September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

    Let's do a community test. Please try this and report if it makes a difference:1) make a back-up of the fly.ini file (path: FlyII>System) if you haven't already done so.2) open the fly.ini file with a text editor3) find the section that starts with {UI} (it's really in angle brackets but this site thinks they're html shortcuts)4) toward the bottom of the section is the line:searchPodFilesFirst=1Change the 1 to 0 if it's not already.5) save the changes in fly.ini and launch FlyIII'd be interested to hear if the patch failed when the line was already set to 0.I was answering another post regarding fly.ini edits and noted that the patch.pod file has a generic icon like ad…

    Does anyone know if there is a site that gives a little briefing into the inner workings of Fly2 aircraft design? Specifically, I am looking into tweaking an aircraft's ground handling capabilities. I know that I have to adjust settings like "damping ratio" in the WHL file, but its just different enough from Fly2k that I feel a bit lost.Thanks---John R. Hey guys, I've got TS2 up and running, both in OSX and on VPC but I need textures. I cannot find a copy of the PC version of Fly!2 anywhere, and the old links to the original TS2 texture packages seem to be missing. Also I cannot find fly2slice if I were to find a PC version of Fly!2 I still would not be able to create any scenery. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'll also post this in the Devlopers fourm. Keep 'em Flyin'Jesse

    It's been announced that Mac gaming publisher and developer Destineer has acquired MacSoft, the company that published Fly! II on the Mac. At one point (about a year ago), Destineer had said that they were considering porting MSFS to the Mac. I haven't heard anything since, but this may start something.-Franklin------------------------------Franklin TesslerDP 800Fly! for Mac Co-moderator

    Hello all! I have been away quite a while, mainly because I did not have Fly! 2 and was not really doing that much with Fly! anymore, but I finally managed to scrape together some money and finally bought a copy of Fly!2 while I was at the Apple Store in the M.O.A. this evening. I figured it would probably be worthwhile since the patch was released a few weeks ago. I bought it even though I was not expecting much preformance out of my 700Mhz iBook, under 10.2.3. Boy was I wrong! Dispite the graphics being a little on the rough side the simulation was as smooth as silk! Running in 800X600 I was getting about 15-20fps with normal scenery around IAD. I still haven't l…

    For those who don't surf the main forum very often, there is a recent post that shows how to rid your personal space of that loud ping when the GPS fires up. I tried it and it works for Macs, too.:-yellow1The link takes you to the RealSimulations site for a little .wav file that makes a MUCH more tasteful and discreet GPS tone. Just drop the .wav in your Sounds folder in the Fly! folder. You need to find the line in the fly.ini file that reads searchPodFilesFirst=1 and change the 1 to 0 before it will work. Most of us have already done so to use add-on scenery.This is the thread:http://ftp.avsim.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboa...rum=DCForumID14 Am I glad that old tone is gone! …

    Hi everyone, I had a question that just about everyone will have an opinion on i'm sure.I live in two locations, at my (not primary) residence I have a pentium machine running Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 and I love it. I practice navigation all the time with it. At my primary residence I have a G4, and HATE X-Plane with a passion :) I am very intrested in Fly! II. Would you say that it is similar in quality as MSFS2002? What do I mean by quality? Well, MSFS2002 has full navigational support, every airport in the country and most around the world, nice looking scenery, interactive ATC and great flight models (for external views, etc.) All the screenshots and informati…

    Hi, been awhile since I have posted. Still enjoying Fly 2K on a regular basis. I just installed a Radeon 7000 PCI card and a 500mhz G4 and get some nice results. Frame rates increased a bit, much smother on final approach, flying the How In The World Grand canyon scenery, and my Terrascene Colorado that I made.Anyone running Fly 2 with the final patch on similar setup? Like to hear your results.

    Hi all - not really a newbie, I guess (previously I posted the report on Fly! 2 on Jaguar), I've just been out of the loop for a long while. I've been hooked on X-Plane 6, which I love (the ability to easily design planes and fly on Mars is really cool), but I've also been longing to get back into Fly! 2 lately. I'm installing it again (ever so slowly) and will be installing the final patch. So...what are the recommended tweaks & tips for best performance? I'm running a Power Mac G4 "Digital Audio" single-processor 533 mhz w/ 133 mhz system bus, 384 MB RAM, GeForce 2 MX, Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold USB joystick, Mac OS X v. 10.2.3. Hello,I've been lurking for a year but now it is with great pride that I post here for the first time!Before the 240 patch, I used to be able to correct the throttle span of my Wingman joystick slider from an irritating 25%-75% of Throttle to 0-100% by tweaking values in the Control.txt file in the Fly folder. This was not perfect as Fly!II regularly stomped my values but it did the job.Now with the new patch, the values I enter in Control.txt are just ignored. Has any of you figured out how to fix once for all this slider issue? Is it only occuring with the Wingman joystick?Thanks a lot for any help!

    Dear friends,There is an anchored post at the very top of the main Fly! forum. It's an e-mail from Tara, Richard's wife, updating the Fly! community on his struggles. After you read it, I think you'll agree that Rich isn't the only one in that family who's strong. How hard it must be for Tara to provide us with these updates.It sounds like Rich has run out of medical options. If you are so inclined, and I hope you are, please remember Richard and his family in your prayer intentions. Richard is a man of faith, and it's time for other men of faith to stand by him and his family in whatever way we can.Peace be with you,

    I decided that I should make another attempt in creating scenery.I can get Terrascene to work on my TiBook, but I still need to slice with fly2slice.exe, which is not available on the Mac.So I needed the simulator for Windows. After a little struggle with the beast (I haven't used Windows for a while), I managed to get Fly!2, from my Mac install disk, to work also on Windows. :-kewl (If anyone is interested, it is not that hard to achieve)It would have been simpler to go buy a PC copy, but less fun. Now Fly!2 works on Windows, and I got fly2slice.exe from the patch, but somehow it fails at start up with a "The Program has requested Microsoft Visual C++ to terminate" of so…

    Guys;As I was taking a trip down memory lane, I decided to re-partition my hard drive and add a part for classc... Consequentially, I found myself installing Fly! 2k again. Boy, is that a good sim.Anyway, as I updated my scenery again, I remembered that the Fly1 Ontario scenery needed a patch to be able to use it. As I looked through the AVSIM file library, I wasn't able to find it.Does anybody out there know where I could find it, or perhaps email it to me? Thanks a lot;

    I don't know if any of you have had a chance to download this very excellent repaint yet, but I'm having a rather strange problem. This 172 is bouncing from front to rear while on the ground in external view. It's especially noticeable during run-up and taxing from within the cockpit view. Just wanted to confirm this with another Mac user to see if some ad-on I have may be causing this.
