Richard Harvey

Lake Tahoe

September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

I've seen the new rules banning sim comparison's etc. & can agree at least half way. Afterall, I've pushed them to the limits myself, trying not to go over the edge! :)But having to lock the thread titled "Fly! 2 - Slow By Design :-(", because it's the new rules seems to go to far! Just when it get's interesting............. it's locked! Besides, I did want to mention that even my Athlon 1900XP get's bogged down in FLYII, when facing airports with buildings. Turn the aircraft & it's fluid. Look towards buildings & the fps drop dramatically. I can even run another "sim" with the internet & just about everything else running in the background with no noticea…

With all of the talk that almost always is spread here about Fly's death (even though Richard has always responded with comments to the opposite), I thought it could possibly be fun, and more importantly, open up new ideas, to discuss alternative ways of getting a new Fly3 out the door. Obviously, the trouble appears to lie in the form of TRI needing a new publisher (correct me if I'm wrong). May be Rich can respond with how much up front cash is actually needed for an endeavor such as this. Now to start with, the original concept of G.O.D. was very admirable. Let the developers ban together to publish thier titles. No more will they be working under unworkable time tables…

I just bought Fly! 2. The graphics at times are stunning, though they fall short of offering an immersive experience, due to the lack of detail. Cities like Chicago seem to have vanished from the previous version? Airports look deserted and half done. What really bothers me though is the lack of fluidity. I have a powerful computer with a Geforce4 graphics board. I get a frame rate above 18 fps all of the time in FS2002 with everything maxed, over non populated areas as high as in the mid 30s. Fly! 2 crawls, there is no comparison, this program has a problem somewhere. This code is far from optimized. With scenery as undense and unsophisticated as is delivered it should be…

  11. I took the dive and purchased a GF4 Ti4600 yesterday. Its in the mail, but when I install it, I'll have my GF3 Ti200 available. I bought it in October, so its got six months wear-and-tear on it. Good card, but I want the extra power.I considered putting it up for sale on eBay, but preferred to offer it to my Fly "friends". If you're interested in the video card, please send me an email. I guess I'll take the highest bidder between now and next Monday 5/13. Based on market price, I'd like to ask for a minimum $50 bid. I'll post a note to this thread when the sale is over, just to let everyone know.NOTE: I am selling this card "as is" with no manuals or drivers. You'll have…

Got my new VisionTek XTasy GF4 4600 today. Very excited. I pulled out my Ti200 and put in the Ti4600, made sure to uninstall and then totally re-install the Nvidia 28.83 drivers, setup the desktop, and then added some extra slots to my slow RENDER.ini file. When I launched Fly, I got the famous SVertex Index... error. From prior posts, I gather that indicates I exceeded the amount of video memory available.I ran AGPMem.exe to see what's going on and got a report as noted in the attached picture below...http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3cd9dc8f6577331c.jpgI also checked the display settings, and all appears to be in order...http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/User_files/3c…

I know this has been discussed a zillion of times, but it seems that this is an area where there are too many options for making mistakes or not understanding what the exact process is. I use FSDS to make my 3D models. After mapping the textures to my model I export it to Fly II format. What I do then is loading the TGA file generated by FSDS and apply my alpha channels to get my transparency. As there are several area

My favorite part about FlyII is the realistic feel I get sitting in the cockpit. The panels are beautiful...everything works and is where it should be. Anyone Fly! II simmer knows this well. My primary use for the sim is to fly GA aircraft that I actually might be able to fly in real life. I dream of getting my pilot's license and in the meantime use Fly! II to practice and enjoy the thrill of flying (at least in a virtual world). For that reason, I don't usually fly the heavies because I am obviously not qualified to fly that kind of aircraft in the real world. Although thats one of the wonderful uses of a simulator...to do in the virtual world what you could neve…

I am beginning to simpathize with many folks who give up on FLY2. I lost my joystick control, and now I can't seem to get it to work again. It seems to work fine in the Win98, but in FLY2 it simply doesn't work. I've had FLY2 since day one and never had a problem. Now, I feel like a newbie: I simply don't know what else to do. Can somebody point in some direction, other than reinstall the program? Again, I want to emphasize the fact that I am VERY computer savy, yet I am stuck with this. I have the yoke, chthrottle pro and the rudder setup. The throttle is the only thing that FLY recognizes. The control panel in FLY has the three axis identified, but when I erase them, mo…

Posts regarding a Patch (for MSFS2K2), and This Sim versus that Sim will, from today forward, be automatically removed (not locked, but removed entirely) by the moderators when they are encountered. We are getting real tired of the constant degeneration of these threads into flaming matches (and seemingly always by the same minority), and we will now pre-emptively shut down any thread that broaches either of these two subjects. They have been beat to death, and if you want to review the number of times this horse has died, simply do a search in the archives. They have become a tremendous waste of our bandwidth and our time, and this is not going to continue. http://ftp.av…

Hi All,Well, my first Terrascene project worked like a charm. It was a big one. I made a Complete 50 mile radius around my home airport Joliet, Illinois. This includes Chicago, Northern Indiana, and most of the way out towards Iowa. It took 40 hours to render, but Pascal pointed out I need to read the optimization chapter.. :-)The Pod file it created is 860mb large. Think I should upload it.. :-lol :-lolEvery Lake, river, road, interchange, even the little lake by my house was rendered perfectly and TS 2.1 worked like a charm. My FPS at 3.2 zoom is between 11-14, but I need to reallocate some 128 slots, and I should be able to improve on that quite a bit. Thanks To…

Hello, last night I finished my project to build all taxiways included with Jeppesen SimCharts for germany. I put them together in a pod file and placed the pod file in the taxiways folder within the Fly! II folder. The problem now is, that for airports with original taxiways (those are included in the taxiways pod what comes with Fly! II), my taxiways are not loaded and don't show up in Fly! II. My taxiways show up only, if the taxiway files are located in the data folder and are not in a pod file. Since I combine the taxiways with airport scenery (airport signs, some buildings, etc.), I can't use the original ones, if my taxiways differs from the original ones.To make ins…

Without any warning, I exited FLY2 and went to bed. This morning , when I tried to restart it, the screen would go black and the computer would then have to be reset. I unistalled it and installed it. The screen simply comes up black. I've tried other programs, and they all seem to be working ok. I have not changed drivers or anything else. Any ideas? I am really puzzled, considering that I've had FLY2 for many months running beautifully, and the occasional problems would show up after the splash screen. tony
