Hangar Chat

This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar.  Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here.  Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude, but please remember that, first and foremost, this is a flight-simulator oriented site frequented by people from all walks of life.

I have to confess... I may have gotten a little teary-eyed near the end there... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIEIvi2MuEk#t=304 PD: How can Iembed the video here....

  2. I've been on a few flights with Air New Zealand recently and am becoming interested in making recordings as well as taking photos during the flight. The annoying thing is that the crew seem to prohibit the use of any electronic devices during takeoff and landing (i.e. the parts of the flight most probable to be scenic) so I co-operate and turn my recording device (a Galaxy S3 in airplane mode) right off when the call is made. Going onto sites like Youtube and Airliners.net however reveals a plethora of photos and (in the case of Youtube) even full-flight video recordings. Do these rules differ in other countries or are the people taking these photos/videos just being snea…

Just because he can - ENVIOUS! "Brad, who has done everything from sleep in the trenches to learn to drive a tank for [his new war drama Fury], has now invested in one of the iconic machines." The 49-year-old actor is already a qualified pilot but will reportedly receive lessons on how to safely manage the vintage aircraft, which was popularly used by the RAF and other allied forces during the Second World War, at the Boultbee Flying Academy in Oxford. A spokesman for the academy said: "We don't comment on who we teach, but we have high-profile people. Buying Spitfires is very popular with wealthy individuals." Gotta admit - pretty bad-assed.

  4. So tell me, i'm curious, how long do you spend setting FSX/FS9 up before the aircraft is on the ramp and the controls are at your hands? For me I spend at least 15 minutes finding the right charts whilst clearing my desk, setting my screen and chair up, plugging my joystick in, gathering resources such as food and drinks, and booting up FS in the correct way before i'm actually in the sim ready to play. Sometimes it can take 20/25 minutes on a bad day if FS is not behaving or I need to mess about injecting REX weather or textures. I'm trying to reduce the time i spend messing around pre-flight because it annoys me to no end and often the thought of having to do so…

Our attempt to upgrade the system tonight failed. It took us 10 minutes to install the upgrade, and four hours to recover from it. Our apologies for that folks. We won't be doing any alterations for a while. We do not want to go through that again.

60 Minutes aired an interesting story which announced it earlier tonight. The 60 Minutes broadcast was real; but I don't know about the story regarding Amazon's plans for delivery drones. It's still in the R&D stage according to Bezos; who can certainly afford it; and they would require the FAA's approval. see here: Ben

UK ATC is having serious problems. The number of controller positions is reduced during the night period when there's low demand. The additional positions could not be brought on-line this morning so there is severe disruption to flights. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25278163

I'd just like to take the time to vent my frustration at Google and what they've done to YouTube, attempting to turn it into a social network, which is a utter failure. I can no longer reply to anyone at all, not at least without jumping through a lot of ridiculous and unnecessary hoops. I'm going to have to take a very hard look at what I do with my next video, and that hard look is already eyeing Vimeo. What I tell my 25k+ subscribers is a different story. I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the nation of South Africa as well as the extended family of this phenomenal individual. May he rest in peace. While I knew that he'd been awarded an Honorary Knighthood, I was not aware of his other awards. Nelson Mandela received Knights Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav and The Order of the Elephant (Danish: Elefantordenen) (the highest order of Denmark. It has existed since 1693, and is almost exclusively bestowed on royalty and heads of state.) *While officially he was not entitled to use the pre-nominative "Sir", I think it is appropriate at this time.

I love to simulate air charters and I know.. technically they can be from anywhere to anywhere.. but my question is ... some of those small payware airports from Orbx.. like 1S2, 3W5, 0S9, 7S3, etc.. does anyone know if these were every used for air charter ops.. and I don't mean setting up your FBO there.. but just an occasional pickup etc.. I guess it's possible correct but not likely?

Just speculating on the future. Where do you think entertainment simmers we'll be in 5 years? Economically I don't think there is room for 3 flight sims in the main stream. At Least one will fall, perhaps two? Possibilities.... 1) FSX falls, X-Plane falls, and P3D takes over with a entertainment license. 2) FSX falls, P3D falls and X-Plane takes over 3) FSX falls, P3D is the serious commercial training Sim, and X-Plane becomes the new mainstream entertainment Sim. 4) Some other Sim in the works we don't know about yet takes over. 5) Any other scenarios? I think in all cases, FSX will be dying a slow death, and that's a good thing! What do you think?

Hi guys, I passed my PPL test 3 days ago on the busiest aerodrome in New Zealand, Ardmore. To give you some ideas how busy it is, last Saturday on a solo flight, I was boxed in by a WW2 radial yellow plane, a BAC-167 Strikemaster, two BC duchess, one 152, and four 172R on the run-up area.

I saw this posted on another forum (for combat flight sims). It's written for combat flight sim fans but I think it is equally applicable to us here: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3870304/Flightsim_Fans#Post3870304 "Hey, remember the golden 90s, when they released a ton of fantastic combat flightsims? I tell you, the whole genre is dead now. Sad, isn't it?" "Didn't you hear? SuperSim is developing a new flightsim, scheduled for next summer." "SuperSim? I'll never buy anything from them again since the Mustang desaster." "The Mustang desaster?" "Don't you remember? In their 2003 release of 'Aces over Texas' the top speed of the P-51 was at …

Am I getting indulgent if not soft wth age, did I miss the juicy ones or did the psychos leave the hobby  ?

  21. I would like to announce that Jim Young (Firehawk44) has been promoted to Director of the Forums and as a result leads our dedicated team of forum moderators and managers. Jim has been with the AVSIM team for a long time and is a retired government employee who gets easily distracted by golf. Fortunately for us, this distraction does not last long enough in his day to keep him from fulfilling his new responsibilities in the forum. Jim has been a solid contributor to our team over the years and it is with a tremendous amount of gratitude that we welcome Jim stepping up to take on this position. I ask that you give Jim your support and please join me in congratulating Jim o…

  25. Every site that runs a forum software like ours allows the administrators to use "warning" systems and points collections to manage the community. We have recently revamped our system and want everyone to be aware of it, and the types of actions that will result in warning points given. Here are the points and reasons, and the consequences. Each offense has a time assigned to the warning; that is, one offense may have a 90 days period where the points given stay. After 90 days, those points are automatically removed. Point are additive. That is, if a person receives a warning with 2 points and 90 days, and then on the 60th day, gets another 5 points added, t…
