Hi all, I'm going away for a week at the end of February and could really do with some interesting aviation related books to read whilst I'm gone. I'm pretty open to any suggestions. I've enjoyed reading several books regarding the 747 and airline pilots discussing their day-to-day jobs, I've also read Michael O'Leary's incredibly rise to power in Ryanair. Are there any that I should check out? I'm not really after manuals or anything, but more factual books, etc. Thanks for your help!

If you view the system statistics (http://forum.avsim.net/stats/) you will see that we have over 2.2 million posts that are active in the database. Those date back to 2006, when we brought this version of forum software online. Although our systems are fast and powerful, that many messages do put a load on the system, especially when users do searches. Two comets to look forward to this year. 1. Comet Pan-starrs will pass by Earth in early March. If we're lucky on March 12th and 13th the comet may be visible with the naked eye. To keep this aviation related, my wife snapped this shot of me in my Cessna. 2. Comet ISON (discovered on September 21th, 2012) which will pass Earth on December 26th, 2013 (at distance of 39.6 million miles) and could shine as bright as the full moon during the day. It should start to become visible to the naked eye by late October or early November. This one should be good. Anyone remember Comet Hale Bopp back in 1997? RJ

Seems the X10 is sold out everywhere. After watching a few videos, I'm impressed, the BB Hud and Peek feature are very smart. More work I can see and do with less phone tapping the better. I think they are back in the game. I'm more excited about the Q10 QWERTY version myself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bVfAp2osY7k

Response from Chris Hadfield in orbit to William Shatner's Question "Are you tweeting from space?" Chris Hadfield: "Yes, Standard Orbit, Captain. And we're detecting signs of life on the surface." This has been great interaction between these two:

The following was sourced from AVwebFlash 1 hour ago: Quote "easyJet To Run Dry For Efficiency Over the next 12 months, UK carrier easyJet plans to find out if they can improve the efficiency of their operations by removing moisture weight from their aircraft, the airline announced Wednesday. The carrier's yearlong test involves installation of 66-pound "Zonal Dryer" systems in four Airbus A320 aircraft. It is hoped that the system, provided by CTT Systems of Sweden, will remove up to 550 pounds of moisture per flight from the jets. The carrier says the weight is equivalent to removing 12 bags from the cargo hold and that could save nearly 10 million pounds of fu…

So have you ever wondered how our universe started? Scientists call it the Big Bang which describes the early development of the Universe. According to the Big Bang model, about 13.8 billion years ago the Universe expanded from a single point of extremely dense matter, and it continues to expand today. I still have a hard time understanding how all the billions of gallaxies started from a single point, but the Big Bang is a widely accepted theory. About 1% of the snow that you see on a old analog TV screen is made up of background radiation leftover from the Big Bang, called the Cosmic Microwave Background. It appears everything in the universe circles some …

Go Ravens! Interesting note: if 49ers win, it will put them number one in the league for Super Bowl championships, so let's hope the Ravens do their job and stomp them out quickly, effortlessly, and with as much unnecessary pain inflicted as possible!

Thought this was interesting: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21195765 With Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and City it's obviously a very crowded airspace. Are there any comparable ATC areas elsewhere in the world, or does the London area take top prize? Ian

Apologies if this is blatantly obvious to some! As I am sure most of you are aware many operators are switching from onboard laptops to Ipads for crew to carry out pre flight performance calculations and store charts. Myself and a fair few other simmers have been pleading with the TOPCAT and Navigraph creators to port there products on IPads and various other tablets not only for realism but ease of use. Both company's have stated that they are very busy and have no plans to do it in the near future. Anyway, to cut a long story short, inspired by the thread over on the PMDG 777 forum regarding step climbs and monitoring the aircraft on route, I decided to downloa…

I notice all videos I've seen show airliners being flown from the left hand seat. I would of thought pilots that are from right hand drive countries would prefer to pilot the plane from the right hand F/O seat. Is there a reason the captain doesn't use the right hand seat instead?

Hi guys (& gals!), Just saying Hi. My name is Helen and I live in St. John's Newfoundland, and I am 10 hours into my PPL. I have been using flight sims for around 3 years now, in preparation for my PPL. People often don't realise how fantastic flight sims are for learning the theory, and procedural side of aviating. I have been using FSX for 3 years, and also Aerofly FS since it's release. From the sim perspective, I mainly fly GA aircraft, almost exclusively on the MegaScenery Earth 2.0 stuff, and will mainly post on the screenshot forum, as I like to keep a screenshot journal of sim tours I take! Great to meet you all! Helen. x

My home town is being affected by the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Oswald. We have had cyclonic winds for 24 hours and over 300 mm of rain. At the moment winds are gusting to 45 knots. The significance of this is that YBBN tower will be evacuated if winds reach 50 knots as the swaying will be considered unsafe. The weather bureau has warned of tropical thunderstorms in the area for this afternoon so it looks like the weather nightmare will extend a little bit longer. Anybody using the flight tracker app is in for some very interesting stuff. An Emirates 777 did two missed approaches before it had to divert and just saw a VOZ 737 perform another missed approach…
