Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. If you’re looking for interaction with real world traffic I recommend PSXT For many many years I’ve been using it with LAAP (live ATC tunable inside the sim aircraft) the accuracy of the flight representation in the SIM is very good and routinely I’m able to hold close formation with aircraft I am following. My technique is to set up favorite aircraft on FlightAware and setting up alert I’m able to anticipate the departure if they are filing a flight plan or join them shortly after takeoff if they are VFR. If there is a live ATC in the area I can prepare frequencies and follow communication real time, it is quite an immersive experie…

My new computer arrived today. When I sold my house and moved into a retirement community I bought a new Alienware Computer for flight simming. 1350 watt liquid cooled power supply. 13th gen Intel Corel i9 13900KF (24-core,68MB Total Cache. 3.0 to 5.8GHz P-Core) 64GB, 2x32GB, DDR5, 4800MHz 4TB M.2 PCle NVMe Solid State Drive NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6X Intel Killer Wi-Fi 6E AX1675, 2x2, 802.11ax, MUMIMO Bluetooth wireless card. Don't ask me what all that means. I have my guru coming over on Monday to set it all up for me. The retirement home I'm in has limited WiFi so I have a remote hotspot from my phone service - T-Mobi…

Since the F16 pilot in one of the chase planes reported that the pilot was slumped over and apparently unconscious, the hypothesis is that they suffered from hypoxia, similar the Lear Jet crash of the championship golfer back in 1999. Well, if there's any sort of "bright spot" in this tragedy, it is that they were presumably all unconscious and didn't have to endure the monstrous impact of the crash... My sincere condolences to the entire family and the pilot.

It has been a while since I last used my flightim and visited this forum. So, hello everyone, Im back! Good to see there are still quite a few names and avatars I remember. 😊 I havent had time to sim the past years, but lately I managed to free up some time and I was curious about FS2020, so I thought what the heck, its not a sin to make some time for myself, to do what I like! 😜 I notice that I have to freshen up my knowladge and skills 'a little' (I didnt have a clue what to do in the Skymaster, my vavorite aircraft! I dont even want to think of what's going to happen if I start up a PMDG or the Dash again 🤣), after such a long time and I remembered that when…

The thread about the business jet crash in Virginia and what might have happened to the pilot and not enough remains to determine what might have caused him to be slumped over the controls prompts me to write this. My son Eric had been missing for about three years. He lived in Flagstaff Arizona and was an avid wilderness camper. He liked to go off to remote areas and camp alone away from people. We had contacted the Flagstaff police department and reported him as a missing person. They had no knowledge of what might have happened to him. Last summer a hunter spotted a Jeep almost hidden by vegetation about 50 yards off the road in a remote camp site. …

Just returned from a trip to Disney recently, and of all the things I did there, the one that keeps returning to me is my encounter with the ride named Mission: Space. It's my own fault! Lulled by years of typically tame, cutesy Disney rides, it never occurred to me for a second that this thing could seriously be dangerous. I (literally) ignored the numerous warning signs, ignored the ominous barf bags, Ignored the claustrophobia-inducing tiny enclosure, and thought of the whole thing as a personal challenge. Before I even got on, the ride was trying to scare me, but its Disney, right? How bad could it possibly be? 🤠 Oh boy..... Have any of you fearless fel…

I found an article at the Royal Aeronautical Society: Highlights from the RAeS Future Combat Air & Space Capabilities Summit . There was an interesting section about a simulation experiment using AI enhanced drones to target surface to air missile (SAM) sites: Could an AI-enabled UCAV turn on its creators to accomplish its mission? (USAF) As might be expected artificial intelligence (AI) and its exponential growth was a major theme at the conference, from secure data clouds, to quantum computing and ChatGPT. However, perhaps one of the most fascinating presentations came from Col Tucker ‘Cinco’ Hamilton, the Chief of AI Test and Operations, USAF, who provid…

  19. This is the view from the only flying Lancaster in Britain. It’s shot from the bomb aimer’s position right at the front of the aircraft below the cockpit. Now instead of a lovely view of rural England imagine how it must have felt during the famous Dambuster’s raid in 1943 when it had to fly at night at just 60 feet above the dam’s reservoir and being shot at. Most of the crew were under 30.
