Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. When I bought DTG FS I was surprised to find that even my small agricultural airfield was there. The runway is not the latest ( last year ) data, but still very good. Other airports around Europe had their runways consistent with recent data, and not the old FSX stuff... It would be great to be able to update to DTG FS databases, even if for a price..., for FSX:SE

Is there a way to determine who has filed a DROTAM? I've noticed a lot of 400ft AGL DROTAMs in the DFW area, but it's not real clear if these are individual filings or government operations (NASA/Weather, FBI, DoD, etc). The lower altitude operations imply these are more individuals than govt agencies, but I can't be sure.

Since about two weeks ago, after I log into AVSIM the fourm pages black out as I scroll down. some times I'll be reading a post and this will happen on one page of the thread, but the other pages will be fine. It,s always the bottom of the page that blacks out and it scrolls jittery when i am reading one of the affected pages. AVSIM seems to be the only web site I have this issue so I was wondering if I have a virus or if anyone else is having this problem?

I found these two articles interesting this week: Singapore Airlines not renewing its first A380 lease http://www.bbc.com/news/business-37362488 737 Max and A320 NEO will be used for long haul flights http://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/news/84325382/humble-boeing-737-and-airbus-a320-set-for-longhaul-journeys Not that the 737 Max or A320 NEO will replace the A380 as that will most likely happen by more 787's and A350's. Interesting that we are coming to the end of an era of large jumbo jets and entering an age of smaller aircraft and larger fleets.

Afternoon Folks, I wanted to give some long overdue praise to Art Poole and the 80 sceneries he has so generously created for us. Centered mostly in Florida but covering as far west as Lubbock Texas, north to Toronto and a handful in The Bahamas, Art has created some freeware masterpieces. His Southwest Florida International, Tallahassee and my home airport, Melbourne, are just excellent freeware fields. If you haven't looked at his work take a look here: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fsx&Name=&FileName=&Author=Art+Poole&DLID=&Sort=Added&ScanMode=1&Go=Change+View Thank you Art!

  10. Started by Flight simmer,

We've been getting some hardcore jetstreams over SE Aus lately, so perusing FR24 has been quite fun. Jet airliners at altitude well under 300 knots ground speed Except this SAAB 340, these things are ordinarily not very fast!

  11. Started by Flight simmer,

Was browsing FR24 the other day and came across this: Evidently backed on on another flight tracker app.

First lesson on the Diamond and it is frustrating. I have not been able to complete the lesson. For some reason the instructor says that I'm off the runway and it fails me. I try to keep the aircraft on the centerline but to be honest it is way to sensitive to my rudder pedals. Any advice? Trying to get back into Flight School after many months.

Hey guys I have to take a very long break from FS. Well, a long break from pretty much everything really. It seems my tumour has re immerged, and I’m going in for emergency brain surgery yet again. There can’t be that much of it left for **** sake. Can’t say I’m looking forward to it. That’s twice now they’ve said it’s no longer operable, and twice they’ve changed their minds;-) Mmmmmm….. This all started after our middle eastern friends left me with a tiny piece of shrapnel just behind the ear, but as ever, good old HM services won’t have it that way, as the docs can’t state categorically that’s what started it. OK, off my soap box;-) Going in later today, so my …

  15. Had Flight School for a few days now and thought it was time to have a play with the sky colors that came with the sim (sky_noon_0 ~9.bmp) Fist off the bat, if anyone from Dovetail has a problem with this, I'll stop posting modifications. It's your software and I will respect your decision. The sky colors shown here aren't actually from Dovetail, I built them from scratch. The pictures are showing version 10 (it's a lengthy process). Everyone's views on these are likely to vary, some might think they're ok, some will want kill them with hammers. The main thing I wanted to achieve was to make the sky and clouds brighter than the distant ground. A bonus is the ligh…

Just saw http://training.pilotedge.net/page/ratings the other day and did some practicing for the V1 certification last night. I think this could be quite a lengthy (fun) learning process I could work on, if I decide to go through all of them. Have any of you guys done any / all of them?

  18. Guys, As you know we were very lucky to have Colonel Doug Champagne, America's most decorated contemporary fighter pilot with us yesterday at Flight Angels. He flew 157 combat missions around the world, including both Gulf Wars, Afghanistan and was the response pilot sent after flight 93 at 9/11. His talk using the Aerosoft F-16 was INCREDIBLY popular with everyone who saw it yesterday, so by popular request here are some edited highlights of those talks (he spoke for nearly 4 hours flying the F-16 all time! about his combat missions as an F-16 and A-10 pilot and operations commander) By popular request, here are a couple of videos - (apologies for the quality…

Anyone reading should sign up for one of Colonel Doug Champagne's streams/flights. I just finished watching one and it was amazing. So much great info, I was really just captivated by the conversation for an hour. He is an ex USAF F-16 and A-10A/C pilot. Two more flights on soon: Go to: http://flight-angels.com/ click on Schedule, and then click on the Special Events and look for F-16 with Colonel Douglas S. Champagne Combat flights by USAF hero fighter pilot, Col. Doug Champagne. Join Doug "Bubbles" Champagne as he puts the F-16 through its paces. There are also flights with ex pilots of the Concorde, in the Concorde, and fligh…

Thinking about giving Euro Truck Simulator 2 a try to create some variety from tanking around the skies in a jet. Does anyone else sim in other modes of transport? I.e. American Truck Simulator, Euro Truck Simulator, Farm Simulator, City Skylines, Fernbus etc? They all seem so cheap compared to the cost of flight sims and the numerous add-ons needed to support flying.
