Richard Harvey

Lake Tahoe

September, 2002

This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.

At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.

Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"

Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."

We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums!

I'm wanting to get into FLY!II aircraft and panel development. It appears to me that most of the good ones we see are done using Photoshop and 3D studio. The cost of these programs are outragous, geared toward commercial use.Photoshop 7.0 =$605 retail3D studio = $3,300 retailI might be able to get photoshop (educational version) for $200. Not sure if 3D studio has an educational version out there.Would anybody make any suggestions on obtaining such software or an alternative? I have looked at ebay, yet auctioning can get expensive too. Is there anybody or anyplace that sells older (several years old) versions of such software or any other software alternatives?Any advice …

When starting up Fly! II with the Socata TBM 700 as the start-up aircraft, I noticed that the readings of the VOR/ILS 2 gauge are mirrored around the 0-180 axis. E.g., when you expect 60 you see 300 degrees. This does not happen when I start up Fly! II in the Skyhawk and then transfer to the Socata. In the past I discovered the same anomaly when starting up in the Pilatus PC-12. The cure was the same: just starting up in the Skyhawk first makes the problems disappear.Cheers,Henri

A few days ago I downloaded this and I have to say she is a beaut! I will never fly another single in Fly2 :) Great job ROTW!! I have one small favor to ask. The Nav Sensor button located on the left hand side of the pilot's HSI causes a crash to desktop everytime I click on it. I am using Win XP and the readme states there would be problems with XP using some of the HSI buttons. Is it possible to add a NAV/GPS found on the original a/c for us XP'ers? Any info/help would be appreciated! Robert

On some of the shots of aircraft taken either at dawn or at sundown, there is soft, red lighting reflected off the fuse. Is there a special sky used to get this effect? I don't see it in the views I get at dawn or sundown, so I'am thinking there is either a ini setting to change or a different sky to use. I've gleaned through the websites, the formums, and the downloads and can't find anything that addresses this. I have tried multiple drivers, and DXDiag says everything is fine...literally all other games work fine including MSFS's most resent version. What happens if I use the Directx 8 or 8T&L I get flashing textures on the sceneary all over the place. I regular light show...plane even tears some if I rotate the external view. If I set it to Directx 7 everthing runs fine. Would sure like to get this puppy working on the DX8 settingsAthlon 1.33mhz512mb memorySB LiveRadeon 8500 with 64mb ram videoThanks for any suggestions!Jim Carter

I figured I'd try here since I've had no luck elsewheres. Project Frankenstein will no longer shutdown through XP's shutdown menu item.I've checked the bios under the power mangement options and no matter what I select, I cannot shutdown the box without using the front button. Now, whenever the system goes into suspend mode, I have to do a shutdown with the button to restart the system. I've checked within XP's control panels to see if I've enabled any wake on activity commands but find nothing. My next step is to reset the bios to default and reinstall XP. At some point everything changed for the worse, because prior to this, Frankenstein was running like a champ.Oh…

After months of tweaking RENDER.ini and Fly.ini, I'm still very frustrated with my framerates. I'm absolutely amazed I'm having trouble given my system spex (below). Any last minute advice? I hate to drop $399 for a GF4 4600, when I just bought the setup below in the Fall. But I am so frustrated flying around areas with lots of TM buildings (eg; NYC in particular) that I'm about to throw in the towel.I'm uploading my FLY.ini and RENDER.ini, hoping someone can comment.-DK----Fly! This one had me laughing for a while.Pilots flying heavy iron are sometimes known for their lighthearted jibes at pilots of smaller aircraft. One day at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, an A-340 was in linefor departure behind a Fokker F-28, an aircraft that has a tail that splits to act as a large speedbrake. The Airbus captain was heard on the radio, making some comment about the "cute little plane" in front of him and boasting about the brand new jumbo he was flying. In response, the Fokker's fuselage speed brakes opened wide, and overthe radio a very loud, "Pbbbbbbbt!" was heard."I do believe we've been mooned!" said the A-340 first officer to hisCaptain. Take c…

I'm still seeing the sky blue, flat water in FlyII and would like to make an improvement (a darker blue, some kind of animation, etc). I believe I've done my due diligence in searching on AVSIM forums and file libraries for a solution, so I thought I'd ask...where can I find resources/tips/downloads to make my water look more realistic? I've tried the "more realistic ocean animations" downloads in the scenery forum, but notice no change.Could my flat, sky-blue water have something to do with my graphics settings? (I'm limited by the fact that my GeForce2 GTS has only 32MB of ram)Should I be looking for a download, configuring Fly settings or changing a configuration fi…

Good evening fellow FLY!II simmers!!I am in the process of completing the downloads neccessary for high detailed terrascene 2 scenery for the ENTIRE Pacific Northwest (Washington and Oregon). So far I have downloaded 1.3Gig of files required for Terrascene. This download process has been monumental, esspecially on a 56k dial-up network. Is anybody interested in me uploading this scenery once completed. I'm not sure how long it will take to render. Hopefully, it will not take as long as the downloading process. The final scenery size is going to be very large. How large, I have no idea. I am approximating a minimum of 300mb. For you lucky DSL users that is a short downloa…
