  1. So this one has me a bit lost. Can an O/C affect a PCIE slot, especially considering PCIE was locked in the BIOS? I did crank up the NB and SB voltages to hold the 4.45 OC so I "guess" that is what did it but I would have thought if I locked PCIE in the BIOS they would be safe regardless of the OC...Here is the situation:I started having BSOD's but only on one of my two 8800 GTX cards. It was very strange. I tried drivers etc... but the BSOD's starting getting worse. Then, the card that was BSOD started to see 10-12 FPS in FS???So I disabled that card and fired up AM3, used only my secondary and sure enough 355 FPS as soon as started. Disable card 2, enable card 1 a…

I recently began to have a problem in fsx with the menu bar being blurred, often to the point of being unreadableAND the ATC popup was so faint and blurred that it was completely unusable. So I unintsalled fsx, defragged the drive, did a new install of FSX, SP1 and SP2. This did wonders for my fps, but no chnage to the blurring problem. The scenery textures are no problem .. quite sharp.I have a radeon X1650 card, and did recently install the ATI v7.12 drivers for vista 32 bit... could this be the problem?any help will be much apprciatedRon

Hi guys I've just purchased and installed a new ATI Radeon 3850 (512MB) Graphics card. I've installed the latest drivers and upgraded my power to 550W. When playing FS9 in Vista I'm getting constant short crashes when panning around or putting any pressure on the system by way of large scenery items such as airports. The message reads "Display driver stopped responding & has recovered". I've read other posts relating to heat of the card or dust but as I say this is a new card in a very clean interior with what I would have thought would be enogh power. The card is also running within parameters regarding the GPU temperature around 60C.Any thought??

  5. Running FS9: The fonts in the ATC window, red Banner Warnings in the lower left of the screen, etc., aren't nearly as clear as my ATI 3870 x2 OC, but overall performance is better with the nVidia card, plus I got my first "VPU Recover" issues last night with the ATI.I thought I read a very simple fix to improve the font resolution in FS9 on an nVidia card (may have actually been an XP setting) last year or so, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was, or find it now.Can anyone help me improve this little detail? I posted this over in the FS9 forum but didn't get any responses which indicates to me that A) no one knows or :( I'm completely losing my memory and…

I have two PATA hard drives and am thinking about installing a new and larger SATA drive to consolidate storage and remove some of the clutter and cables from my computer case. I use Acronis to back up my system. So, my question is, can I restore a backup to my new SATA drive and have all configurations recognized, including the several partitions I created on my two current PATA drives? Basically, I think this is like restoring programs and registery to a new computer, tho it is really the same box...just a new drive and configuration. Thanks for any help.Sherm

Any recommendations? Currently using 2 3-year-old 150Gig WD's, and I need more space to accommodate the many nice scenery add-ons for FSX. Any recommendations? I'm looking at >2 x 300 Gig (probably 2 500 Gigs) to be set up, as I have things right now, in RAID 0 format. Can the newer 7200 RPM drives compare to my older 150 GIG drives running at 10K? I cannot do top-shelf, but I'm willing to spend a little more for quality and dependability. Your recommendations are most appreciated.Cheers,http://www.my-buddy-icon.com/Icons/objects/red_3d_plane.gifAlex ChristoffN562ZBaltimore, MD

XP Pro SP3 built only for FS2004 and related programs. I see no stuttering with an average 60FPS. I've seen peaks of 230FPS. All sliders are maxed and a Samsung 27" at 1920x1200. However once moderate clouds are introduced, the frames drop to 20-30 and not buttery smooth but flyable. With heavy clouds sometimes I'm dropping into single digits. I use ASV and FE. I loaded FE lower resolution clouds. Not much different. AI traffic seems to have no hit on the system whether at 100% or di…

