Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

(Please excuse my placing this message here, but I don't know where else to put it, as there doesn't seem to be an obvious AVSIM Forum for it. Feel free to move it to a more appropriate location if there is one.)Quietly, and with almost no publicity, the ProjectAI website was attacked by a hacker some time ago. Fortunately, it didn't cause much damage, and the most obvious symptom was the loss of its home page, although I understand that the library hasn't been updated recently.Today, the website is unavailable, and you get a message saying that it is being updated. My experience over many years is that ProjectAI is a very useful complementary site for AVSIM, as I think it…

Odd that I've never come across this before...I tried to post a link to a pic at airliners.net, and AVSIM forum system told me that links to that site are not permitted. Curious as to why.

  5. There has been a lot of discussion about piracy over the past days, which got me thinking about what I'm about to tell you.Who here has a payware addon not being used? I know I do, several even. Some addons I wouldn't mind donating, others I would like to sell for a fair price. Now, in other fields it's quite common for there to be a secondhand market, but not so much in the software industry or addon business. Add to that the fact that addon prices rarely seem to drop from their original starting price. And maybe you've got an unhealthy situation? What if we were to come with a license transfer system of some sort? Would that perhaps deter some people from piracy? As well…

I don't know what's going on in the other piracy-related threads. True to my word I haven't been reading them. But I have been thinking about everything that's been said previously, recently here and further in the past in so many different threads and on so many different sites.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxMy solution to the piracy problem is along the lines that N400QW indicates that some people are considering. It's very simple -- tonight I feel that I'm not going to release AirBoss at all. No product, no piracy, no support headaches. What could be simpler? What will I do instead? Well, for one thing I'll continue to work on AirBoss because I wrote it mainly for my own pur…

As I indicated in a post a couple of weeks ago, the controllers at JFK Tower usually have senses of humor. Well, what I heard just now floored me ...A controller just sent best wishes to a pair of newlyweds who are on an outbound flight, apparently friends of his. He did this in the course of issuing the takeoff clearance. He had to spell the last name of the couple phonetically for the flight crew, who had earlier asked twice that it be repeated in the clear. The whole exchange took about a minute, during which time the aircraft continued to hold at the end of the runway. It wasn't exactly humorous but it certainly got my attention.I've heard this controller many t…

The recent posts on piracy have had some interesting moments, but they've had a tendency to turn into shouting/pouting matches. What do you say we devote a thread to brainstorming specific ideas for combating piracy? Here's a chance to share your ideas, no matter how off-the-wall they may seem at first blush. Even if something comes to mind that's silly or goofy, it might be worthwhile sharing it, just to get everyone's wheels turning. To make it easy for the next poster, I'll start off with my idea, which I'm sure is quite lame and very easy to top.Extensive production notes/developer notes for add-on titlesPart of the reason piracy is so rampant is that people can't see w…

There are many embarrassing mistakes to make when flying that can take a pilot back to the days when a landing in Flight Sim involved slamming the aircraft into the ground nose-wheel first.I consider myself to be a decently skilled pilot in Flight Sim, I know my way around the cockpit and can fly properly, undergoing the proper procedures, etc, but I have my days sometimes. With me, these usually occur when I invite a friend over to my house to show off some Flight Sim stuff. It's always at the worst moments. For example, I was showing someone how I knew the PMDG 737 'inside out', when I was making an approach and forgot to turn auto-throttle off, wondering why I couldn't…

The press is saying nothing about this, but the 787 is flying. I have seen the plane airborne 4 times now, most always in the very late afternoon, flying on low power and climbing very shallow or on approach for landing at KPAE. The plane is in patchwork white and zinc chromate (for a composite plane, ZC seems strange...), has the sawtooth aft cowling edge and shallow winglets. It's definitely the 787. I'll try to get pics up ASAP.

Hi, I have been watching some FSX movies that people have posted, and I notice that people seem to apply Reverse thrust the exact moment when the main landing gears touch down. Is that the correct proceedure? Im sure that some airlines differ, but I would think that a pilot would wait until the nose gear is down before applying.Just wondering about that, and what you (as an airline pilot) would have to say about this subject.Thank you,Rich

  20. The Cessna was at or very close to ceiling altitude (12,000') with a summer density (13,000') in mountainous terrain. The pilot waited for close rising terrain in front and on both sides before trying to bank a U-turn to head back the way he came. He banked in excess of 45 degrees. This resulted in eventually stalling and impacting the trees and ground completely inverted, killing both himself and a passenger. The plane wasn't found for three years. For the purpose of collecting info for the forest service, he had mounted a VHS recorder in the cockpit, thus capturing his final moments and mistake(s) prior to the crash. The tape was allowed by the family to be used f…

Hi,Can't help but wonder whether Microsoft is about to shoot itself in the foot yet again:http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2350740,00.aspI, for one, see no pressing need to change to Windows 7 in the foreseeable future. XP Home (32 bit) works just fine.I am guessing there will be many like me who are unlikely to be tempted unless Microsoft are prepared to rethink their policy on this one.Who needs the hassle? Very few, I'll wager, when the effort involved to move a highly complex and customized stable XP based installation to Windows 7 is just too much effort. I say wake up Microsoft and get your market research teams to earn their keep. Things are not the same as the…

Instead of putting a final end to further development of Flight Simulator, I just wonder why Microsoft didn't offer to license their code to a reputable developer. What good or value is all the code just sitting there locked up collecting dust somewhere? In doing so MS could have continued to make money, a developer could have made a few bucks, we could have gotten a few fixes or an updated and improved product. All the framework was there. I guess it's more complicated than that ... :(
