What's up with SRTM data downloads via FTP? I can't get any data unless I go via the Seamless data distibution system which is cumbersome. I used to go in via FTP at:http://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/N...arcsec/3arcsec/What's up with that? Anybody know?-- Outer Marker

Hi all,I'm trying to re-mesh an area which includes the local airport. It appears that the airport boundary spans a greater area than the airport actually covers in that when I apply mesh to the area, everywhere is changed except the total area covered by the airport, which I repeat is far greater than the airport boundary is. This area is kept at the particular height (300 ft) and hence I can high gradient inclinations between the airport boundary and other areas which have been re-meshed.When I open the relevant hypxxxxx.bgl file to find the LOD13 areas which cover the total airport boundary, my search is futile!I have concluded that probably the terrain info is contain…

Iam really new to creating mesh. I just wanted to make some simple SRTM mesh for the phoenix area. I have used srtm to bgl in the past and never had any problems. I have tried several times to get the new mesh I made for phoenix to show but it does not work . I only downloaded 33N111W 33N11W for a starting point. the mesh does build and shows up in tmfviewer but not in the sim. I have tried some other areas to with only the same results. I have downloaded mesh for the phoenix area and it did work so I know it's not a problem with the sim. It's something Iam doing but I don't know what it could be unless srtm to bgl has problems with FS2k4Thanks for the help Richard_dillon

Hi all:hope you had a good start into the New Year!Just completed a round of visits to my favorite GIS websites, so here's a list of recent updates:1. Microdem has yet another build (14.60.19, Dec.19), though the help file doesn't state what the latest changes were. Find it at http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdem.htm2. 3DEM has a new version (18.0), which now allows for filling in void areas in SRTM data and a few other additions. (I use 3DEM's shaded top-down view for creating bitmaps of SRTM or CDED DEM tiles; I then merge these tiles and import them as background images in Ground2K4 for delineating shorelines.) http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/3d…

Newbie fascinated by high-resolution topography & GIS, but totally ignorant. Terms like "SRTM data", "SRTM 3 arc.sec", "LOD9" mystify. Haven't a clue where you get the data or the programs to use. Clueless about how MS FS2004 handles terrain & scenery. Is there a textbook or manual or good overview magazine article to explain this stuff? I'm willing to do my homework, but I would sure like some recommendations, both for introductory or overview material, and for thorough, comprehensive manuals or monographs on the subject. I have engineering background and can handle technical stuff, but also wouldn't mind "For Dummies" version to start with.Sorry to bother …

Howdy,:)I'm trying to locate some good data to be used in creating a 30 meter mesh of New Jersey. The data I've located at http://seamless.usgs.gov/start.htm , seems to be corrupted. I've tried several times to download, but was met with un-usable dems. Unable to view or edit in "Microdem". The srtm files are loaded with lots of holes to be edited as are the hgt files. Northern NJ seems to be ok, but from middle to southern the data goes awry. Ant help in locating some decent data would be appreciated.ThanksPhil C.

Is there any way to remove the excess noise from the SRTM data files? I am trying to do up the Island of Guam, but the 1x1 arcsec data has so much noise data that there are 11 meter elevations that are in the ocean. The 1x1 data does a great job on the Island, but when I tried to eliminate the 11M data the nice coastline went away also.Someone please tell me how to solve my dilema!

For FS2002, Steve Greenwood published a list of the various resolutions of mesh for differen tareas of the world.Does anybody know of a similar list for Fs2004 -- I do believe that the mesh resolutions for FS2004 are different to that of FS2002.Thanks Barry

  10. I am interested in editing some of the scenery in fs2004 espescially areas like Western Texas and Garden City Kansas parts of New Mexico. I have flown over these areas in real life and there is a bunch of crop circles or irrigation fields in Garden City Kansas and Western Texas, perhaps Oklahoma, and parts of New Mexico. Now fs2004 looks so plain like a green brown ground in that area. It also has a modeled green farm land in Garden City Kansas that looks nothing like it should look like. To check these places out, I have also used www.mapquest.com and entered a city changed it to ariel view to get satalite imagery. I would like to add some realistic ground textures.…

I understand that MicroDem is the only ("best"?) freeware package to edit terrain points. I tried to do so, but am baffled (again!). I am using Microdem 7.01 alpha.1. I went to In/Out.2. On the "Data Manipulation" Screen, I went to "Edit Dem".3. This loaded my file and an empty table.4. I outlined the area of interest, which populated the table.5. I edited values in the table.6. However, when I saved the data, it did not save my file, as edited. It saved a small file. This small file is not recognized as a dem by other programs. How do I save my whole dem file as edited? Is there a good online tutorial on using MicroDem with FS2xxx?Thanks,Phil

I'm trying to create scenery using the GTOPO30 DEM's. I am using ASD 2.1 scenery designer with MSFS 98. I am using the DEM that conains the WEST INDIES area. The problem is all of my terrain tiles over Antigua are only showing a max. elevation of 1 meter and I know this is a mountainous Island in some areas. I have never run into this problem when using USGS DEM's for the USA.Any suggestions?

