Microsoft FLIGHT Archive

You will find here messages posted leading up to the launch of MS FLIGHT on February 29th, 2012. This forum was shutdown 14 days prior to the FLIGHT launch. This is a closed sub-forum and as you read this archive, you will quickly understand why.

  1. Imagine this in a few years:"Flight" online is a single realtime MMO. To participate in this MMO, you are a virtual pilot who collects skill from the flights, training and testing you have completed. In this environment can either fly personal or fly commercial. Flying personal is pretty much "free fly": you set up a GA flight plan and go. But the real action is flying commercial: you select an available flight which matches your current experience level. These flights range from bush hopping to international airline flights, as well as ground control duties, and are set up dynamically to get the most out of the current state of MMO activity. For completing commercial fli…

  2. There are a number of reasons to believe that FLIGHT has serious simulation capabilities built into it that are simply turned off or wound down. I suspect if someone has the Beta and they go snooping around looking at all the usual suspects in their system they might be pleasantly surprised by what they may find. As some people have mentioned, those who have comprehensively tested the FLIGHT engine in the existing Beta's advanced challenges, there is some serious flight simulation engineering and rendering at work. The more it is evaluated, the more impressive it becomes. If anyone really thinks that FLIGHT is just a slap-dash, stuck together, haphazard, gutted FSX carryo…

  4. Beta testing Flight for a few weeks now, it definitly has a "gamey" feel, and seems too simple. (I'm getting bored very quickly-that's where the add-ons come in) However, the GREATLY improved game engine and mechanics in Flight have potential for a greatly improved FSX experience. I just hope the add-ons for planes, ATC, etc. won't be too $$$...*crosses fingers*

Most would possibly agree that the quality and longevity of FSX is, in large measure, due to the array of addons (free and pay) that have emerged over the years. It took Microsoft management awhile to allow an SDK. They seemed focused on the success of the closed Apple model. Once the SDKs appeared wonderful addons showed up and it was like getting a new product. Now we are faced with an allegedly closed product as a follow-on to FSX. This presents some problems for those loyal addon producers. If a sizable number of FSX users move to Flight the customer base remaining for FSX will shrink. The authors will see no opportunity to move their wares to the closed Flight and may…

You know. I'm thinking, this is a website for enthusiasts who have dedicated thousands of hours to this hobby and to each other. No, we don't always get along, but that's because each of us is passionate in our own way, and that is because we LOVE our hobby. We have the full gamut of skill levels here, from those who are experiencing a flight simulator for the first time and have never been in a real airplane, to 25,000 hour 747 and 777 captains. Over the last 25 years, there have been literally thousands of video games released from PAC MAN to Battlefield 3, and this community of simulator fans remain loyal to this nerdy, niche hobby. At places like Avsim we swap fl…

  8. Below are system specs for Flight running on high and low settings. Notice that the Hard Drive space required is 10GB.FSX Hard Drive space requirements is 14GB.Take On Helicopters (a region-specific modern flight game) Hard Drive space requirements is 20GBThe only conclusion that I come up with is Flight will not be a global sim. (I hope I eat my words, by the way)It will very likely be a Hawaii only game that would have a pilot career path based on missions. I also suspect that MS will produce additional Flight titles for other regions, such as San Francisco, Seattle, Swiss Alps, Rio de Janero, etc. By doing this, MS will be able to produce titles that will appeal to …

  9. As many of us though, and ALL of us feared.. It IS Hawaii only.. Maybe this could be simply a beginner demo.. Surely they wouldn't waste this kind of time and resources on a piece of software that is free and then banking (no pun) on the sales of add-ons.. Possibly seeing if the demo flies (again no pun) and is worth the investment of further development..Still what a major disappointment..

Does anyone remember New Coke back in 1985???http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_CokeCompany headquarters in Atlanta started receiving letters expressing anger or deep disappointment. Over 400,000 calls and letters were received by the company, including one letter, delivered to Goizueta, that was addressed to "Chief Dodo, The Coca-Cola Company". Another letter asked for his autograph, as the signature of "one of the dumbest executives in American business history" would likely become valuable in the future. The company hotline, 1-800-GET-COKE, received 1,500 calls a day compared to 400 before the change. A psychiatrist Coke hired to listen in on calls told executives some p…

It has been a while since I've had this add-on installed, but isn't Hawaii on FSX with Megascenery Hawaii superior to Flight Hawaii? Judging from the leaked videos that I have seen, I'd say yes - what then do I have to look forward to in flight that I don't already have?

