Hangar Chat
This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar. Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here. Hi, I mentioned it a while ago, I wrote a German flight simulation book. I know Avsim is mostly English-speaking, but still I want to give a heads up. It's sort of a textbook; on 500 colored pages I cover the most important topics from the first discovery flight in a C172 up to a long range flight in the 747. It covers MSFS, XP, AeroflyFS and FlightGear - most topics are valid for and examples usable in all sims (and if not, I have alternatives). I don't link it here directly, to make this advertisement a bit less advertisement-like, but it can be found with the title "Fliegen lernen. Flugsimulation mit Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Aerofly…

I've been reading up on the difference between HDR and BLOOM. Words did not adequately describe the difference to me. However, I found this picture which explain the difference in a glance. This works for me:

I think it's sad they don't require a class in formal logic in order to graduate high school. And that many don't even offer these courses as an option. What he is saying in the first part of the video is true. Using simple step by step logic will clearly show that. This Monty Hall Problem was first broadcast in a popular magazine by a reader with the handle of Savant. Thousands of readers wrote in, most of them saying it didn't matter if the contested kept his door or switched. Hundreds of these writers said they had PhDs. This majority opinion was wrong, as applying formal logic would have illustrated. A PhD in science or the arts only makes you competent in that f…

Is it me? Or did the release of major airports addon payware come to a slow grind? From the Big 5, DrzDeigns, FlyTampa, FSDT, Flightbeam, LatinVFR there is NOTHING that really has been released recently. Their website/forums give no indication of what/when is next. For the North America, we really KSEA (DD), KPHX, KTPA (FT), St Marteen (FT). Is it also safe to say, if Asorbo maked a handvrafted scenery like KDFW, no one would attempt to make it?

I've been on Amtrack trains that have been as much as 7 or 8 hours late. It doesn't bother me because I expect it and plan for it. If I have to change trains at an Amtrack hub like Chicago or Los Angeles I schedule my connection for the next day and stay at a hotel overnight. A comfortable room and a good book and an extra meal in the dining car make running late confortable. On an Amtrack trip from Seattle to Los Angeles we were running several hours late. I read the entire Hunger Games book before we reached Chicago. For me it was an enjoyable trip. Much better than trying to read a book while stiuck in an airline terminal These situations are become more fr…

If true, building a base on the Moon just got a whole lot easier. Blue Origin say they have perfected a technology to create solar panels directly from Lunar regolith. They say the silicone produced is of extremely high purity, 99.99% purity. And becuse 50% of the lunar regolith has trapped oxygen, you can generate oxygen for the colony as a byproduct. https://interestingengineering.com/innovation/blue-origin-unlimited-solar-power

Ken Shirriff on Twitter: "How did Russian cosmonauts know where they were? The Globus INK (1967) showed the position of their Soyuz spacecraft on a rotating globe. It is an analog computer built from tiny gears. I reverse-engineered the wiring (which inconveniently had been cut) and we powered it up. 🧵 https://t.co/uLWN1IBJP8" / Twitter

First of all i want to be clear that topic is not to start another war about which platform is better. Topic is addressed for those who actually owns both versions of 737 and are able to compare those two. I was reluctant to buy MSFS version but finally gave up and have -600, as price is really good. I am not impressed so much of MSFS version as many YT creators are. I have my set of feelings like MSFS cockpit looks a bit cartoonish ( cannot put my finger on it, but i feel odd ), i think ground handling in P3D is much better, not a big fan of MSFS mouse interaction ( even i use PMDG mouse mod ) - lags and dissapearing pointer, but most important is to …

Looks like NASA and SapceX are planning to boost the Hubble telescope into a higher orbit and extend its lifespan. It will involve a SpaceX Dragon capsule, and its first depressurization and space walk. NASA and SpaceX signed an unfunded Space Act Agreement Thursday, Sept. 22, to study the feasibility of a SpaceX and Polaris Program idea to boost the agency’s Hubble Space Telescope into a higher orbit with the Dragon spacecraft, at no cost to the government. https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2022/nasa-spacex-to-study-hubble-telescope-reboost-possibility

I have a lot to be thankful for. Betty died less than two weeks after leaving the hospital. My daughter and her husband and my grandson came down from Denver to help out. And my granddaughter drove 1500 miles from Charleston to help out and she brought along her youngest son age 4. A four year old full of energy and running around the house jabbering away was a perfect contrast to Betty's passing. The house wasn't the somber place it could have been if it had not been for little Johnny. That window between 80 and 100 is when we are supposed to die. At that age death is not really a sorrowful thing. It's expected. It's what happens to all of us.…

This morning I was going to take down all the sympathy cards I have displayed on a book shelf in the living room. But I got a thought. Saturday, Feb 25th, would have been Betty's 85th birthday, So I emailed my daughters and granddaughter and asked them to send her birthday cards. Then the gardners came in to move some furniture for me and I told them about it. So they are going to send a birthday card too. So is the lady who lives next door and the rest of the ladies on the block. As the cards come in I will replace each sympathy card with a birthday card. I think that beats gathering them up all at once and then trashing them. Noel

Passengers boarded their Air New Zealand flight to New York City on Thursday evening prepared to spend 16-plus hours in the air which they did. But they didn't expect to land right back where they started. That was the fate of Flight NZ2, which turned back to Auckland over the Pacific Ocean because of a power outage at its destination, John F Kennedy Airport. https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/02/16/auckland-new-zealand-flight-16-hours/

So, after my computer upgrade, I'm trying a lot of eye opening things to test performance... Pretty stunned. (I almost feel like this is the last computer I will ever need) One of the things I bumped into was this bit of creepiness. FPS ranges from a low of about 30 (all settings maxed) to a high of about 80. Would be interesting to see what some of you with 4090s are getting.... Also wonder what Frame generation might bring to the table....

I'm thinking of recreating the long-vanished airport of Rambang, which was located on the east coast of Lombok. It was primarily used during the Dutch colonial era, and closed after Indonesian independence or thereafter. I've found one or two photos of buildings, but nothing that confirms the airfield's layout. So my priority is either aerial photographs or maps. Any assistance would be appreciated. This is the only photo of the facilities that I can find:

I bumped into this a few weeks ago while considering turning around and going right back to Universal/Disney after my recent trip there earlier this year. I stored the info at the bottom of my mental lint trap, but now I'm thinking about it again, and wondering at frontiers reasoning/motive.