  12. Oy! Well, for those who have followed my quest for knowledge and performance, with a healthy dose of greed . . .ASUS sent me back a refurbed P5E. I'm guessing it belonged to another "enthusiast" just like me. It doesn't fly nearly as well as my first P5E. Not even close. As I look back, I realize I had a REALLY excellent mainboard and memory combo, well before I gave it it's final test for max performance. I was on vacation for 2 weeks, and very nicely when I returned home, on my porch was the RMA'd replacement. I first tried to resuscitate a clone of my former XP install using the repair install procedure. All looked very well, except with either the OCZ or mushk…

  14. After weeks of hard work, diligence, tenacity and ESPECIALLY all of your help and patience, I'm finally flying again -- and the picture is beautiful from up here! My new computer hit 120+ FPS in FS9 a couple of times today, in an Overland 737-800 with Ultimate Terrain and Flight Environment installed. There are still some huge bugs to iron out in this box (still getting flashes of colorful lines every so often around FL10K) but I wanted to thank all of you folks a LOT for hanging in there with me, and helping a novice computer builder along the way. I'll post more tomorrow on how I finally arrived at this point, but I'm taking my wife to Les Miz tonight and I have to run…

  15. Last year I purchased an AMD Athlon 64X2 4000+ processor in order to replace my stone age Pentium 4 1.6. That's the best thing I did with my computer, and I ended up liking the results (previously I increased RAM from 512MB to 1GB and changed the old 32MB ATI Radeon 7500 for a 256MB eVGA GeForce 5500, without having outstanding results). Anyway, now that I left home (without the PC, unluckily), I'm thinking about buying a laptop. I know I may be comparing apples to oranges, but I'd like to know some things before purchasing:1) Which laptop processor can be comparable (in performance, obviously) to the one I had at home (Athlon 64X2 4000+) for FS2004?2) A little bit off-to…

  16. I've been using an ATI 1950x in a Dell Dimension e520 (6520? dual core) for the past year and have never had a problem with cloud rendering. I'm running FS2004 - NOT FSX. But now I have a new build and it seems ATI just isn't cutting the mustard any more. Has ATI done something to their drivers lately? Is my new E8500 processor just pushing too much info to the video card now and because I had a lesser system in the past it never mattered? Or am I just overestimating ATIs capabilities now?I put in a brand new Visiontek HD3870X2 OC Edition in my new build last night (specs below) and as soon as Active Sky loaded up the mostly cloudy conditions at KBOS (using low res, …

I have 4GB of RAM, Superfetch turned off,and I was getting lots of hard drive thrashing while making my decent into LAX. I have MegaSceneryX SC installed. As I was closing in on the airport my frame rate was around 10 fps with lots of hard drive thrashing as I could hear my hard drive thrashing. Also it took longer for the textures to show on the wings while making my decent into LAX whereas when I took off from Las Vegas, the textures were loaded instantly on the wings when switching to right wing view. The plane I was flying was the Level-D 767-300. I have AI at 100% and use mainly WOA traffic and some that I put together manually. I don't have autogen turned on and…

Anyone had any joy with mATX boards?Ive been using a ASUS mATX board in a wife friendly cube sized box, and am about to switch to Intel processors. If you're wondering why mATX then it's simply to make it wife friendly. I've a NAS with 1TB of disk for non FS stuff,so I don't need tons of disk in the actual FS machine. So it's basically a stripped down machine just for FX.My thinking had been to buy a E8400 and a relatively cheap MB. X48 hasn't made it to mATX yet. I've a couple of gigs of 800Mhz ram, a fastish Seagate drive, and a 8800GT.I know this isn't the state of the art but all things x48 are expensive right now and with new processors due later in the summer this s…

Hi,Just installed FSX, a birthday present from my son a couple of months ago, which had to await installation of my new PC (Quad Core 2.66 Ghz 4GB). I expect my main activity will be exploring UK scenery in connection with my walking and mapping interests. But who knows, I suspect I'll later get absorbed in the flying aspects too. (A few minutes in a straight line in the micro-thingie after somehow becoming airborne from Redhill Airport was more exciting than I expected !)Anyway, I have no joystick (never been into gaming).
