Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

Many years ago when I first got in to flight simulation, I inquired about how to determine and identify which files were included on the MS disks. I wanted to know because in the early days, turning off certain files could improve my performance on the system I had at the time. I came across this site which among other things had a grid map graphic of the world under the heading of "base file information" and the site began with the URL msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc(?) The horizontal axis was labelled 0 to 11, and the vertical axis labelled 0 to 7. Does this site still exist, or does anyone have a saved copy of that grid map? I would like to print out a…

I am second generation Norwegian-American. My grandparents emigrated from Norway and settled on a farm in Michigan where my father was born. About 30 years or so there was a big family reunion at the farm. Almost 100 people were there. That's where I learned my ancestral home was a place called Baverfjord. I was flying in Orbx's Norway from Alesund north to no place in particular enjoying the scenery when a familiar name popped up on my FS Airport Utility. It's a popup that gives the name and code of the nearest airport. Gravvold Airport. NO17. Gravvold was my grandmother's maiden name. The airport is pretty close to Baverfjord so I turned on the GPS…

Hi everyone! Completely new to Flight Simulation! Looking for advice on which flight simulator to buy. Microsoft, Xplane? I've been trying to read up as much as I can. Anyway, does anyone have any advice on software to purchase or can you direct me to a beginners article. Thank you! Mike

Hi, I wondering if it is possible to track flighttrack inbounding for example EGLL. With flightradar24 it is just possible to multiselect 6 flights which is not enough for my intention. Anyone know how I can visualize the flighttracks form all a/c's? Just need the track. Thank you very much for your help 🙂

2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the water landing on the Hudson River by US Airways flight 1549. That cold day back in 2009 was supposed to be a routine flight to Charlotte, North Carolina from LaGuardia airport in New York. Little did the crew and passengers know that their flight was going to be anything but routine. Under the control of First Officer Jeffery Skiles and former Air Force pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the Airbus A320 took off from runway 4. Barely 3000 feet above the ground, the airliner flew into a flock of Canadian geese, disabling the engines and crippling the twin engine jet. With time running out and the airliner now bleeding pre…

  7. Over the decades I have purchased many products from these folks. I can't recall a time lately when an update reinstall has gone smoothly. Their complicated system of inputting certificates and or logging into accounts is painful, especially when one has not used it in some time. Just last night I try to do my RXP GTN update for XP11, I am several updates behind, and I can't log into my account using my tried and true password, which fails and so I get desperate thinking perhaps I changed it and can't recall and try other know passwords which then locks you out of your account. Then I open a ticket, then they respond by saying I've sent the ticket to the wr…

Hi all. Could someone set me straight on this. I have never been sure of when to set standard pressure. Here is an example of my confusion. I depart Manchester (EGCC) using the LISTO 2 R Departure. This SID holds you at 5000 ft until you reach Listo. Now the transition altitude in that area is also 5000 ft. I flew this departure a few days ago with a very large pressure difference,I think it was 29.47 or something like that,so I climb to 5000 ft like I am supposed to, but my ATC program gives me a "reminder" to be at 5000 ft which I am actually at using local pressure, so should I have changed to standard pressure when reaching 5000 ft,or wait until I am abov…

Hi, Are there any websites that display the amount of traffic at airports by hour and by day? Something like this would be really helpful when planning flights. I can probably figure out the traffic density by using many websites, but I can seem to find one that offers this as an easy to use feature. Googling doesn't seem return any helpful results. BTW, while searching for the above I came across www.flightsfrom.com. It is a nifty site that will show all flights from an airport and you can filter by aircraft/airlines and other parameters. Thanks.

Just to keep this issue alive FSPilotshop is the only site that Ive had dealings with that tries to charge to re-download purchased downloadable products. As a direct result of this policy I have since avoided purchasing anything further from this site.

I recently bought the PMDG737-800/900 base package. I knew it would be expensive because of the dreadful exchange rate between the UKP and USD. Whilst I can accept that because that's not the fault of the seller, what does annoy me is the surcharge applied to the purchase when paying by credit card. For that purchase of £70.17 a further £2.10 was added. That looks to be a 3% surcharge. Talk about money for old rope. Does it really cost that much to process a credit card transaction? And what options does the customer have? I can hardly pay by cash. Do people use PayPal and if so what are their charges like?

