I inhale autobiographical books where pilots share their career paths with flying adventures and misadventures as well as technical stuff about different aircraft they've flown. Seems so many go off into stories of how they outwitted a check pilot or an arrogant Captain or even company management. I just keep in mind I'm reading from the vantage point of the writer and there are two sides to every story. So many of these stories go into tales of what seems juvenile if not dangerous pranks on novice flight attendants or fellow cockpit crew. Examples like calling attendant to bring a pitcher of water to the cockpit of a CV440. Cap then opens his side window and pours the …

I had read and always thought fires were needed in the redwood groves to keep the forest alive with young trees. But I read this and I guess they can be overwhelmed. Giant sequoias are adapted to fire, which can help them thrive by releasing seeds from their cones and creating clearings that allow young sequoias to grow. But the extraordinary intensity of fires — fueled by climate change — can overwhelm the trees. Having been to most of the groves in California I hate to see these giants destroyed. This is only part of what man has done to destroy the natural world. I recall that not so long ago Joshua Tree was closed for some…

I got a letter from my ISP the other day saying they are getting rid of their e-mail service. I've been with them for 25 years, ever since they ran cable into my neighborhood. But they say they are dumping their e-mail because many of their customers are going to G-Mail and other e-mail servers that offer more 'stuff'. Someone suggested I go to G-mail, which I did and yesterday I had an IT come to the house to set it up for me to be more like the e-mail I have been used to for 25 years. He did a good job of doing that for my wife and I because I am no longer capable of dong it myself. People send me e-mails, I answer e-mails, and I send e-mails to people I select from…

They want a core back PLUS the $22k for the replacement 85 ($25k for a 90, $32k for a 100, and $21.5k for a 60/70/75 last I saw). It's a pretty horrible deal." Replacement cost of Tesla batteries!

  13. Our family has a job that oddly relies on outdated faxing for a number of forms. This is a remote job done mostly from home, so we're using equipment at home. We have a copier/fax/scanner/printer in our home office, but no phone jack. We have a fairly new house and it only has 2 jacks in the house, one in a kitchen, and one downstairs. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to easily add a phone jack so we could use the printer we have? Or as an alternative, any suggestions for faxing from home?

On Monday, September 13, at about 6:39 P.M. Eastern, Harald Paleske of Germany and José Luis Pereira of Brazil both caught on video a pretty significant object impacting the surface of Jupiter. From the size of the impact, a rough guess is an asteroid or comet a few hundred feet wide. That’s no slouch; a hit by something that size on Earth would leave a crater about a mile wide. See more information: Something just hit Jupiter (dailykos.com)

The CAB said the crash that killed Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens was caused by the pilot Richard Peterson being unfamiliar with the gyro being used. This explains what is said following 6:56 of the first video. --------------- In the second video at 2:28 the man who took Buddy's phone call to schedule a flight to substitute for a cold bus ride, and he was the owner of the charter flight company, holds up the actual gyro from the plane and says the FAA report is ridiculous. ------------- CAB accident report: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Aircraft_Accident_Report_for_Buddy_Holly's_crash

Of course, I know about Flying Down to Rio: it was the very first movie that paired Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire (in a rather dumb-looking dance, but never mind). But wait! There's so much more. Between WWI and WWII the U.S. became nervous about the German presence in South America, particularly in aviation. (Gann writes about this in Fate is the Hunter.) People in South America had little reason at that time to be fond of the U.S. given the Monroe Doctrine, Big Stick. Spanish-American War, etc. Juan Trippe had a mail run between Florida and Havana and the crazy idea of a world-spanning airline. The problem was, it was going to be tough for any free-market U.S. carrier …

The other evening I watched an old war movie called Action in the Atlantic. It was about the merchant marine carrying supplies and weapons to England and Russia during WW2. I've seen a number of movies and documentaries on the convoys and the German U-Boats torpedoing them. But in all of those movies the ships are moving west to east. But didn't all of those ships have to come back to the United states to pick up more cargo for Europe? Did they come back in convoys or piece meal one at a time? Were the U-Boats after them? Would they waste torpedoes on empty ships? Did they have escorts? Noel

I have seen really no publicity/news releases/etc. about the event taking place next week. I would think they would be hyping this with daily announcements? I'm planning to attend (fully vaccinated & wearing a mask), but I happen to live in San Diego so my decision was fairly easy.

So it appears MS have found a way of doubling performance on X-Box Series S and Series X. Little to no developer effort and they are doubling and in some cases 4x improving the performance of games on XBox striving for 4K 60/120FPS. Hopefully that's good news for MSFS as well. It appears the major game dev's are on board as well. I wonder what MS has done with the console to literally double performance in these titles and if they could do it with MSFS on the PC and console too 😉 Anyone more intelligent than myself (that leaves this wide open) know how they have achieved this? Have they just been Software locking the titles and now unlocked them? I'm curious how th…

Hope everyone is well... I wrote a blog post for my day job (the thing that pays for all the hobbies) and actually thought it was quite pertinent to share here as well. While our lives may not depend on it (although it feels like that at times) so much of our FS world is now Network dependent. I thought I'd share. Our marketing department is cleaning it up before it gets published by the company but here was the original post:
