Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. Wondering if anyone who lives in or near Washington DC (or anyone who's visiting) is planning to attend the WW II flyover tomorrow. If so, what do you think the best vantage point will be? I live here, but am still trying to figure it out. Torn between the Mall and maybe the Kennedy Center balcony (that's just before where they'll make their turn from the Potomac toward the Mall over the Lincoln Memorial). For those not able to make it, there'll be a livestream on the website (linked above) and a live broadcast on warbirdradio.com. But if you're going to be there and have good line-of-sight recommendations, please post. Thanks!

  2. I don't care what flight simulator you use. I'm would like to know if anyone keeps track of their own finances outside of their flightsim? I don't mean using FSPassengers, FSEconomy or AirHauler or any of those programs. I find them to be extremely unrealistic. Let me know. Thanks

  3. Hey guys, Anyone planning on watching the 1st AA 787 departure from DFW at Founder's Square tomorrow? She's scheduled to depart around 17:25 local, flight number 2331 to Chicago. I'm going to try and be out there. Just hope she departs from the west-side runways! (36/18)

  5. Putting this in either forum would have resulted in biased feedback so I posted this in Hanger Chat. My question to everyone one out there, what's the verdict? For me: 1. FSX: SE has the years of add-ons that work right out the box (slight update required in some cases) and P3Dv2 is getting many things converted but has a long way to catch up. 2. P3Dv2 has superior updates and look to the core engine yet FSX: SE has a performance upgrade to what it had before 3. Both are under development more than people realize behind the scenes 4. Add-ons for the most part will have a higher cost for P3Dv2 versus FSX: SE but for products like 'Orbx' it might …

I have just had a look at the "Overall Top Posters" section of the forum (I didn't even realise it was there), and a couple of observations are worth noting......... Jim Skorna is the top poster (about as predictable as night following day) Chock hasn't posted since 29th July 2012! I remember Chock being an active and enthusiastic member of AVSIM, so I just wondered if there was a reason why he has not been here for nearly three years. Has he just become bored of flight simulation? Has anything happened to him? Does anyone know?

Thinking of buying a Buick Verano but not sure the sedan life style is for me. I've had a station wagon for the last 15 years and problem is I want to have something VERY quiet and comfy and affordable. How do you 4 door sedan owners haul bulky or larger things when the need presents itself? (like a push mower or small table or lazyboy recliner or 4 8 foot 12x2's)

  12. I was sorry to see on the news that a light aircraft crashed 10 miles short of its intended destination of Dundee in Scotland. The fatal crash happened in bad weather. (BBC news item link enclosed). I know Dundee well and it's a superb scenic location..as the following landing approach video shows. (Note the Tay Rail bridge in the video -rebuilt soon after it collapsed in a storm in 1879 taking 75 passengers and crew with it.). Funnily enough, a few years back another light aircraft -also heading from near Inverness to Dundee - ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing in a tree! (url enclosed). Dundee scenic approach BBC news item - recent pl…

  13. I originally posted this in another forum, but its just as good here, too. Just a list of rarely heard of, and maybe interesting places to fly over and see how they are depicted (if at all) in whatever your favorite simulator is. The last picture is of one of the most remote settlements on earth. If you don't think thats interesting, then just enjoy the pictures! Huacachina, Peru Aogashima, Philippine Sea Giant mole hills. An entire population of over a thousand residents live underground in dugouts at Coober Pedy in northern South Australia Monemvasia, Greece Isortoq, Greenland Gásadalur Village, Denmark Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the ANZACs' landing on the shores of Gallipoli, Turkey. This is a tribute to the ANZACs who paid the ultimate sacrifce, and to all past and current servicemen and women of the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces' They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

  15. Hi all! Just wanted to share this cool bit of info I found in my blink feed: http://technology.inquirer.net/42045/pilot-to-fly-solar-plane-across-pacific-for-5-days-5-nights In case you haven't heard about it, these two guys are attempting to travel around the world in a solar-powered airplane. However, they had a little delay in China. They started in Abu Dhabi in March and slowly flew their way to Nanjing, China. Their next stop will be in Hawaii and will take 5 days if I read right. Their cruising altitude will be about 30,000 feet and they will experience temperatures ranging from extreme coldness to extreme heat (I assume it doesn't have A/C...). The aircraft i…

  16. In case you haven't been following the gaming press, Valve (the company who runs Steam) recently added a marketplace for people to buy payware mods to a game called Skyrim, as well as allowing modders to put their previously freeware mods behind a paywall. The caveat is that the mod creator only receives 25% of the proceeds - Valve and Bethesda (Skyrim's developer) takes 75%. After a huge outcry and protests by the gaming community Valve changed their mind and pulled the plug on the payware mod marketplace, as well as refunding all purchases. The debacle has unfortunately torn the community apart and I'm surprised no one here discussed this event in depth. Here's a go…

I purchased Aerosoft's F 14 X and tried all weekend to download the software but was unsuccessful. I contacted them about my problem and asked for a refund due to the fact I could not download their software. They emailed me back and said I had downloaded the software many times therefore they are unable to refund my money. Then they had the nerve to ask for feedback if I was satisfied with my purchase. So to others, be forwarned. Granted it was only 30 bucks but in 10 years of playing with flight simulation I have never been treated this way. And I can assure you I will tell as many people as I can about my experience.

  19. Hi Everyone! Whether it be to late or not, there always is time to answer, or at the least ponder, the following question: "What would my dream sim be like?" For the simple... What would you want in it? How you want it to work with your system? How complex do you really want it to get? And in comparison to modern technological advancements... how ethical is it? For the computer professionals... How would you want the integrated code to manipulate the system? What are some key points of optimization? But most importantly, whether DoveTail makes something half decent, or whether a company comes out of the shadows with an unimaginably beautiful sim,…

  20. Hey all, I fly P3D and xplane 10 and was curious if there is a add-on that tracks certain things automatically for me. I would like it to track, taxi times, air times, taxi fuel, inflight fuel, leanings speeds and aircraft type. The base logbooks don't do such a thing so is there a good pay ware add-on for these things? Thanks, Marc

I know, I know, not many will still be running the Operating System No Longer Supported By Microsoft. But bearing in mind my flightsim of choice is FS2004, there is no better OS for the FS box. On booting up this morning, I got a banner page in my browser requiring activation within 3 days, of my copy of WIN XP. A little surprised I went onto MS online support with my story, to be told repeatedly that I should upgrade to WIN 8.1, XP no longer being supported. When I asked who then, might have supported my copy of XP with an Activation Requirement, I was told to get WIN 8.1... If genuine (which I think it is) this looks like blackmail to me, Anyone had this …
