Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

  1. Started by Joe Flyer2,

I saw the Forum section, and I think polling is a great idea! Potential questions: - "Which flight simulators do you use?" (list them) - "Which flight simulators did you stop using and why?" (list them) - "Do you think X-Plane 11 has potential?" (Yes/No/Maybe) - "Do you think Dovetail Games Flight Simulator has potential?" (Yes/No/Maybe) Just thinking.

Any pilots out there, I need some advice. I am separating from the military and unfortunately am unable to snag a UPT slot from the military (Pilot program), as it is quite competitive and there are so few spots each base is allowed to give each year (1-2). I have been looking into how to become a pilot In the civilian world, and reading a lot of these "road to becoming a pilot" guides, but feel like I am in a bit of a pickle. I have bills lol, mainly just my truck payment no other debt but bills none the less as in things I would need to live i.e. food. I have been working on getting my private pilots license so that I will be able to use my GI bill for further ratin…

  5. Guys, I am proud to announce that Keystone Publishing (our new publishing company that supports charity and is hosting Flight Angels) is proud to announce that our publishing partner Turbulent Designs have released Angwin Airport for FSX! It is available right now and better still, all proceeds go to Flight Angels! I cannot thank Turbulent enough for donating a whole airport, including significant development cost to Flight Angels! Thank you guys, you are the best! It is with the greatest of pleasure that we announce that Turbulent Designs, the developer of many of the flight simulation community’s most popular airport scenery expansions, including Melbourne, Frida…

I want you to know the only reason I bought it is because I'm an aviation geek. I don't want to waste time reading about your personal or domestic life unless it pertains directly to the flight story. I don't care how many bars you hopped in New Orleans, how many groupies you picked up, or about the Kobe Beef steak you ate in Japan. I want to read flying adventures, or about your training progression, or any thing pertaining to airplanes or flight. This goes for "Airways" articles too. If I want the other stuff I'll pull out one of those hoke Nicholas Sparks books my wife reads.

I had a look at a few 3D flyovers in Apple Maps and holy cow, that's awesome! I would pay big bucks just to have ONE city to fly above in a trike or any other simple plane! Why isn't this tech used already in sims? Isn't there some clever programmer who could add a simulation option to those maps? Anyone heard of any plans for using this tech in the future? It totally blows autogen out of the water. And even hand placed 3D buildings.

Anybody who has followed the OTG blog or YouTube channel knows I'm a huge fan of REX and their work. But as a business person and as a customer I have to say I'm disappointed in their launch day infrastructure. I get it that many sim devs are small shops and can't handle the server back-end of a large software firm. So I'm pretty forgiving on download times. BUT - if you're going to heavily promote a product, email customers to invite them to a Twitch stream that further promotes that product, and then forecast "imminent" release for several days all in the interest of spiking demand, you'd better d**n well be able to serve that demand when the launch comes. Otherwise you…

  9. Hi folks, I've just installed REX Worldwide Airports over Zinertek textures. I like REX WA so far, nice interface and beautiful textures as usual with REX products. Maybe I am wrong but why didn't they replace control towers textures?? This is the only issue I am having with this new addon which is not a revolution but a very nice addition to our sim world. Few pics for you at LFPO: PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS ONE SET OF REX TEXTURES AMONG MANY OTHERS Z: R: Z: R: Z: R: Z: R: Z: R: Z: R:

We are seeking two additional library manager volunteers to help review and process new files that are uploaded to our library. The commitment is about 2-5 hours a week. It can take on average 30 minutes each day to login, review files, and approve them. We also need help answering occasional e-mails to library@avsim asking for assistance. If this is something you'd be interested in helping us out with, please apply here expressing your interest. I'd like to get a couple volunteers trained (~45 minutes to train) prior to Thanksgiving, so you'll be hearing back very soon. Thank you for your interest, Chase @ AVSIM

  11. When NASA started sending astronauts into space they quickly discovered that ball-point would not work in zero gravity. To combat this problem, Congress approved a program and NASA scientists spent a decade and over $165 million developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, on almost any surface and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300 C. The Russians used a pencil... -----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Dovetail team and fellow Simmers For the last little while I have read the forums and have seen a lot of negative comments about the upcoming "New" Sim and a lot of "demands" of what Simmers expect and there has also been a good amount of positive feedback as well, so all in all its good conversation which in the end will help the Dovetail team make the best product they can. I just want to say, Thank you Dovetail, for helping give us simmers something new to look forward too. I'm sure the product you will put out will be absolutely fantastic and I can't wait to give this thing a whirl! It's great to be a Flight Sim enthusiast right now, the future is bright!…

On the Wikipedia page about the Lockheed A-12 (the precursor to the SR-71, operated by CIA and with a slight better performance than the SR-71), it can be read: "There were a number of reasons leading to the retirement of the A-12, but one major concern was the growing sophistication of Soviet-supplied SAM sites that it had to contend with over mission routes. [...] During a flight on 30 October 1967, pilot Dennis Sullivan detected radar tracking on his first pass over North Vietnam. [...] During the second pass, at least six missiles were fired [...] He noted the approach of four missiles, and although they all detonated behind him, one came within 100 yards (91 metr…

In trying to better assist users that are experiencing download issues. I decided to create a separate post here to give advice instead of trying to address each need throughout this forum. First, we are very sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. Again, we are working hard to handle the load. If you purchased from the REX Store please try the following: 1.) If you are using the REX File Transfer Manager tool to download, start it again and under the "Download Type" option select the 2nd option "Use direct download links to download files". This will provide individual links to download. You can use your download manager built within your browser to cont…

  16. Hello, first of all, I want to prevent the comments saying thats its not possible to save the plane or what ever, its mostly for testing user reactions or videos (fictional incindents or reconstitutions) and increase realism with failures possibilities I saw these failures on Air Crash Investigation (Rudder hardover is the one I really want to have, I just finished watching Air Crash Northwest 85) As I know that PMDG's .ptp files keep infos from previous flight for failures (Mean Time Before Failure) so I guess only PMDG can do this -Rudder Hardover (Eastwind 517; USAir 427; United 585 (Thermic shock on PCU); Northwest 85 (Fatigue)) for 747, failure can be f…

  18. I've seen air incidents where Russia has shot down passenger planes from the United States. I know none of America's three major carriers fly to Russia. In fact, I don't think any US based airline flies to or over Russia. But you can fly a Russian airline to America (say Aeroflot) which really confuses me. Why is that?

  23. Hi guys. I just bought and installed the new Germany North region from Orbx. I have also acquired lots of freeware airport upgrades from various Germany sites....there's lots to chose from. After installing one freeware airport for Babenhausen (which appears not to be a defunct WWII airport) I went to Google Earth to check out the area. I found there is very little if any street view of Germany in Google Earth. Anyone know what that is? Its like a hole in the middle of the ocean, high definition satellite coverage all around. Even good 3d Lidar views but no street views. Bryan

  24. So as not to alter the original thread... The REX announcement I'd like to see is an FTXCentral style free program that becomes the root of all the programs REX has or will release. It would contain categories like 'Textures' and 'Tools' and all previous texture sets like Essentials and Overdrive and TD4 and Soft Clouds would all be collections that a person could choose from and install as desired. All collections could be updated automatically from inside the root program ( REXCentral? ). just a thought.
