Hello, I was wondering how long the race usually lasts. On the 21st of February, I am returning from abroad, but I am completely free on the 22nd. Can I still participate? If not, please ignore my application in the application thread.

The thirteenth annual FS Round the World Race is scheduled to start on Saturday, February 21, 2015. In this event, pilots fly for teams who run a baton race around the globe in real time and real weather. All pilots are invited to participate. For details, you can go to the official FS Round the World Race website. And for an introduction to how the event works, you might visit the Introduction to the Round the World Race. If you are interested, you can join up with one of the teams: the event is a challenge and all teams need pilots. You can go directly to the "Race Forum" for each of the participating teams. At the team forums, you should find a thread that welcomes…

PNG Tour #4 Port Moresby, Emo Mission, & Kokoda Track Bush Strips The main event will start with a flight from Jacksons International Airport to the remote bush strip at Emo Mission across the Owen Stanley Range before proceeding to Kokoda. We will be transporting supplies to Emo Mission and tourist trekkers who want to hike the Kokoda track. For this leg I recommend a transport aircraft capable of carrying passengers/cargo and landing on the dirt strip at Emo Mission and Kokoda such as the DHC6 Twin Otter, Cessna Caravan, or other similar aircraft. At Kokoda we will transition into aircraft suitable for delivery supplies and mail to the short, stee…

...You don't! But there are some things that may help. 1: Give yourself a close haircut. About 1/8" should do it. This prevents you from pulling out what is left of one's hair. 2: Do not reinstall windows and then... 3: Install FSX immediately afterwards. Give it a week....at least! I have spent the last week doing all of the above. I fondly thought that transferring stuff over from my old HDD to my spinky new Samsung 850 EVO 1Tb SSD would be a breeze. WRONG! At some points I had so many windows open I was pasting things back into where they came from (overwrite=1) then wondering, for at least 15 minutes, why nothing had changed. On top of that Windows kept dragg…

During a recent conversations on TS about the race and the aircraft white list, I bought myself the Lionheart Epic LT and downloaded the freeware de Haviland Hornet. As I've mentioned elsewhere, the Epic is an interesting exercise in getting used to glass cockpits and I'm shocked to find I quite like them! Whatever next?! As for the Hornet....Jeeezz, can that thing go! I'm beginning to get my head around short, steep approaches. Any other recommendations? (not the Sabre) Looking forward to February.

PNG Tour #3 – The Black Cat Track, Mountain Villages, and Port Moresby Departing from Nadzab (AYNZ) [Orbx], we fly over Lae and Salamaua before turning inwards over the Black Cat Track to Bulolo (BUO) [PIS], a flight which recalls the original impetus for local aviation to serve the 1926-1942 gold rush near Bulolo and Wau. We climb and proceed to the valley grass strip at Garaina (GNA) [FSX]. Then up over the mountains to the wonderfully challenging mountain airfields Tapini (TAP) [PIS-only], Fane (FANE) [PIS-only], and Woitape (WTP) [PIS]. This dramatic sequence is followed by Ononge (ONG) [PIS-only] which might prove interesting. Finally, the route drops down to sea …

PNG Tour #2 – The Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea We start in contemporary Madang (AYMD) [PIS&FSX]. Madang is an "expat" town with a relatively pleasant life style. Then to Tauta Village (TAU) which is a small hilltop airstrip [PIS-only] near Shaggy Ridge of the Finisterre Range. (Non-PIS pilots might fly down to the Ramu Valley grass strip at Gusap (GSP) to check out the magistrate's office.) The next two airports, Goroka (AYGA) and Kundiawa (AYCH) serve important towns with decently interesting Orbx "enhanced" airfields [Orbx]. Kundiawa is the starting point for those wishing to climb Mount Wilhelm (the highest peak in PNG). Rather than walk up, we fly to K…

Good-day, Now that Christmas is upon us, we'll soon be looking at the new-year, and just around the corner, RTW '15.... Time that I compile some thoughts, looking forward to this great event! I hope to get response and feedback from all interested participants. Dear RTW Race Committee, Mike MacKuen, Rob Ibey, and Ed Keller; Let's make 2015 the greatest race yet. Let the strategic implementations and thoughts of the committee be those that would form a competitive, and jolly race for all!! 1.) Please, eliminate the bonus bank! Penalties are ok. But we don't need to earn extra credit, or bonus time. Let's race.. winner takes all. 2.) Please, let's not requi…

PNG Tour #1 - Rabaul to Long Island Since the first leg of this tour starts at Rabaul which was a strategic stronghold of the Japanese military in World War II, participants are encouraged to fly an appropriate period aircraft. The PNG tour starts at Tokua (AYTK) on the opposite side of the Rabaul caldera. After taking off turn towards the first waypoint which is the location of the destroyed town of Rabaul passing the active volcano Tavurvur and another nearby volcano, Vulcan. Casual Flights moving to Papua New Guinea (PNG) To celebrate the arrival of the winter solstice Saturday group flight operations are moving south of the Equator. By participant consensus, the next four to five flights will be in Papua New Guinea and will feature flights into remote airstrips located on beautiful coral beaches and into primitive clearings in the rugged highlands. The planned routes will feature relaxed and easy flying interrupted by white knuckle approaches into dangerous airstrips. There will be ample opportunities for the participating pilots to impress their fellow pilots with their daring and skill or just provide general entertainment. …

Iceland Tour, Part 3: Isafjordur to Keflavik This week's join-the-dots.... oops, I mean carefully thought-out flight plan.... will complete our circumnavigation of Iceland, finishing at the international airport at Keflavik from where we can all fly our 777s home (optional!). Departing where we left off at Isafjordur (BIIS), we will work our way south through the scenic Westfjords region, with stops at Thingeyri (BITE), Bildudalur (BIBD) and Patreksfjordur (BIPA) before we cross the bay to Rif (BIRF) on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. When we leave Rif we fly south to make a circuit of the Snaefellsjokull glacier-capped volcano, the setting for Jules Verne's novel Jo…

Nick has asked me to advance the Palm Springs Tour by one week, he will take us back to Iceland after we've had a chance to warm up in California. This tour starts and finishes at Palm Springs KPSP and features Jarrad Marshall’s dramatically scenic rendition of this desert oasis. Departing from Palm Springs International we head 7nm (HDG 305) then turn west (HDG 259) for a full stop landing at Banning Municipal Airport KBNG. From Banning we will depart to the east (12nm) making for waypoint WHETO before turning north (HDG 315) for the climb over the high mountains of the San Gorgonio Wilderness on our way to Big Bear City Airport L35. The field elev…

Hi guys, I don't know if you already cooked up a plan for this Saturday, but if not I could put up Part 2 of the Iceland Tour. The plan is already done but I'm still away so I won't be able to post it till Friday when I get back home. Part 2 will be rather more leisurely than Part 1; it will consist of a tour of the airfields of the Westfjords region, including landing at the (in)famous Isafjordur airport (there are some good youtube videos, I'll dig out some links). If there's already a plan then no problem, this will keep till we need one.

I've done 'join the dots' tour of Yosemite National Park for Saturday. Yes we are still open for business. When we've finished that we could all (?) go and gawp at Palm Springs as there is lots to see. I'll put the flight plan up later as I can't be arsed at the moment, it's late and the wine is stepping up to the plate.
