Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

We have wonderful and interesting times nowadays that I'm sure most here do appreciate. But with mostly seasoned people in these forums, I wonder about the title question. It can be one thing, or several.

  3. Hi guys, I need your advice to decide which to buy REX Airports HD or Zinertek HD or REX DIrect. Which one is the best for visual enhancements. I fly FSL lab a320 with ASN and ASCA, GSX and DX10 Scenery fixer. I want best graphics with best FPS. thanks.

If I were to bet, I'd say that x-plane 11 will take the lead. It packs all the features that we have been requesting. It's 64 bit, and the developers have been at it for many years, totally devoted to giving us a nice niche simulator. The one to watch is FS2. It's smart, innovative, incorporating great technology, but needs time to grow--as with many sims before it have done. Lockeed Martin is for the military, so it's using us only to get good feedback only. Yes, they are improving it, but the engine is the same and the upkeep for us is just too time consuming and sometimes very frustrating. XP11 is clearly setting a new standard: the default airplanes are great,…

  5. One of the coinventors of the groundbreaking IBM 360 mainframe, Erich Bloch has died at age 91. One of his quotes has relevance to flight simming. He had a computer at home and another at work and carried a smartphone, he said in the AtBuffalo interview last year. But he cautioned, “You have to make sure your technology doesn’t take more time to keep up with than to actually use.”

I wish I could be half as lucky! This Australian gentleman certainly qualifies! Why you ask? Well here’s the thing. He won one lottery as any normal lucky person would, but here’s the kicker. When a local news station asked him to talk about winnings, he complied and agreed and went on their show. The news station asked him to reenact him buying and scratching the card, which would’ve been pretty normal. But instead when he tried to reenact it… HE WON 250,000 DOLLARS EXTRA. Wow, just wow!

  9. I thought this was pretty funny. Back when Jets used to refuel at Gander Airport in Newfoundland Fidel Castro was a regular using the airport as a stop over. He also used to delay the stop over because he loved the snow and would go tobogganing with the local school children. This is one woman's memory of Castro: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/fidel-castro-toboggan-fun-woman-memory-gander-1.3869323 Bizarre to say the least

Perhaps someone has done something like this before, not sure. In my case, I just looked up all my accounts and records and found: FSLandClass Country Kit Central Canada 1 by Burkhard Renk for FS2002August 18, 2002 I subsequently bought all the landclass made by Burkhard. Funny it doesn't seem that long ago, but it is 14 years. Prior to this I used freeware addons and made my own for FS1998 and FS2002. Since then I have amassed many $1,000s in purchases not including several PCs. Bryan

  14. In a little-noticed update, the Flight One GTN 650/750 now allows for importing of user waypoints and flight plans, but only in the custom GTN format. I mentioned to Steve Waite that exporting of flight plans to the GTN would be a neat feature for Ideal Flight (which is already a phenomenal program BTW). Well, within a few days, he did it. If you are one who makes a lot of flights between smaller airports or bush strips that are not in the GTN database, this is a big time saver. No longer do you have to program waypoints by coordinates. You can now press a few buttons and import a complete flight plan, including waypoints or airports not in the GTN database if they are i…

  15. Hi, I was wondering how reserve fuel works when you have multiple alternate airports during a flight. I know that the fuel minimums require that you have enough fuel to fly to an alternate airport, but what if you have multiple alternates? Do you need enough fuel to be able to fly to all the alternates or just the closest one?

Personally, I'd like to see Carenado's S550, Hawker, and Phenom 300 go on sale. Last year, the only jet offered at a discount price was the Phenom 100 IIRC. I could also hope for the CJ2, but it was released this year and probably will not be discounted. I'm also hoping Flightbeam puts KSFO HD at their normal discount rate. In 2015, it was offered at 10% off. Maybe if we're all on Santa's nice list, FlyTampa will offer one of their once in a lifetime sales.

  17. I know some of you guys are flying across the oceans on some of these VATSIM events...5-10 hours. What do you do during all that time? Do you just let the flight run? Do you check in from time to time? I just don't know how I'd sit there watching the airplane just flying along for hours on end.

Thus may be known by all, but I was just made aware tonight. Awesome ADS-B tracking site, shows military and civilian aircraft that don't appear on places like Flightaware. I can see the local police chopper for example scanning the town. Go to Menu and filter options from there. https://global.adsbexchange.com/VirtualRadar/desktop.html#

Greetings! I have been working on a generic LuaLaTeX template for building your own aircraft checklists. I am looking for any feedback the community could provide to make sure they are usable for a broad audience, and hopefully they make it easy for people to make their own and share printable checklists in the future. Generic Checklist: https://github.com/19TDG2000617078/00-CL-1 Example Checklist: https://github.com/19TDG2000617078/00-CL-1/tree/500S I'd love any and all feedback you guys have. The checklist pages print three pages across onto a regular US Letter 8.5" x 11" piece of paper, so after printing you just cut the page into thirds and put them in or…

Yes, they do go there (including a DASH 7 at least once), but maybe not THIS type of twin turboprop. I don't think it could in real life: I've just spent the last hour "flight testing" Mario Noriega's work of art. I had thought to fly INTO Courchevel in an Avanti - a bit more impressive than a WT9- Dynamic. However, I thought I'd see if you can actually get OUT of LFLJ. Makes sense. No point going there if unable to take off again (unless it was an absolute dire emergency!) The solution I arrived at was only 4 pax. not 6. 100lb of cargo, not 300+ (I think the stock amount is 357lb). 10% fuel load, about half the available up trim and full flap. Despite th…

Recently I saw a video of which a 737 landed in Moscow. In the video the pilots were flying on HPA which is flying on QNH if I'm not wrong, and they're LAND ALT was set to 600 feet. When they were on the ground the altimeter also read approximately 600 feet. So my question is: Why is that? I thought that during QFE operations (like it is in Russia) the LAND ALT should be set to 0, and the altimeter would be set so that it would display 0 feet while on the ground?

Hi, When you are about 30 minutes from the oceanic entry point, you should contact the oceanic atc, and therefore you must leave your current frequency. So, can you just leave your current frequency without telling them in order to Contact oceanic? And also I've learnt that you should squawk 2000 about 30 min before entering oceanic - But I have seen a few aircraft flying over the Atlantic not squawking 2000, so have they been told to squawk otherwise?
