Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

Over the last half-hour or so we have had two 5 to 8 minutes outages. Those were my fault. I was tweaking some things that should not have brought the system to its knees, but it did. No more of that for the day. Again, my apologies for interrupting your visits.

A Pakistani International Airlines pilot was jailed for 9 months in the UK for being 4 times over the allowable blood alcohol limit while conducting pre-flight checks for a flight from the UK to Pakistan, His excuses were that he was unaware of the UK requirements and that Pakistani requirements merely required a 12 hour gap between drinking and flying no matter how much alcohol the pilot had consumed.

  3. Ok I have a gaming rig that can do just about anything. The problem I have is I use sweetfx to adjust the graphics in Microsoft Flight Simulator X and in windowed mode the graphics are perfect. Exactly what I want my simulator to look like. I use a 3 monitor set up. Here's the problem. When I put this is full screen mode the graphics are the same but the fps makes the game unplayable. When I take out the sweetfx files out of fsx directory the full screen works but graphics are obviously default. How can I make fsx with sweetfx work in full screen mode? I've spent hours and hours on forums but no real answers. Please I know someone out there has the answer. Thanks for the …

A lot of members weighed in on this topic in another thread- and because it was off-topic, I have decided to create a specific thread on the subject. The military is making great use of drones, and of course someone on the ground has to fly the drone, but that person is NOT on the aircraft. Several questions come to mind - and it seems problematic that any government oversight agency is going to cave in on drone ops in a CIVILIAN commercial aircraft anytime soon for a number of reasons. An Avsim member has commented that most commercial crashes are PILOT ERROR, which argues in FAVOR of drone ops. OTOH, I have a hard time envisioning a DRONE PILOT being able to han…

Hello, I'm wondering if someone can tell me why flight numbers have alpha characters after them? For example, in Froogle's FS2Crew for the Airbus Extended X, he says he is BAW276 and if he was flying on ATC he would be BA276G. Where does the "G" come from? I see a lot of NAX flights that have that too when I'm on vatsim. I'm not sure if this is an EU thing only though I don't recall seeing it in the US(at least not that I've noticed there but I haven't been flying in the US much lately). Anyway, I'm just curious as to why those flight numbers are like that and where does one get what those actual flight numbers are? Thanks.

Hey guys Out of curiosity and boredom, I installed a linux security OS on my desktop and setup a fake hotspot with man in the middle with a bunch of password sniffer and sessions hijacker. The result, using my laptop... Well I was able to get 95% of my password on HTTP "Avsim, Amazon, Boursorama, etc... And 80% on secured HTTPS "facebook, Gmail, hotmail, paypal, etc... When I used my Iphone/Ipad the HTTPS result was lower because I was using IOS apps, but the result using safari for HTTP was the same than on the laptop. I was also able to see every website I was going to and save most of picture I was looking at. Scary isn't it ? Well, there are few things that I hav…

I saw this interactive link today on cnn.com: http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/11/travel/atl24/?hpt=hp_t1 There's a ton of info on what goes on behind the scenes of a big airport. It includes several photos and excerpts on those who make it happen, everyone from ATC, to gate personnel, to flight crews & much more. Pretty fascinating.

  9. I have just added an alternative to the Reputation System. This is more akin to a Like / Dislike system on steroids. I won't bore you with the details; you will see it at the bottom of every post. Everyone's post can be rated and now you can see who rated your post. I think this may be a better "mouse trap".

If so, do we get the see the 10 questions? Before they are submitted? When exactly should we expect to be able to read the questions and answers? Regards, Ray

  12. You might think it strange a Brit would post this message but the assassination of John F Kennedy 50 years ago tomorrow was an event that has stayed in my memory since I first heard about it as a 12 year-old living in Australia. When I told a friend's mother on the Saturday morning (they're 10 hours ahead of the UK and 16 ahead of Dallas time) I can still recall her shock and ending up in tears. I didn't know of his achievements at the time but became aware of them as I grew up. I think it's fair to say he was probably your most charismatic president and was widely but not universally admired. I'm sure all the truth never came out at the Warren Commission and stil…

  16. Apparently the Norwegian CAA (Avinor) is looking for people with hours on FSX or X-plane and a fascination for aviation. According to the job advert, participation in VATSIM is also a big bonus. The job is full time, paid accordingly, and candidates are given a 3 week training course. Translated job advert: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=no&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=no&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Frecruit.manpower.no%2Fno%2Fstilling%3Fjob%3D1009681&act=url Who of you wouldn't apply for this job..? At least I had a good laugh when I saw it!

I heard a rumor that an Autogyro may be coming into the area and it might be available for training. I'm not too comfortable with helicopters and I've never flown in one. I've done some reading on Autogyros and understand the differences and have done a lot of reading about autorotation in relation to my stall/spin training. I have to wonder about PR hype I am reading when I see comments claiming that "these aircraft are impossible to stall". Bunting sounds scary, especially since it is triggered by the fairly reflexive fixed wing pilot reaction to unload the wings when stalling. What are your opinions and thoughts on these things? Have any of you ever flo…

Earlier today an Etihad A330 performed a high speed RTO at YBBN....left some good sized skid marks on the runway....the cause? Invalid Airspeed Data on Captains side. Aircraft came back out, was checked and released around an hour later.... Back to the active, took off...and just passing 1000ft called "MAYDAY"....no airspeed indications. Aircraft was vectored out over the bay and offered to dump fuel, and he advised he could not. The aircraft did not have the dump system option (it is an option not taken up by Etihad) After 30 minutes of troubleshooting, aircraft was vectored back in, flying using ground speed readouts. Landed with 6 hours worth of fuel st…

Hi guys. This is my first post. Just wanted to share an experience I had recently doing some virtual flying. I've been into flightsims for over 10 years with MSFS as my main focus and the occasional foray into X-Plane..and more recently I've enjoyed the superb graphics in Aerofly FS..but soon got tired of its sterile atmosphere as there were no Ai traffic or cars -just me an the plane. Most fun sim Anyway, the most fun I've ever had flying virtually happened a few weeks ago when I tried out Grand-Theft-Auto-Five on PS3. I'm no shootem-up fan, I only dabble in the GTA series for the realworld virtual environments and of course the flying and parachuting…
