FLY for Mac Users Forum
If you are a Macintosh owner and use FLY, then this is the forum for you!
Lake Tahoe September, 2002 |
This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

Looks like I'm a little late to the party, but hopefully there are still some veterans who can help a newbie into the game quickly. I bought Fly! II nearly a year ago, but due to system limitations haven't been able to run it. However, I've just put in a G4 1.4ghz upgrade, upgraded video card, and gone to ebay to get CH Yoke LE and Pedals. So I was all set to go. Imagine my disappointment to find the controllers unrecognized and no help in the manuals. In looking here I've learnt OS X seems to be a big problem. However, I am a confirmed OS X (Panther now) user and would rather not reboot into OS9. (I did that for the first time in nearly a year last night and immdi…

A recent thread in the General Fly! forum asked for a virtual show of hands. Activity here has been quite low for months, so I'd like to do the same for the Mac forum. In your response, please indicate:1. How often you visit this forum2. How often you use Fly!3. Which version you use (2k or II)4. If you use any other flight sim(s)Thanks.-Franklin------------------------------Franklin TesslerDP 800Fly! for Mac Co-moderator

Hi there,I use Fly 2K and jsut got a Sawtooth G4 500 with an AGP Radeon 8500 graphics card. The machine is nice, but I can not get Fly! 2K to recognize my Radeon 8500. My only graphics schoice is software only.On my old B&W G3 running a 550 Mhz G4 upgrade card, I was getting decent frame rates using a flashed Radeon 7000 PCI 64MB Graphics card and the Radeon VCF File from the files library area.I never purchased Fly 2 because I did not have the hardware to run it, and was pretty happy with the V.88 flught models in Fly! 2K. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello all!Just wanted to post this news about a new aircraft for Fly II made on Mac (although I need a little help from school PeeCees for 3ds Max conversion to s3d. The plane is the Sud Aviation SE-210 Caravelle with planned paints of SwissAir and Iberia, perhaps more If you want i'll take a few requests via this message board. I'm doing the Caravelle III version which has strangely shaped turbines. planned features are:

I bought X-Plane.The price is supposed to go up soon, so I took the $60 plunge. It arrived Monday so I'm just scratching the surface, getting the settings right, setting up the joystick, etc. Therefore I really can't comment about much, other than to say it runs smoothly on the old Beige Beast. I had to tone down the default graphics setting because it wanted 41MB of my 32MB of VRAM :). There MUST be some way to make this thing show frame rates. So far, FlyII still has XP beat for cockpit and external views. However, the panels are not nearly so "flat" looking as in earlier versions. I have four CDs of compressed scenery files I've yet to install. They cover the entire wo…

Hello all,I've posted this at the Fly General Discussion but since I'm using a Mac for this I have to ask here...Question:Has anybody had a problem with searchPodFilesFirst=0 at all? I had no problems with Fly 1 but all of a sudden I cant seem to get this...I was the creator of the poorly done created on a Mac plane Caravelle I wanted to get a good one going for Fly II. My main problem is, when I follow J Sebatiers tutorial to build an aircraft, I can't seem to get the aircraft to show up in the "select aircraft" dialog box! Its strange!Help is very much appreciated!Romanjomar111

It's been very quiet around here lately; in fact, it's been a long time since my last post.As most of you know, Mac Fly! II has always lagged behind the Wintel version. Even top-end Macs with the best available video cards couldn't come close to PC performance, in part because of slower hardware subsystems on the Mac side. In my case, Fly!'s borderline performance under OS X has kept me from using it much. (I know that I could do far better with OS 9, but something in my OS 9 installation has caused Fly! to become very unstable on my Mac, and I literally never boot into OS 9 anymore.)I'm convinced that's about to change tomorrow, when Apple announces 970-based PowerMacs. …

I have been flying fly 2 on my imac for 2 years and I am getting a liitle bored. When I have more than 10 aircraft, the system slows way down. I have been looking for a way to participate in the virtual air traffic sims, but they are all set up for FS and windows machines. Are there any vat's out there for the mac user?

I am unable to show the menu bar in Fly!II on my father's iMac. Fresh install of all 3 CD's, the program opens fine but there is no menu bar at the top of the screen, pressing the space bar does absolutely nothing. The other keys work (much the same as in the PC version which I have on my home computer). I originally installed the CD's and then patched to latest version 250.240, later uninstalled everything and tried a fresh install of the CD version... still no menu bar. I tried getting into the fly.ini to add the allowHiddenMenubar=1, this file opens with textedit1.1 but when I go to close or save am told to rename because I cannot save with the *.ini extension. I …

Hi there,It has been a long while since I have posted here. Been happily buzzing away on my B&W G3 in Fly 2k For years. However, I recently flashed a PCI 64MB Radeon Card, and for the life of me I can not remember what to change in my VCF FIle to get better performance.I am currently using the VCF for the 32MB Radeon, and get @!fps over terrascened from inside the cockpit with all scenery on min 15 miles visibility, and get 60 fps with no panel, and 40 to 60 in exterior views of the C-172v88 - Looks good.Anyways, I love this program. Never felt I had the hardware to try and run Fly 2. Rich's spirit is alive here. Thanks

I'm still using Fly2k pending funding allocation for new computer. (Shed no tears for me; I'll pull through.)Question 1: DBImport has suddenly stopped "seeing" DEX files I've downloaded. This is baffling and exasperating. Any ideas?Question 2: Are FlyII aircraft "retro-patchable" to work in Fly2k?Thanks.

Hello all,I tested Fly! II on 10.3 (Panther, to be released) this week end on a dual 1GHz G4 and it is running fine. It seems somewhat faster than running on Jaguar. With minimal sceneries I get frame rates of about 20 now. I can't remember what I got on Jaguar on the same machine but it did not feel as good. This is my work machine and I rarely Fly! from there. It is definitely smoother than on my titanium powerbook 800MHz. If I get my hands on a G5 I will try it too.Regarding the TBM700 and the P51s not running on MacOSX, Patrick Martin showed me how to 'fix' them by editing the AMP file for each aircraft. Remove all references to subsystems coming from the missing or u…

Anyone who heard about FS2004 for Mac. There were rumours of such a version.I've been out of the forum for a while. Hi again, friends!

After a long search, I scored an original (not 7000) Radeon Mac edition for my Beige G3. I can now set the visuals higher and get the same rates, or leave the visuals as they were and see some rate improvement.Does anyone have a "sweet" render.ini number set that rocks on a 32MB Radeon? I don't think I'm close to using all the texture slots. The ATI control panel showed I was using about 18MB in a farly complex area.I tried renaming the render.ini file and letting FlyII write a new one when it detected the Radeon. No joy. The new file had only the last two entries of a "normal" file, and I had blue fog no matter how I set the visibility sliders. Even the aircraft shadows …

Hello to all,I downloaded and installed the Mac. version of the Socata TBM 700 this morning. The aircraft opens just fine in OS 9.2.2, but when I open it in OS 10 .1.2 I get the following message"Subsystem is not registered (tbml)". Searching the sim archives I found post #912 1/1/03 from Joel with the same problem and a reply by Francois Jouaux 1/11/03 that he also had the same problem. On 1/11/03 Post # 921, Joel replied that he was waiting for an answer from the ROTW team. Was the answer/correction to this problem ever received?I have the 240 patch installed, searchpodFilesFirst set to0 and have not had any other problems with ROTW aircraft.Thank you,Mike