After about 2 months of trying to figure out how to create mesh from the CDED1(1:50,000)files, I finally got it, and the results are outstanding. Before I post them to the file library, I would like to be able to determine the LOD of the files. In my .inf file I am using LOD = Auto, so I can't or don't know how determine it. The CDED1 files are anywhere from .75 arcseconds to 3 arcseconds. I am using Erdas Imagine 8.6 to import and merge them into a geotiff, Microdem 7. something to convert them into a .bsq file and then "resample.exe" to convert to a .bgl file. I am subsetting and naming the files based on the NTS (National Topographic System)1:250,000 scheme, so fo…

I have been making a detailed mesh for a friend of mine. The mesh is for an island in a lake. I have the island mesh in LOD 11, 12 and 13. My problem now is to get this shown in FS2004. Almost everything is put together and the island shows up on the lake perfectly, but with no eleveation (ie. the mesh doesn't show up). The mesh is verified correct by tmfviewer and by placing the island mesh on the mainland.I have seen in other posts about the flatten problem for airports and others, and wonder if this is the same.If I have understood this correctly this happens because of a flatten area in 2004 that we are not able to exclude (yet). Correct? And that the only way so far …

Hi guys,I created a LOD12 mesh scenery for a small island (digitized a map, created a grays-layered bmp image, converted to DEM etc) and I'm quite satisfied with the results. I'm using LOD12 (against LOD10) because terrain is almost plane except for some very small "canyons" which look bad under LOD10.Unofortunately, coasts do not show up properly, they're too "steepy", though even when viewing the bgl file in TMFViewer, they look correctly shaped - that is, they dive in water more gradually.I would like you to take a look at some sample pictures:http://simflying.de-zordo.it/prodotti/licd/screens.htmlToday, being wondering about the way to make the water look light blue n…

I've been trying to learn how to create mesh using the new Canadian .75 arc-second data. What I'm trying to do first (just to get the hang of this stuff) is to create a mesh bgl from a single DEM file from the GeoBase.ca site.I opened the DEM in MircoDem and saved it as a 16 bit BSQ file. I then ran it through resample etc to get a bgl file. So far so good. The results aren't so good though. I get this:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/50188.jpgPart of the mesh is very good, lots of detail, but there's that huge annomaly. I get similar effects with other CDED dems I've tried. This is the inf file I used, based on the sample that Holger posted for me:[Destination]; L…

Hi all,i'm a beginner in Mesh. I'm creating scnenry objects with Gmax in the past, and in the future i want to create a new Mesh Scenery Area of Salzburg (Austria). For this, i'm looking for a very high resolution DEM data. But nothing to find.Is there anyone who knows a downloadable Adress where i can get the data? I want to create a minimum of 50m Mesh Scenery, only for Salzburg area. So, i'm very lucky, if there is anyone to help me, find the data. Thanks in front, and i'm very sorry about my bad english :-)Olli

Hi all:just received news about a new Canadian government site that contains, among other things, previously unavailable elevation data, at two resolutions: 1:250,000 (3 arcsec) and 1:50,000 (0.75 arcsec). The lower-resolution data covers all of Canada and the higher resolution is currently available for selected areas of most provinces and all of B.C. (the latter is hard to believe as our provincial government charges several hundred dollars per 1:50,000 digital mapsheet!).This is the website address: http://www.geobase.caHere's the current coverage of the two resolutions (top 3 arcsec, bottom 0.75 arcsec):http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/49234.jpghttp://forums.avsim.n…

Hi all:just a few comparison shots of the first uploaded SRTM-based mesh of Europe (Sicili, Italy), by Giovanni Miduri, versus the DTED1-based mesh uploaded earlier this year by Nanucq Faitman. To be honest, I would have thought that the DTED1-based mesh would show more detail, as those source data are derived from standard geodetic procedures (photogrammetric mapping). However, it appears that the SRTM mesh with the same 3-arcsec source resolution provides slightly higher definition of detail. Whether that's due to higher accuracy or less accuracy (e.g., more noise) I can't tell, because I'm not familiar with this particular area. I'll have another look at some German sit…

Hey all!I am new to mesh, and I THINK I have everything I need to get started, a folder full of various programs, and a site with HGT data files. With that said, I am not sure how to get the program to execute the data processing.I have the *.hgt file in the same folder with the SRTM_3ARCSEC_TO_BGL file. I have tried just double clicking it, and running it from the command line within Win XP, all with no new files beind processed. So, what am I missing? Any help would be great. Thank you!

Now that I have learned to use coastline maker and have moved the shoreline and roads to exactly the right locations, I find that the underlying grid that I created is not in the right location. I now have a few roads that plunge off the end of the island. So it appears that I need to move the grid a wee bit west.I have tried to do so by inserting different values in the destination section of my inf file. But, so far, the island is refusing to budge. Any ideas? Also, I recall reading about a process for converting from USGS dems to dems that are more appropriate for MSFS. For example, the USGS dem appears to generate a map that is slightly tilted. Perhaps this would…
