Unfortunately, 4 people including a child, have died after an R44 helicopter crashed into a radio tower in Houston. In this video, you can see the radio tower's strobe light flashing and the helicopter hitting the tower: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/video/2024/oct/21/texas-cctv-captures-moment-helicopter-collides-with-radio-tower-in-fatal-crash-video

I never experienced a storm like the one we got Saturday night. In the four hours between 8:00PM and midnight we got about 6 inches of rain. It set a new record for rainfall in Roswell. It broke the last record set in 1901. It was a constant roar like a train passing by window. We in Peachtree are all OK. We are on higher ground so we don't have flooding. But the house we Betty and I in for 30 years is flooded. I sold it before moving to Peachtree Retirement Village. It might be a while before I can go out and about. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/20/us/new-mexico-flooding-roswell-weather/index.html Noel

I know some will already have seen this little video I made, as I posted it some time ago. However, as I think everyone likes a good mystery, I thought I'd post it here again. But please guys, don't tell me I'd been drinking, or they were shooting stars, or that it was a plane coming into land! I hope you enjoy my tale...

Hi fellow aviation lovers, This afternoon I was driving through my town and saw a most unusual GA aviaition aircraft buzzing around and I though maybe you can help me identify it. It had a design that reminded me of the Piaggio P.180 Avanti. But with some differences. It had the same small wings in front like the P.180 but it was a single engine prop with a nose mounted propeller. The main wings were mounted at a backwards facing angle, so that the they didn't stick out of the fuselage at 90° but more like 80°. Does anybody have any clue what that could have been?

This near-collision on the runway between a plane taking off and another that was about to cross the runway opens up a discussion about why clearances are given "on different frequencies" that can generate potentially serious accidents. It happened last Oct 11th 2024 at San Diego APT when a Southwest Airlines 737-800, WN-1478 from San Diego, CA to Dallas Love, TX (USA), was cleared to line up with runway 27 for takeoff and hold "from the tower" but "on the ground frequency" a Southwest Airlines 737-700, flight WN-785 from San Diego, CA to Phoenix, AZ (USA), had received taxi clearance to reach the runway holding point but due to the closure of taxiway B between B4 an…

You know I'm old enough to actually remember some of these ads. OMG I really really wanted that submarine, and I actually tried to raise the sea monkeys, but nothing ever appeared in the water. I'd probably like another shot at seeing if I could get those sea monkeys to appear... You know what though? Because of these ads I was raised with squirrel monkeys!

Some years ago I posted here some of the boyhood stories I wrote about my brother Leon and I growing up on the streets of San Francisco. Some of you may remember them. This is the last chapter. Me and Lee and Larkin Street...Epilogue It has been over 7 decades since I left Larkin Street and ventured out into the world to make my own way. My life took lots of twists and turns during it’s journey to where I am now. Enough sorrow and grief to sharpen the good times and loves and joys. I never had a job I didn’t like and never awoke in the morning dreading to go to work. I raised a family and had a wife who stood by me for 60 years until she passed away. …

#Rant on I just have to say and this may be me becoming a Curmudgeonly old man but all of these companies moving their primary manner of support to Discord is incredibly frustrating. I don't like the format, I don't like the constant "chatter" or having to scour through 25 channels on one server, trying to remember which section the post I was interested in was in the mess of messages and having to install an incredibly obtrusive app to get the native Discord experience. Personally, it is just really frustrating for me. Call me crazy but I liked forums... I know some developers talk about how they can respond quicker but how is it quicker to respond to a m…

What, we don't have enough phone threads already? 😄 I've had a land line with the same number in my house for 24 years. My wife and son and his wife have cell phones but I do not. Cell service here is a bit spotty. Great cellular internet. Son and his wife are close enough to use the land line on their own wireless handset. Sunday the land line went down. Today the phone company came out and told us that about 2000 feet of copper cable was stolen. That much copper is worth about $15,000 or so when sold, but it would cost the phone company about $70,000 to repair the damage. There are only 7 houses that are affected. There has been cable stolen from othe…

I was thinking of Tom Allensworth this morning as he was retired Navy and used to post about stories like these, I think he would have found this one to be quite astounding. The HMNZS Manawanui from the New Zealand Navy that is a modern hydrographic ship, and it's primary role is to measure the sea floor, and while measuring the sea floor it hit the sea floor and sank off the coast of Samoa. Everyone survived thankfully, but yea you have one job, and that is to look at the sea floor, and you hit the sea floor while looking at the sea floor 😕 https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/350441671/defence-force-describes-challenging-rescue-manawanui-crew-currents-wind-pushed

I see some crazy stuff for sale on eBay but this is somewhat jaw flexing. You could technically LIVE in your ultimate sim! I'd make it a snooker room with small bar and home theatre. What would YOU do with it? Asking price 30 LARGE (UK slang) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/176560985308

Never flown one of these things and never will. I would undoubtedly just crash and break the thing, but I've always thought they were cool. Building something like this from scratch is next level, though. The skill is amazing, but just as amazing is the sheer patience to deal with that level of detail....

Hello everyone! I've recently been diving into flight simulators and would love to hear some recommendations on the best add-ons to enhance realism in Microsoft Flight Simulator. I'm particularly interested in weather and terrain updates or any new aircraft models that are highly rated by the community. What are your must-have mods or tools to take the sim experience to the next level? Looking forward to your suggestions!