Yesterday I posted on a thread at this forum regarding how good FLIGHT will be. After that I thought I should really make it even more evident that I think, and probably most of us do, that FLIGHT will be a GOOD FLIGHT SIMULATOR!GAME? Yes of course, game too! What's the point? What are, after all, the flightsims I've been using since 1988??? Games! Some of them are so well designed, and after a long history of expressing my dislikes regarding MSFS's various versions, one of them is MSFS, that I keep them up to this days! The time when I used to desperately look for a new kid in town, when FU, FU2, FU3, TR's Fly!, Propilot, RTS-Pro,... and X-Plane started to become known t…

Me: Well, I just applied for the Flight beta program. I thought it would be closed, but I was able to complete the entire application process. I have no idea if I'll be chosen or not, but I wanted to at least try so that I can see first-hand what all the hoopla is about. And, hoopla it has been if you have even casually read the threads on this forum.Reader: But, why the change of heart? I thought you weren't going to give Flight a second thought?Me: I didn't give Flight a second thought when I first heard about it and tried to decode the marketing materials that trickled out of Microsoft. However, some of the screenshots looked like what I now see courtesy of REX…

  16. Me. And I'm speaking for myself from MY experiance with it so far.A few weeks ago I visted the "official" site and signed up for Beta testing. A few days ago I get an email congratulating me on acceptance into the beta program.(let me stop, right now, whoever says that its a vilolation of the "beta" agreement to discuss the existance of the email,,,,, cause I dont really give a rats arse)Ok, now that I have made that clear, I'll tell you that today i logged into the Windows "Live" official site to read what i am supposed to do and download the game. It said I could download the game on as many computers as I wanted. Cool, cause I have both fs9 and FSX on one dual core ddr…

I just took a minute to post as I have just climbed through 3,000 feet out of FS9's GREAT Sacramento freeware airport.I have been thinking quite a bit about Microsoft's Flight Arcade Game since 'some' news and leaked Beta vids have come out. I reviewed my emotional reaction to finding out that it was just that...a game for the kiddies, with nothing to entice those that have been their loyal, dedicated following for the flight genre. For those users, that proper and in-depth world aviation depiction is paramount. For those that would wish to immerse themselves into 'what if'.... I had had the career or financial opportunity to experience the thrill, satisfaction, and intell…

and I would strongly suggest it's worth the read. Very well stated, and I'm willing to bet right on the money. I think there's a lot riding on Flight, so to dismiss it so early in the game is very short-sighted IMHO.Cheers,Todd

  20. I'll be ignoring this particular forum, post this post: this forum is awash in "isms".There's optimism, pessimisim, doomism, gloomism, pollyannism:just a boat load of "isms", with no concrete evidence for even a blush "yeahism", FOR the purists. There are arguments pro con, stoning, and a touch what seems to be tangible dislike of "the other" in here.I have been reading this forum for years, longer than some of the "long term members": did not read it that much, but I would from time to time. Yes I remember the "fights" some of you had but, there is somethingfundamentally different this time around. What a few here have not yet realized is that we are at THE crossroads.Good…

  21. Some of you are not going to like this message, so take a deep breath now...I have deliberately split the earlier topic "Perspective" to focus on one issue discussed in that thread that deserves a separate conversation. This statement is what motivated the split:Tom Allensworth, on 15 January 2012 - 10:53 PM, said:"The FLIGHT Team leadership did not state that they would develop beyond FSX, nor did they say they would not. We asked that question directly, for all the obvious reasons. You draw your own conclusions.""Hello Tom,call me stupid but I cannot draw any conclusions from the above. Still in the soup. I don't understand why this secrecy from the FLIGHT Team. I state…

  22. FSX is a Cassette Player and Flight is a CD Player.MS really has no where else to go within the limitations of the architecture. What would you expect FSXI to have that you don't already have considering your 3rd party add-ons? Remember, to keep all your add-ons compatible with FSXI, MS will have to stay within the confines of it's "cassette tape medium". What would you expect MS to add to FSX to justify FSXI at a $59 price point? Better ATC? We have that. Better mesh? We have that. Better planes? We have that. Better weather? Got it. Better graphics? Today's hardware still can't push FSX to max settings. Virtual airlines? Done. The reality is, Microsoft has…

I'm currently don't an Alaska Airlines flight out of PHNL to KSEA. It's amazing how fast one get's out of the scenery area covered by Flight in a B737-800. Even with all the islands covered it's almost not even worth it to have Hawaii only as an option compared to what we're used to...
