I noticed new directory North America on the sites JPL NASA SRTM Public Distribution http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/pub_dist.htmI didn't count or check all the files, but it seems that there are 3arc sec elevation data for whole continent. (Up to the parallel 60 - the limitation of the Endeavour orbits during this famous geographical mission.) Such detailed elevation data are here for free first time for countries outside USA. I was curious and watched one tile N19W099 with the Popocatepetl (5400 m in the SRTM file) in the program Surfer 8 (blue color = missing data). Just beautiful, isn't it? We can look forward for the directories with other continents perhaps in the near…

I'm trying to create my first terrain mesh and am having some success (its not placed in the right place but I'm working on the lat/lon problem separately). My question is... is there a way to get better than the 4.75m resolution or are we stuck with it? I have some 2m terrain color satellite photos but I can't really use them because of that limit.http://www.kcsportscalendar.net/sig.jpg

Feel like I'm posting to the "Professor's Lounge", and I'm still a junior level undergraduate........ !!Just about to take delivery of a new system finally capable of handling a full compliment of Mesh elevation data. I'm not a tweaker, so, I'd like to acquire a full package of "good" - to "better than good" Mesh to add to FS. I've considered the FS Genesis bundle, w/ Alaska, but after reading mauy posts in here, last few weeks, not sure what the consensus is for us "plug & play" simmers - who do not intend to patch voids in data, or revise to sub-30, or sub-15 mesh standards. I "Like" terrain features - especially mt. peaks & good terrain definition. But I trully…

    I have d/l 10m dems for Tinian and Saipan Islands. I extracted them and they display fine on "Global Mapper". I then converted them to what I call "dat" files using "read_dem". Finally, I converted them to a bgl using "resample". I am using the following inf file:[Destination] LOD = Auto DestDir = "." DestBaseFileName = "tinian" BuildSeasons = 0 UseSourceDimensions = 1[source] Type = ElevS16LSB SourceDir = "." SourceFile = "tinian.dat" Lat = 15.125 Lon = 145.625 NumOfCellsPerLine = 1352 NumOfLines = 1391; 7.5 minutes is 12.5 percent of 1 degree, so using .125 CellXdimensionDeg = 9.2524056254626203E-005 ;.125/(1352-1) CellYdimensionDeg = 8.992805755…

I have mesh-, landclass- and airport-sceneries. In which order do I have to put them in my FS2K2 scenery library to work well?. In other words which scenery must have the highest priority and so on.

I'm using 1.2, and I can get a texture on my object, however, if I try to UVW unwrap, I cannot manipulate the texture- I cannot rotate it, select the plane that I wish to manipulate or anything!Ideally to me, I'd be able to appy a texture to each plane individually as typically they are each a different texture. Right now I'm playing with a dummy box that means nothing so I have 5 sides to map to. I want to apply this to my PVD scenery, but I need to crawl first. :)I just tried to manipluate my texture and in the Edit UVW's screen, it shows unaltered excpet for my selection to map to the object (at least I can do that!) However the slection appears to be a mitrror image o…

Howdy:Well, I couldn't resist and started playing around with the new 3-arcsec Shuttle Radar SRMT data, released for the entire North American continent and available at ftp://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/N...America/3arcsec. :-)Below is a series of screen shot comparisons for areas near my home town, in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley.I used four 1-by-1-degree SRMT tiles, merged into one tile, filled some data holes by merging with my 250-m (LOD7) data, resampled as DTED at 3-arcsec resoultion in MicroDEM (probably an unnecessary step), transformed to .bsq format with John Childs' utility (BTW, he's got a new version that can handle files bigger than 9MB, called …

