1. Many years ago I am sure I read that although (as we all know!) fuel in centre tanks (when present of course) is used up first, the centre fuel pumps are not activated until after take-off (for fire hazard reasons). I forget the exact reasoning for this, but I have followed this procedure for many years. But now, Googling shows no mention of it. Did I invent this, or is it actually valid??? 2. On approach, do pilots select their own speeds or are these always dictated by ATC? I know ATC can and often do give speed instructions, to get the right separation between traffic, but otherwise, are pilots free to choose their aircrafts' approach & descent speeds them…

Hi, Not sure if this belongs here but here goes... I have started flying with a virtual airline and the despatch does not indicate the parked gate. So when I load a scenery/position at the departure airport, I have trouble choosing the gate, just trying to archive a but of realism here. Is there any resource that tells wpt he gates used by specific airline at an airport ?. Thanks

I know ForeFlight has been mentioned, is well known, and even has the ability to connect to the sim for navigating. I loved ForeFlight in iOS when I trialed it but no way could I justify the cost as an enthusiast. There are several other apps but none really look very good or have much to offer, IMO. Today I decided on an app that looked nice and has a few top reviews. It's called Takeoff and is excellent. It essentially gives you METAR information for airports near you. You can also select a distant airport or input favorites, so you aren't confined to your region. It has TAFs, PIREPs, NOTAMs, Winds Aloft, SIGMETs/AIRMETs, and pretty anything you'd gather …

1000' on downwind (about 850 agl) is good - but after the descent starts, we end up at about 250' agl turning base to final. The "instructor" doesn't seem to notice.

Hi Why on the PC-24 you only see a small cover behind the front wheel and not two panel on side before the wheel? Never seen such on a plane and need that data for modeling. How is the front landing gear covered? Thanks

In case anyone still wondered if the upcoming DTG Flight School might offer an in-depth and realistic experience for us simmers: it won't. It will mainly be fun. Check this quote from the Q&A topic. I personally for instance LOVE reading 'dry and boring' manuals for hours to get a plane going. And I personally like a sim to show me how to fly a real aircraft. I sincerely hope all of this will not apply to the later to be released full sim...!

I recently completed a cargo flight from EGNX to KCVG with a Southern Air DHL hybrid 777 freighter. (See "Cargo flight at sunset" in the screenshots area.) All went well Prior to that I did the same run in one of DHLs 767 freighters... and nearly spread it all over the Covedale & Delhi areas :Black Eye: ATC (stock FSX!) had vectored me into position to intercept the localiser for 18L at KCVG at 2400' altitude - the airport was off to my 10 o'clock position. The ILS was already tuned in to both NAV radios. I activated the LOC on the autopilot, then the approach. (I should have just activated the LOC) The 767 turned right, but I initially thought nothing of i…

This new interview with Mr Hood about DTG Flight School might be of interest: http://www.pcgamesn.com/dovetail-flight-school/onwards-and-upwards-dovetail-flight-school-and-plane-simulation-in-the-modern-era There are some new insights into the design considerations, for example he did not like the unrealistic hoop flying in previous versions, used to use FS 2004 - and grew up with early flightsims on the Amiga (I remember those well). I didn't particularly like the hoop flying either, but in MS Flight the Aerocaches search was actually quite fun following vague hints.

I am doing a bit of low-key beta testing for PF3 (ATC software) and to clear up one issue, I wonder if any real-world ILS rated pilots who 'can't get enough' of their job and read the AVSIM forums could say exactly what the procedure is for turns onto final approach, at airports with ILS. Presumably, as a/c get near to the localiser, the autopilot is already armed to intercept the runway heading. Does the pilot have to wait until ATC instructs him/her to make the turn, or is it taken for granted, as it were, that when the localiser is intercepted and the needle starts moving to the centre, the aircraft will turn to the runway heading without further permission from A…

The Aviation Herald recently released an analysis of the Swiftair MD-83 crash in July 2014 over Mali, Africa. http://avherald.com/h?article=477c75de/0005&opt=0 I think it's pretty interesting. One of the causes of the accident was the failure of the crew to acknowledge a stall condition and their failure to perform a satisfactory upset recovery. The stalling condition was reached in the first place because of icing on the Pt2 engine sensor, which reduced the thrust output of the engines. Another interesting point and contributing cause to consider is the AutoPilot logic of the MD-83, which is capable of not only flying the aircraft into a stall when in A…

Hi all, I wonder if one of you computer savvy guys has an idea how I can go about solving a problem I have with dropbox. I can't upload files anymore - it used to work fine until recently. Now the upload just cuts off after about 10 minutes. I can upload to other sites so I suppose it can't be my web connection (which is not so good, I also use WiFi which makes it worse). Any ideas on where I should start troubleshooting would be much appreciated! Sascha

Morgan Freeman is flying all over the world in a new Natl Geo series entitled "The Story of God". Does anyone know the make and model of the corporate jet he is using? Looks like one of the Hawkers to me, but I am not that savvy on Hawkers. Just curious. Best Regards, Ray

Hey guys, I asked a question about the Q400 over at Majestic but I thought I might get a quicker response here. 1. I'm assuming that all altitude restrictions have to be handled manually, correct? What's the best way to do it? Keep the Flight Plan up on the FMS and just monitor the ND and dial them in as the fixes approach...change alt...Alt Sel...IAS...one by one, all the way up? 2. How do you calculate how much runway you need? I mean, you can get a V1, V2, etc. for any weight but how long will you roll? 3. Do you fly with FS2Crew? Gregg

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/04/23/us/boeing-dreamliner-engine-fix/ Describing it as an "urgent safety issue," the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered modifications on specific General Electric engines on some 787 Dreamliners because an icing problem could force those engines to shut down in flight. Friday's FAA airworthiness directive stems from a January 29 incident aboard a 787 flying at about 20,000 feet. "Ice shed from the fan blades ... causing the blades to rub against the fan case, resulting in engine vibration," GE Aviation spokesman Rick Kennedy told CNN. That forced an engine shut down and the aircraft landed safely with its remaining engine. …

Due to poor sales of PC's...Intel has announced yesterday, that they will be cutting 12,000 jobs from their org...or about 11 percent of their entire workforce, due to poor sales of their CPU's. Man, do we all remember the 'days of Intel'...and the sticker moniker , Intel Inside on most every new PC and laptop from the 80's and 90's, coming off everybody's factory floor... The sun sets....at the close of every technological 'day'.... I don't think our hobby should be expecting that breakthrough CPU....Moore's Law is finished.....it quietly died in the corner.....and 12,000 corpses are about to be thrown onto the funeral pyre, next month.... http://www.re…
