terrain mesh program available here at AVSIM and would like to ask a question about the source data format needed to generate a source (.bat) file for the Microsoft Resample BGL compiler program. On the USGS seamless data map/download site, I can download both 30 meter and 90 meter SRTM data sets in four differenet formats: ARC, BIL, GRID, and TIFF. The SRTM 2 BGL documention only references SRTM '.HGT' file extensions as being needed to be placed in the source directory before generating a .bat file for RESAMPLE compiling. I cannot find any files with '.HGT' extensions in any of the USGS SRTM data set formats I mentioned abov…

Maybe I missed something here. I have created mesh for my local airport near pattaya. When I loaded it into fs2002 everything seem ok. But when I try in to FS9 I cannot see any change in my scenery.Do I have to do something "extra" for install mesh into FS9? I use LOD12 for my mesh.

The relative merits of LOD10 vs LOD12 mesh in FS2004, when constructed from 10m source data.(I created a new thread because this topic is of some importance and not really related to the topic where this discussion began.)Link to Justin's comment re LOD]I've done some more testing. (Maybe I need an acronym for that phrase, I use it often enough :)) I compared the default mesh with 10mLOD10 and 10mLOD12 mesh for the same area of the Grand Canyon illustrated in the link in Justin's post. My screenshots can be downloaded at:www.fs-traveler.com/cgi-bin/fs9-gc-lod-test.zipJustin,1) I don't know what version of FS you are using, but my off-the-shelf version of FS9 includes LOD9…

I'm another new mesh developer with a question. Here's the overview:I got some data from the USGS seemless data distribution to cover the Escalante region of Utah. I chose 'BIL' format, which turned out to be exactly the format needed by resample. The data came in two segments. I created '.inf' files (see below) and generated two '.bgl' files. The problem is that each 'bgl' file seems to have a margine around it, a region of 3000 ft or so where no data was created even though there is data in the source file. This left a 1 mile gap between the two regions. I can see this gap in tmfviewer and in FS. I later created a single '.inf' file which generated one '.bgl' fr…

Hi, what I am looking for is any source for Digital elevation Data with a resolution higher than 3 arc/second (100 m) for the north-east region of South america, Country: COLOMBIA, area surrounduing Bogota, the main airport there is SKBO.To give you an estimate of the coordinates I will need at least 2 square tiles of 1 degree being the Northwest corners of the tiles: N3W75 and N3W74.What I have found is STRM data (3 arc second/100m) but the results are not what I expected.I have done a extensive search without success. Thanks

I'm new at trying my hand in terrain mesh, and I've read quite a bit on using DEMs.I use MicroDEM, and several other programs to edit and save DEMs, such as Bryce,Vue d'Esprit and 3DStudio Max. But, try as I might, FS Terrain cannot read my DEM. FS Terrain would also not read my greyscale BMPs.Yet these are read faithfully within MicroDEM.Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?RgdsRick

I've just downloaded some mesh scenery for the Palisades area of NY-NJ and Long Island. But it came without any support or installation instructions. Do I extract it to FS2002/scenery file? Or What? This is my first use of these files, so I'll need step-by-step help, if anyone has the patience to help a newbie. Thanks.

I've been studying Steve Greenwood's thesis on the errors that Microdem has reading NED data from the USGS seamless data site. This post refers to his writings, so I refer you to his website if you're not familiar with these potential errors:http://www.fs-traveler.com/sdds-test.shtmlI started playing around with numbers on a block of NED data I downloaded from the USGS seamless server. The northwestern corner of the data that I requested was 40N 107W. After loading the data into Microdem, I noticed that it was reporting a northwestern corner of 39.99972N and 107.00000W (I got this from the following menu path: Calculate/Map Window Corners). The TFW file reported the …

I've been trying to download NED data from the USGS seamless data distribution site (http://seamless.usgs.gov/), but I have a very low success rate because quite often a download will start and then timeout. Sometimes I'll only get 1% or 2% downloaded, sometimes as much as 92%. But only occasionally will I get a completed download.I have DSL, and when the files are downloading I get an average rate of about 138 kB/s. (That's pretty good; or at least good enough to not induce any timeouts.) Anyway, out of the clear blue, data stops coming in and I have to go back and try the download again -- where the frustration is compounded because the data has to be extracted and …

Hi all this is my first post in this forum....Ok here are the questions, I am a scenery designer, I work mostly using gmax and my only intervention in terrrain elevation modification is doing flattens in Scasm.Last week I started to investigate about mesh design and I came across with a program called FSterrain 2002 by MW graphics (No tutorials, no help), I also made a search on yahoo by the most common term found in the program GTOPO30 and found a website with the Earth divided in "Tiles" I downloaded the one I'm interested in and loaded into the program and changed the "resolution" to 3 Arc Sec and generated the BGL. I found in the scenery a somewhat good improvement …

I'm probably missing something really simple but I'm gooing out of my mind trying to figure this out. All of the mesh I've tried to create either ... 1. Doesn't show up2. Shows up at 12,000 feet looking like a plowed field 3. I finally got it at the right elevation using a BIL file but it still is messed up. I've played with every parameter I can think of and I've read through this almost every thread in this forum I think but I can't figure it out. The best result I've had is with a bil file.....here's the inf file :[source] Type = ElevS16LSB SourceDir = "C:Chautlgbil" SourceFile = "44032734.bil" NullCellValue = -32767 Lat = 42.4737222 Lon = -79.604089 NumOfCellsPerLine…