Sorry to post here fellow FS2002 users, but I have a question regarding my scenery I am developing for the UK for X-Plane. The reason I ask here is that there is a fountain of knowledge and also that I have used the same data sources as those used in FS2002 scenery :-I have now got my software to create X-Plane scenery from the Global Land Characterization data and GTOPO30 DEMs. All is well except that some (most?) airports in X-Plane now appear to be slightly raised on small hills above the surrounding terrain. I suppose I could adjust the airfield altitudes but I would like to know why the discrepancy in the airfield data and the terrain data. As I have said, the elevat…

I have just loaded an excellent piece of terrain mesh for Cairns in North Queensland Australia, which also covers my home airport of Mareeba (about 60kms NW of Cairns). The terrain mesh has made Cairns look so realistic (it is now surrounded by mountains not ant hills). My problem is that the Mareeba airport is sunk about 900 feet down (presumably where its default elevation was set by FS2002).Is there any way I can remedy this? ThanksChris

  18. Hi everybody,I have been searching for some good elevation scenery for South America, specifically for Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, but cannot find any. I am thinking about jumping into the terrabuilder stuff to try and create it using Gtopo 30 data. In your experience, is this a bad idea or a good idea. I wanted to get your opinion before I invest alot of time. Thanks for your input,Shane Lewis

Hi everyone,I'm new at scenery design, but I have successfully converted some 10m DEM files for a small Pacific Island (Yap)into a .bgl for fs2002.My terrain looks great, but the coastline is still the low resolution version from MS. How do I go about using the coastline that is defined in my DEM? (i.e., defined by the boundary of 0.0m elevation and non zero elevations) Is there an easy way to do this?If not, I just need some direction in how to get started with defining the coastline. The fs2002 sdk has great docs for importing DEM data, but the vector data doc is not as easy to follow. I have been involved in real world mapping of various features on this island, and…

I am new to creating Mesh fror FS2002. I have read quite widely on the subject, starting with the Microsoft SDK, but much is still unclear to me.What I really need to get hold of is a tutorial which sets out the steps in order, from beginning to end in simple language.I have gained a reasonable idea of what is involved, so I set about acquiring DEM data from official sources. What I got for my area of interest was two sets of DEM data, one for 200m resolution and one for 50m. The area I wish to cover is not very large, so to use the higher resolution might not impact on frame rates once compiled and installed in FS2002 (or will it? or does it make a difference?)Well, to…

Thanks in advance for anyone who replies with a hint :)New to mesh, but not to scenery design... i d/l the sdk for mesh and mesh texturing, but when i do the simple example, i can get it to go with the resample.exe, and also have tried a suggestion someone made about using the old resample exe file. anyways, there are many seasonal fles and a watermask, but nothing i do seems to call the seasons and watermask. i can get it to process the one file called in 'sourcefile' call but when flagging the buildseasons to 1, it wont work unless i call the *_su.bmp file (or 1 filename/respective filename, so that works, but only on the 1 file named), but them makes a set of seasons s…

I am a newbie at creating mesh. Normally I am myself pretty good at figuring stuff out on my own, but in this case it seems like following the directions has only led to frustration.I am trying to create my first mesh terrain. I have looked at tutorials, downloaded tools, and so far my results have been nothing useful. Here is what I've done so far.I have downloaded 7.5-minute swatchs of 10m data from the MapMart.com, and they are in SDTS format (free of charge). My next step as I understand it, is to convert the data to a format that the FS2002 SDK resample tool can understand... binary 16-bit integer data. In order to do this, I downloaded the read_dem.exe program as…

I'm trying to use the Terrain SDK and some GTOPO30 data to improve the mesh scenery around where I live, which is in Chilliwack, BC, Canada, which is very near the US border. In fact, the LOD7 quadrant that encompasses where I live also extends about 20 or 30 miles south of the border, and covers Mt Baker, WA.When I compile the scenery and load it into MSFS, only half of it displays, the rest is default scenery. The part that doesn't display is in the area of Mt Baker. I'm wondering if there is some specialized scenery around MT Baker which has a higher priority than mine. I tried disabling "Northwest USA" Scenery in MSFS, but that didn't help. If I move my data nort…
