  1. The link below is an article that absolutely spells it out for system memory, how its interaction with your system and games (FSX..etc) is enacted, and where games are headed...64 Bit. I have read a few documents and articles on this subject, but THIS ONE....can bring anybody up to full speed on why V.A.S. is handled the way it is...and exactly, and truly HOW MUCH is really allocated for FSX and its other 32 bit ilk. It really spells out what we are up against, and WHY...when using FSX, tweaking FSX, and adding a gazillion 3rd party files to enhance it. Again...I recommend this as an FSX user 'must read'! The article has 6 pages, and I hope you don't gloss over any …

So here's my PC build - it's pretty expensive but I last bought a PC in 2005 and because of its limitations I'm still flying with FS9, so it's time for a change. Greetings all, I'm very early in the process, but I'm thinking of buying a new PC. The last few I've purchased have been directly from the well known PC companies. I've heard about independent companies who put PCs together for you. Any suggestions as to which of these companies are the best? I'm in the USA, so I would guess it's better to buy from a US-based company. Also, I'm looking for something that will run FSX with a decent to good frame rate. My add-ons are the PMDG planes (NGX, MD11, and eventually the 777). I also use Active Sky for weather. What type of components would you recommend? I'm looking for something that won't break the bank (low $1000s, if …

Fresh out of Intel Developer Forum 2013 (Beijing), we have some good info about Haswell's overclockability via Anandtech. Some highlights: Looks like BClk overclocking is back, and memory frequencies are going to scale up to 2933 from the factory (more with BClk overclocking). Voltage regulators being on the CPU package mean overclockers now only need to adjust 2 voltages when overclocking, logic and DRAM. Should simplify things quite a bit! Max overclocking headroom without using BClk is 8GHz. Yes, 8GHz. Of course this doesn't mean anyone who isn't using LN2 or similar will ever hit that, but maybe there's more headroom for those of us that still use "traditiona…

I have just upgraded my PC by installing (well, actually my son-in-law did it) a new mobo (Asus P8Z77-VLX) with an i7 3770k and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. I have 3 x HDDs, 2 @ 250GB and 1 @ 1TB. As I was going from a 4 year old Gigabyte board with an Intel Q9650 we didn't think Windows would boot up and sure enough it didn't. I wanted Windows to install on one of the 250GB drives, intending to put FSX on the other 250GB drive leaving the 1TB drive for all my data and flightsim downloads and other files. Without Windows 7 being available we couldn't see which of the 250 drives had previously had the Win 7 install. So we took a chance and selected HDD 0 and disconnected …

  11. Hello all, I have an i7-975 Extreme CPU. This morning, in re-reading Word Not Allowed's set-up guide, from his blog site, I revisited the issue of running FSX with the CPU set up with HyperThreading enabled within the BIOS, or not. After about 20 different saved flights and situations within FSX, I have (for myself at least) concluded that FSX gives you faster and more consistent FPS's when in HyperThreading mode, than not. In fact, for my system, a more sustained FPS of around 7 FPS, than when HyperThreading is turned off!!! Yes, I used in Job Scheduler, within my FSX.cfg, a setting of 14 for non HyperThreading, and a setting of 84 when having HyperThread…

Hello all fellow simmers, First of all, let me say im a newbie in the forums, im no expert what comes to hardware but have some knowledge to tweek fsx etc. Recently I had to format my hard-drives of my current PC and re-install everything from scratch. This has taken a week or so, (and its not completed yet) as I have other things to do than sit in front of my PC 24/7. Now when I have installed FSX and tweeked the cfg etc - im feeling something needs to be done in order to boost my frames a bit. Because of this idea, I thought, maybe Ill give a try at the forums, maybe someone can point me into the right direction. My ultimate plan was to just update some parts of…

  14. Hello Further to my last post, I went ahead and got the 3570k and the Corsair H55 cooler. Last night I overclocked it to 4.5ghz and successfully tested it for stability, no problems it passed the stress test. But when I open up FSX and load up the PMDG 747 at somewhere like Dubai with 100% AI, it is wonderfully smooth at 30fps, no smoothness issues whatsoever but then a few minutes later it always crashes to desktop, and I'm not really sure why. I wondered if it was because I don't have enough RAM, but at 8GB I doubt its not enough RAM. Hello, Before we get started, no, I am not planning to run FS on a laptop. I am looking for something for home and business use. Home will be the typical tasks. For work, I do need to use MS Access and ArcGIS desktop. I won't be doing heavy work in Arc but I do need to fire it up from time to time when in front of a client or working from home. The main problem I am having is trying to decide on a processor. I don't have a lot of money to spend - I'm thinking about $1,000. For FS, you need a quad core, oc'd - basically the best you can afford. With laptops the quad core rigs that are small (<15") are very expensive if you want something close to 3GHz. So…

I'm starting to do some research to OC my computer. Specs are in my signature I'm not wanting to do anything too extreme; maybe make my way up to 4.0- 4.4. I'm not the most tech saavy, so the guides that I've been reading seem to be a little overwhelming. I found this one, which has my exact specs and is very easy to follow: http://forum.computerlounge.co.nz/yaf_postst5398_ASUS-P8Z77-V---Pro---Deluxe---Overclocking-Guide-For-Ivy-Bridge.aspx But, this guide doesn't really suggest other programs i should use to monitor temps. I found this guide from one of the threads that is going on right now: http://www.overclock.net/t/910467/the-ultimate-sandy-bridg…

I do not want to spend ~ $300 and find an increase of only a few FPS. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hey So after reading Word Not Allowed's hardware and software tweaking guide and applying those, I'm still getting under 5 frames per second on the ground at OMDB with FlyTampas addon, PMDGs 747 and UT2. It now seems my only other option is to upgrade my CPU, as I am aware that FSX is a heavily CPU reliant game. So my main questions are, would it be worth upgrading my stock i5-2500 to a factory unlocked i5 with the intention of overclocking to about 4.6ghz, and which i5 is best? I do not really want to spend the extra money on an i7, as I don't use any programs that need hyperthreading and don't usually have a lot of things open. Right now I was looking at a 3570k, wh…

I have a new install of Windows 8 on an SSD, where I have created a partition on the drive for the OS. I also have a second partition of the SSD that I am using for FSX. I started out with creating equal partitions of 60GB, but now realize that I will be needing more capacity in the FSX partition. I realize I can reduce the size of the partition that the OS resides on (I would use Disk Manager in the OS to do this). But if I also want to increase the FSX partition to use the space freed up by the reduction in the OS partition, how does that work? Would I need to format the newly increased FSX partition- as I assume that would blow away my FSX files that I have alr…

I'm experiencing very bad sound stutters & puses when flying in FSX & other sims like FC2 etc. They last for 1-3 sec & are very severe when landing & you hear the RA call-outs 30, 20, 10....makes smooth landings impossible, but they also are present at altitude. They are worst when flying an heavy addon like PMDG NGX w Fs2crew & Coolsky DC-9. The thing is when I press Q & mute the sound the stutters are gone & everything is smooth. It started 3 weeks ago since then I have done: -an complete computer system reinstall with fresh FSX install. -updated all drivers, added newest Realtek HD Audio driver from their's site. -tried different Nvida …
