Today, October 20th, marks a particularly dark day in the worlds of Music AND Aviation... 36 years ago today, the chartered Convair CV-240 with "Southern Rock" super group Lynard Skynyrd on board, crashed in a swampy marsh area near Jackson, Ms. while attempting an emergency landing after the aircraft declaired a "Low fuel situation". The exact origins of the problems, and indeed, ultimate causal factor of the crash, can be found here: http://www.airdisaster.com/reports/ntsb/AAR78-06.pdf Killed in the crash, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (older sister of Steve), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pil…

  2. Just a thought that hit me today. Why are no large, long-range passenger turboprops being built? I'm thinking of something with around 160-200 seats, in other words a bit larger than a 737, and cabable of transcontinental US routes as well as trans-atlantic flights. After some quick studies of most of the largest turboprobs, I find a few which are, or were, capable of cruise speeds almost as good as those of modern jets. A few examples: Lockeed Electra - 325 knots Ilyushin Il-18 - 337 knots Lockheed C-130J - 348 knots Antonov An-10 - 350 knots Dash 8 Q400 - 360 knots (it's not that large though). Saab 2000 - 370 knots (not that large either) Tupolev Tu-114 - 41…

Hello fellow PC enthusiasts and simmers! I have some questions and would really love some volunteered answers from those more experienced than I. I'm a returning military pilot, have been out of the flight deck for some 12 years now looking to return and have some things to work on and trying to do so cost efficiently. I'm hoping to add a Sim to my arsenal of training options with some specific goals and wondered where you would suggest I'd start. I need to do an IPC in a Diamond DA40 on G1000 glass. After that's accomplished, I need to eventually get to ATP flight schools and add my MEL ATP rating in a Piper Seneca II on steam gauges. Any recommended sim/3PD…

Seldom discussed, but one of my main concerns about the myriad of addon stores is safety of personal information stored in all those places. Seems my concerns were well founded as I just got a phonecall from my bank informing me that my credit card has been tried "emptied". Luckily my bank has good routines and since the amount was quite large they stopped it and called me up to ask for clearance. They have no idea how or where the hackers had gotten the info from, but since I just got a new card I know exactly where it has been used in the last two months - all transactins has been to online flightsim addon stores. One of the things about Microsoft FLIGHT I applauded…

A few weeks ago I had a chance to take a copter flight over the Grand Canyon. It was a gorgeous day, and the service was top notch. A once in a lifetime experience for anyone who loves to fly. I sat front seat on the way there, in the back on the way back and both perspectives were a lot of fun. Here's a link to the pics I posted: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/422272-grand-canyon-flight/?view=getnewpost I would have posted sooner but I was a way from home for almost six weeks and just got settled in back home a couple of days ago. It's great to be back visiting the forums again.... Regards, John

So passenger Les Price who weighs 235kg was told by the airline he was flying with he would have to purchase 2 tickets because anyone over 127kg will require the extra space. The airline booking system assigned his two seats 2 rows apart from each other. Poor guy as he did everything the airline asked of him. The booking system obviously does not reflect the airline policy. Looks like the software needs to be updated. http://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/travel-troubles/9284568/Obese-man-forced-to-buy-two-seats

  9. http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/air-canada-in-hot-water-over-lost-dog-dismissive-email-1.1991099 Even though I'm only less than a 10 minute drive to CYYZ, I've never flown AC, but they do have a pretty bad rep from what I hear. This latest story is just stupidity. How do you lose a dog? According to the article, the dog was hit by a car after escaping, but not confirmed if he's dead or alive. I seriously hope he's alright. I feel so bad for the dog and his owners. And the inappropriate comments by the airline's spokesman just shows how unprofessional some of these idiots in high positions are. SHAME on you Air Canada. SHAME on you!

Dozens of people were killed in southern Laos when a plane crashed into the Mekong River. Foreigners from some 10 countries including seven from France were among the dead, as well as Laotian nationals. The plane belonging to state-run Lao Airlines crashed in bad weather just before it was due to land at Pakse airport. A Lao Airlines statement on Facebook gave a total of 49 dead; other earlier reports put the figure at 44. The statement said there was no news of any survivors so far. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24554128 https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=598612626867764&set=a.422306681165027.100941.416915175037511&type=1&thea…

While it is exiting to see aerofly FS and Prepar3D v2 being in development, I still lament that flight sims are lagging behind the general development in computer graphics. If they can run this level of graphics and AI on a Playstation, imagine what could have been done with a state of the art flight simulator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imIkmHCo8Lw All I can say is, too bad one got hooked on flight sims, and not shoot 'em ups!

Hello; I have been thinking of writing this for some time now, with this being Canadian Thanksgiving tomorrow I felt it appropriate to post today. I want to give a big thank you to everyone who has made a contribution to this hobby of ours. All the freeware ,payware developers, all the folks who put out tips & tricks. Everyone who has contributed in any way. You have all had a tremendous hand in making my sim experience one that I constantly marvel at. Let me not forget those who host this site and flight Sim. My thoughts are also with those who are no longer able to share. Happy Thanksgiving one and all. Best Regards, David

  16. Hello. I'm working on a research project for my high school class on government policy. The focus is around the regulations around the D.C. SFRA, and it's impact on national security, aviation business, air traffic controllers, and the pilots who fly in the airspace. If you have any general knowledge or greater about the D.C. SFRA, Please visit the following link and respond to the short 2 minute poll. This will provide data for a high school research project. Thank You. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1aORHSE6bKa1KgdUsRewf1UElhkvVbZtFkoo7b_w9-Uo/viewform

If we opened up our Blogging system to the entire community so that anyone could have their own, how many of you would be interested? We have been thinking about it and we'll open the blogs to everyone if there is enough interest by those that would maintain their blog for more than a day or two. Let us know!

Hi. Pretty simple: taxi or taxy? I've seen an increase recently in taxy but have always spelt it with an 'i'. OED says 'Taxi' except in the present participle where a 'y' is acceptable: taxiing or taxying but taxi not taxy. The only OED use for taxy is as a suffix. Where did the use of 'taxy' originate? Cheers, D
