https://guernseypress.com/news/2023/01/21/islanders-enthusiastic-about-new-electric-bus/ 150 mile range, more than enough for the 100 mile daily milage of a Guernsey bus. More expensive but half the cost to run and easier and cheaper to maintain. It's hoped they will encourage people to use the busses more and cars less. Somehow I doubt it will make much difference, people like their cars. "The Chinese manufactured Yutong E9, has been provided by UK importer Pelican and will spend two days being test driven around Guernsey’s narrow roads. Head of Yutong UK Ian Downie said that the first day of trials had gone brilliantly. …

Today is my 74th birthday. While noodling around, I just Binged around and discovered this group photo of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps from 1950 of the Harvey Seeds Post 29, Miami, Florida. Much to my absolute delight, my late father appears in the photo! He is middle of the bottom row. William L. Leaming. He played a tenor snare drum with the band from 1946 to 1955. The group won the National Competition four years in a row, if I recall correctly.

I guess all of you have read about chatGPT by now. I tried to have some fun with it. The following excerpt is 100% unmodified and of course is based on the Hudson incident. I think it shows ENORMOUS potential. Of course it's not following the real world phraseology with accuracy, and it also produced a couple of funny lines, but I think most of you will agree that this has the potential to be leaps and bounds over any synthetic ATC we've had on flight sims. Consider that chatGPT is a general purpose AI, not made specifically to recreate ATC communications, and yet it can still simulate an ATC dialogue better than an average layman person. If some instance of it would…

What is one of the coolest lines a pilot has said to the passengers? Pilot: Hello passengers. I know everyone is in a hurry but I wanted to let you know that my mother in law just called me. She is running late for our flight and is currently approaching the security line. Everyone on the plane gave a collectively groan. Pilot: I don’t want her to make the flight so please hurry and get seated so we can pull away from this gate and get out of here. Everyone laughed. And they began moving more quickly to get seated. This morning I installed the AerosoftDHC-6 Twin Otters to P3Dv5. They work fine. But when I go to a location and try to get one from the aircraft library I get this funny error message: I hear a DING! and this comes up. "Oh no, that's not the right aircraft." I click on OK and the aircraft I want comes up and works fine. Noel

In light of a recent post by Mr Mills about seeing undesired ads on Avsim, I decided to experiment. I'm sure this is known to many, but it was new to me and obviously only pertains to those brave enough to not use ad blockers. Artificial intelligence is a fancy buzzword for "it's a really big statistical model". Yes, The Google (thanks G.W. Bush) does track cookies in browsers and it will generally try to tailor those ads to your browsing history and/or purchasing habits. For this reason I regularly run 2 separate browsers. One for stuff I'd rather not have tracked (emails, etc), and another for stuff that I don't care about having a tracking history of. Becaus…

This is a petition to save the MD-10 that was involved in the 1994 hijacking. It was recently retired and apparently going to be scrapped. I think it would be cool if they put it on display somewhere. https://www.change.org/p/tell-fedex-to-save-historic-md-10-n306fe?fbclid=PAAaa52ZK9ix6xmTsiPO_2iokDE9THUdHKDZ46882xjgByre_9_CEHwdrdE7U

It seems like the future is trying to aim us towards driverless vehicles. Trucks, cars, and now cabs point towards the possibility of an automated vehicle future. And of course planes have had autopilots forever, so..... How comfortable are you with it?

According to the reconstructions, the pilots of flight AAL106 instead of turning right on the taxiway, continued straight across the runway 4L while the Delta 737 was taking off. The 737 Delta pilots managed to stop within approximately 1000 feet of the 777. https://videos.dailymail.co.uk/video/mol/2023/01/16/4723690538358688345/640x360_MP4_4723690538358688345.mp4

I hope the moderators will permit me to tell you a very funny story -- an embarrassing story that makes me look quite uninformed about the technology of targeted internet advertising. Starting a few months before Christmas, I began noticing a lot of pictures here on the MSFS forum of women in swimsuits. Now these pictures were very tastefully showcased, and there was nothing inappropriate whatever about them. You could have shown these same photos on any television program. Trust me, I had no complaints at all. Nonetheless, I couldn't help wondering why clothing manufacturers would choose to advertise their women's swimwear here on AVSIM. That didn't make any se…
