Hi all,I supervise a pre de-icing crew for an airline at Toronto's Pearson Int'l airport. Pre de-icing basically involves the removal of snow from the wings and tail surfaces (an in the case of Tri engined jets, the upper fuse as well) of the aircraft using compressed air. This results in a substantial savings to the company as it then requires less glycol to de ice, and then anti ice the aircraft before departure. For the curious, a heavily contaminated 747 can cost upwards of $100,000 to de ice and anti ice.Anyways, part of my job requires that I complete a report on the condition of the airplane, decide if it needs pre de-icing and present it to the Captain for a signa…

Hey guys, got a question to propose to you all. The way we have been training and executing LNAV/VNAV approaches such as RNAV(GPS), VOR overlays and NDB overlays, is the use of VNAV as well as use of GPS/FMS LNAV. The concern is lately and with the addition of WAAS coming online quickly is that we are going to start to see lower and lower GPS approach minimums. Already there are some that are going to minimums of 300agl and 3/4 or even 1/2 miles in some instances at places like KMEM and KDEN. It is proposed and some are even in Beta testing that approach mins of those of a CAT 1 ILS. The operational experience of both airlines and corporate operators with GPS has bee…

Is it just me or is there a problem cropping up with the AVSIM site? Seems to be doing wacky things and slowing way, way down most of the day.http://www3.telus.net/midget_ice/Radar_small.gifThis ain't no game kid!http://www3.telus.net/midget_ice/Radar_small.gifhttp://www3.telus.net/midget_ice/dansig.jpg

Some time ago there was a link floating around of a recording where a Cessna was trying to fly to an airport and ended up overflying it, doing random circles above it, and finally landing on the wrong runway. The entire time the controller was having to get other aircraft out of the area because the Cessna pilot was so out of control. The link included the recording and a map of the planes ground track.Does anyone remember this and know where that site is?_____________________________Jeff S. just purchased flight 1 new meridian and i allways like to fly my a/c in fs as close to a role as real world pilots do. I was wondering what would be a realistic roll for the meridian?im guessing one could use it for personal/business charter flights? ( i guess just about any a/c could be used for this)i dont see this as a cargo plane - am i correct about this?what other uses ? other than just a personal transportthanksciao!Brian S

8 months ago my father passed away. Since then, I have been helping my mother go through his estate. We've been steadily plugging away at this task, but had not got around yet to looking completely through his vast library of 8mm cine films that he shot between 1959 and 1982.My mother rang me this morning with some amazing news. I have two very strong aviation memories from my earlier years. The first was in 1976, when as a 10 year old I attended an airshow at Schofields, based at the western outskirts of Sydney, Australia. I distinctly remember seeing quite a few warbirds at that show, and for the first time in my life. The sight and sound of a P51-D at full throttle per…

Hi All,I have a rather sticky networking problem. In the photo below, you can see the layout of my current home network. There are two key components. The first is a flight sim system composed of three computers that communicate via WidevieW using the IPX protocol (required by WidevieW). Thee second is a stand alone computer that serves as an FSHost server for Bush Net 2, but also doubles as my wifes computer. All four computers (which btw run Windows XP) have two network cards; one bound to IPX for WidevieW, the other bound to TCP/IP for general file sharing and internet access. What you will notice is that the flight sim system and the FSHost have different IP addresses…

Our premier issue, Vol 1 No. 1, issued in March of 1997, contained the following editorial. Thought folks would be interested in seeing this bit of AVSIM history:----------------------------------------------------------------------The Customer's Voice It is a funny thing about being heard by manufacturers. When does a customer's voice get heard? Let us count the ways (in ascending importance): When there is enough negative user feedback via their support system? When the negative feedback starts to accumulate like a Michigan snow in the REC.AVIATION.SIMULATION newsgroup? (do they even read REC.AV.SIM???) When users, through whatever medium available, start to compare the…

More and more detail on the wing damage. Thrusters firing more and more to keep attitude. Wing coming apart it seems. Took minutesBrave men and women fly the Shuttle. 14 have been lost in all these years. Amazing when you think about it. I say, do not diminish their bravery by grounding the Shuttle indefinitely! This was an accident, pure and simple. Foam probably did it, but accident nonetheless.Did we ground Airplanes indefinitely after 9/11? How many died on that day?God bless Human spirit and Bravery!http://www.msnbc.com/news/867336.asp?0cv=CB10bt

EDIT: Michael, we appreciate the sharing of the experience, but as your first post on AVSIM, you violated a few of our rules... :)Images too large.Too many images in a single post..And, posted in the wrong forum (please post images in the screenshot forum)...Please read the rules in the screen shot forum, and you will see what our rules are.---------------------------I am no stranger to the Flight Simulation Community. I been around in avsim for now over two years. I just recently got out from behind the desktop and started my Real World Flight Training These shots were taken on Febuary 4th 2003 at 11:15AM to 12:30PM EST. Spending yesterday following the Columbia tragedy there was a significant point (among others) brought up at the NASA briefing:They don't do spacewalks to inspect the entire ship before coming back to Earth. They also don't have the capability to do any repairs. Spacewalks are limited to the cargo bay area unless the boom is along, and then the astronauts still don't venture to the underside of the shuttle.I'm only a desktop pilot. My complete preflghts are few and far between. Who among you real pilots would fly a plane even a thousand miles and then not perform a complete visual check of the exterior before returning those thousand miles?Sixteen days of flight, AND …

If any of you like it, 7 final has been released and is very good, it has a lot of problems cleared up, a password manager added, and it can view the M$ homepage properly. The post form for AVSIM is still a little off center, but that's just a small bother.www.opera.com

Press today is reporting that NASA is saying that the dislodged "foam" (which is actually rock like in hardness) probably didn't cause enough damage to the wing to cause the accident. I am curious--how can they say that so soon? The shuttle was reported as moving about 1900 mph at the time the foam was seen coming off the tank. The foam would have quickly accelerated and hit the wing at a very high speed. Imagine someone throwing a two pound rock at a vehicle going 60 miles an hour, let alone 1900 mph....Isn't it better that NASA keep mum on the subject? Or are they trying to shift focus away from a cause which many have warned about for years?Even if the foam strike…

AllI need some help. And before anyone says contact Sierra, I already have. Ten emails in the last two weeks (one a day) with no results. The problem is...that I think they are troubleshooting the wrong problem. They keep focusing on hardware. Here's the story. I have a stand-alone computer that my son uses for homework and gaming. It's not on the internet and has no external connections (modem, cable, telephone, etc), no peripherals except for MS Sidewinder. No virus protection running. It's completely stand-alone. It's a Gateway PIII 1000 with 512 MB RAM, GEForce2 and SB Audigy-Gamer. He (my son) was having a significant problem with lockups and freezes. Seeing…

My Own research of course. Follow Closely now. I am 100% Serious, and I am not trolling, so please don't flame me, as I believe I am on to something here.***********************************ET = External TankLWT = Light Weight TankSLWT - Super Light Weight Tank***********************************I was involved in a thread on flightsim here:http://www.flightsimnetwork.com/dcforum/DCForumID2/4703.htmlIn that Thread, I screwed up and called the ET (External Tank) An External Tank Booster. I was promptly corrected and I fixed it.Anyway, that led to further speculation on my part regarding the ET, which is Manufactured by Michoud, a Lockheed Martin Company.http://www.lockheedm…