For those of you that have Airline Experience I have the following questions concerning status of the aircraft before the crew shows up for a flight. Yesterday I did a flight from KMDW (Midway Chicago) to KDFW (Dallas, Ft. Worth). Set the flight to leave early, 6:30am, so it was dark and, if you’ve seen the news, very cold. The aircraft, B737-200, arrived that night before and was left parked at the gate all night. Now my question is, just before the pilots show up to board the aircraft…what state would the aircraft be in? · Would the jetway be attached? · Would the front passenger door be open or closed? · Would the …

Hello fellow Aviation-Enthusasts, while spotting today I noticed some differences on the A320 wing to fuselage connection. (I'm sorry but I don't know the correct term. But hopefully someone will tell me) Both pictures are taken from the "almost" same position. Did Airbus change the Design over the years or is it really just an optical illusion? I tried to compare both aircrafts from different angles but the result was the same. 1. Aircraft: A320-232 SX-DVU, MSN 3753 / 2009 2. Aircraft: A320-232 SX-DNE, MSN 7014 / 2016 *sharklets* #1.: #2.: As you can see, the newer one has a more *wavy* connection. …

I remember playing these and staying in my room for days while my mom occasionally slid water and raw meat for me under the door.....😋 And it's also nice to see Truesky, lost to us with the death of Flightsim World, finally used to its higher potential. https://store.steampowered.com/app/502500/ACE_COMBAT_7_SKIES_UNKNOWN/

Hi guys a bit of a strange topic but did any of you noticed the change of engine of the aircrafts? They all seem now way forward not beneath the wing as before. Not only in the sim but in real life. You will tell me new technology maybe the airbus neo etc. But have a look at the A300, the 737 classic , even the 707 in all aircrafts the engine is way forward and a huge pylon attached to them. Does anyone remember this like that? I am a dedicated simmer and aviation fan for many years and suddenly i discover this new type of placement. This is not only happening with planes but with other things as well, history as we knew it has changed. Anyone who thinks the same?

Some of you old timers might remember Jesse Callahan from the old Hangar Talk forum at Flightsim.com. That's where I met him. Our first face to face meeting was at a Confederate Air Force Air Show in Midland Texas many years ago. He was a member and sponsored me for a membership. Midland was about half way between our homes; mine in Roswell NM and his in Jasper Texas. We have been guests in each others homes. He and I both let our memberships lapse when the group bowed to pressure and changed the name from Confederate to Commemorative. We were both avid flight simmers. He tested my sceneries when I was still doing them for FS2004. He beta tested my Hamilt…

I took Light Sport lessons between 2006-2008 in Microlight (1320# gross weight) and Trike aircraft, I got fairly proficient in flying from takeoff to landing, turns around a point, S Turns even in 20 knot winds, and VFR navigation but I chose not to continue, I just cannot speak fast enough to handle ATC well. Even though ATC comms are not required to get a light sport license if you wish to hangar at an uncontrolled airfield. Maybe one day I will try again. I am pleased to see more Light Sport aircraft being added for P3D and Xplane. Vskylabs has created several great Microlights, a set of trikes, and a gyro for Xplane, and I can vouch for all three aircraft types th…

  21. I need to design some instrument approach procedure chart for a fictional airport Flight Sim. scenery I work on. I remember a decade or so ago there was one available. I think it was "Final Approach". It was pretty simple and did the job fine but I can't trace it back now. Just found this and it looks like it has developed to a professional software and its interesting when you consider it started from an old Flight Sim application. www.airnavigation.com/products/final-approach/ Question : Any ideas how to make some simple approach plates for flight sim use without professional software ? I have sketched them in plain paper and they're fine b…

Hello all, I do not know if this is the right area for this topic but, Moderators, please move if it is not. I have heard nothing from this incredibly annoying guy, Novawing24, but I miss his weekly news video. His last effort was a roundup of 2018 news and releases in December or early January, but nothing since. I am wondering if anyone has any idea of what is happening and if he is all OK. Any news is welcome Regards Tony Chilcott

Hello everyone, I don't know if this is the correct place to post this. Please forgive me if it's the wrong forum. I learned that the PT6 on the Q400 is a free turbine engine, but the external exhaust is in the rear. I, for the life of me, can't figure out how that works. Yes, the intake can be in front externally and run under the turbine to the rear and enter the turbine from there. But how does the exhaust go to the back if the space underneath is used for intake. If anyone can explain this to me, I will finally be able to sleep again. 😂
