September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

Well, not a total beginner...I used Fly2K for years on my old iMac. Just got Fly!II via eBay for my 12" Powerbook G4. Applied the patch. Loads fine, no obvious problems but hard to tell what will be what while I only have 256 RAM. While I await arrival of maximum RAM, I have been setting up Fly! and have a few questions now - more later.(1) Menubar won't disappear. I tried the fix detailed on this Forum: Went into System>fly.ini>{UI}>added "allowHiddenMenubar=1" at the end of that section. Now what I get is, the space bar toggles me between a fully functional Fly! screen with the menubar and a totally black screen on which nothing appears. Tried it seve…

Hi all,Last weekend I took the plunge and installed 10.2.3 on the Beige G3. I'm posting tis in Safari Pretty slick OS! I expected sluggish performance from the system visuals, but they run as smothly on the Beige as on daughter's eMac G4/700. Must be the Radeon.I tried launching Fly II from two different insallations, one a heavily loaded and tweaked 216 and the other a rather clean install with the full patch. Both errored and would not start. I think the system log message is telling me that FlyII is looking for a USB joystick. I now have one but haven't installed it because the firm forgot to pack the USB adapter. Will try when I get the part. Both Fly installations are…

Hi Allan FlyII has been working great with the 240 patch up until today. I went to start it up but it froze on the Loading Screen even after a couple of restarts. So I thought "not a big deal I'll just reinstall the whole thing from the boxed version 210 and update it with the 240 patch just as I had done before when the patch was released". No Problem I thought. After the install and update I tried to start FlyII again but this time the splash screen didn't even come up. Instead an error box with a red hand appeared saying "Unable to open pod file startup/system.pod".I thought it was my system so I threw out the system Prefs and some other prefs but no joy. I've tried f…

Thinking about plunging back into Fly after an interlude with x-plane. What's the status of Fly! II for Mac users? Is it available? can it be used with OSX? (My last adventures with Fly! were with Fly!2 and system 9 some time ago. These questions are probably old & stale for this group, and I apologize in advance.Thanks. Tom

Hi All,I finally got hold of a copy of FLY!2. I installed it and right away downloaded the PA28 and the PA19 from the SiMVOL site. All the other planes I downloaded from here and there all worked really well. The PA28 and PA19 both don't however. I get in the choose aircraft box a picture of the FLY hawk and PA19.nfo. I try to load it and FLY2 crashes. Has anyone else witnessed this problem??Patrick Martin

I'm having trouble using the calibrator in 10.2. It will not launch without a forced quit.I tried to use the 'Calibrator II' that came with 4x4 Evolution 2, but it doesn't calibrate the Logitech joystick for Fly!, only for 4x4 Evo. So I'm trying to fly the Bell 407 without full controls, which is quite impossible :).

There are wonderful walk throughs by Ken Salter for Fly!II in the PC version. I have used these guides to set up Fly!II on my PC but my father has an iMac and has purchased Fly!II for it, he also got the CH usb yoke and pedals. I am going to help set his system up and was wondering if some of the files suggested by Mr. Salter would work or have Mac versions... for example, Jures cloud sets, the sky color files, vfr ocean, FSBuild, InfoMetar, Autoweather. Anyone who has already set up Fly!II on a Mac and would be willing to share I would really appreciate the help. I have taken the better part of a month getting my PC to where it is now and would like to leave my Dad f…

Yea, I know this is a Fly! forum, but it's also the ultimate source for Mac simming wisdom--thus the question.Has anyone downloaded the X-Plane 7.00 Mac demo? I installed the new version to see how it was with my new Radeon and 19" monitor (monitor size being the critical issue with reading X-Plane menus). The installation went fine but, when I launch X-Plane, it gets part-way into the loading sequence and then does a QTD with a Type 3 error (illegal instruction, as I recall). Everything else on the computer is running fine. The PlaneBuilder utility launches fine. The only "cheat" I'm doing revolves around the Oct 2002 ATI Drivers. I needed them for one of my son's games, …

After corresponding with Wayne Roberts, it turned out that all my problems were caused by that loose nut in front of the keyboard--me.I had failed to properly install the file MOVINGVEHICLES.POD in the right spot. It's available by searching the library for dynmodels.zip.The bottom line is that NO conversions are needed to use Wayne's fine airports on the Mac. It a matter of "RTFI," for "read the __ instructions. Review the readme file that Wayne provides with all his scenery packages and make sure you have the required model files from other developers (like BIBERALL, dynmodels, and TM21) that he calls out. All are available in the AVSIM library. Thanks to Wayne for his c…

Has anyone had any luck getting these to work on the Mac, with or without the dynamics? I've used lots of Wayne's scenery before he added the dynamic bits. However, the packages that have dynamic vehicles seem to be Mac-unfriendly whether I enable the paths or not.I'm getting an error measage; however, the entire text block is black and unreadable. Gonna be hard to diagnose this way!Any tips would be appreciated. If we are all having problems, I'll contact Wayne to see if he has workabouts.

OK....would anyone out there be willing to give me some advice on installing this program so it will work on my system. I have installed from the CD several times and applied the patch. Something about a startup pod file is missing. Surely I cannot have the only dual processor Mac with this issue.
