  1. The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Well, because that's the way they built them in England, and English engineers designed the first US railroads. Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the wagon tramways, and that's the gauge they used. So, why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that same wheel spacing. Why did the wagons hav…

  2. Hello! This question is directed to the old skool FlightSim users that may still be out there, so here it goes: Does anyone know who were the original creators of Bush Flying Unlimited, and when it was originally Created? I know that when I started Simming around '10, BFU was already established with FS2002. Had it been around earlier than that? Just curious; flying 'for' BFU really stoked my interest in Bush flying and becoming more proficient. I have many of the Scenery created for BFU and have a good number of Repaints for FS9. If anyone has a line on more Repaints that would be awesome. Thanks for looking! Alan 🙂

I recently read a Quora thread of answers about tactical callsigns in the military. Colin McGregor (brother of Ewan McGregor) was a former Tornado GR4 pilot in the Royal Air Force. Can you guess correctly what his callsign was? (No peeking now!) Spoiler OB Two

I am approaching airport. Control indicates to land on runway ZZ, no ILS. But I want another ILS runway XX. Request approach to runway XX, with a XXX transition. Control says: "You are cleared to RW XX (see!) with xxx transition, SIDESTEP RUNWAY ZZ! I understand I should land on RW XX, the one I wanted. As I approach airport tower will tell me to land on the RW ZZ! What a mess! Hoh can I request a RW to land? BPilot

  16. While I have to confess that I do see interesting features in both MFS 2020 and now XP12 in as far as weather modelling goes and the new approaches followed by both, I must also state that I somehow feel as being unfair to those who, for years, have given us the chance to get in FSX, P3D and even XP11, very good weather products to enhance our experience, that they will not be able to take full use of the core weather system on both platforms 😕 - I'm not sure this is the case with X-Plane 12 because it is still in early Beta. I thought to myself that there's yet another flight simulator, Aerofly FS 4, whose developer stated wanted to create a better weather model ( a…

  17. As the plane from Tampa was taxiing to the gate after landing at the Newark Liberty International apt, screams rose from the business class because they had spotted a snake. "Airport wildlife operations personnel and police department officers removed the garter snake and subsequently released it into the wild," the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a statement. https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2022/10/18/newark-airport-snake-united-flight/

See https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2022/10/19/xbox-playstation-call-duty-mobile-game-store/ Quoting from this article: "After years of touting cloud gaming, Microsoft presented a much less optimistic outlook on the nascent technology this week. The company called cloud gaming “immature” and “unproven” in a dense, tidbit-rich filing as part of its latest effort to push through a $68.7 billion deal to acquire video game maker Activision Blizzard, pending regulatory approval. “Today cloud gaming remains in its infancy and unproven as a consumer proposition,” Microsoft wrote in a Tuesday response to the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), …

The other 99% of our DNA is the microbiome. 38 trillion microorganisms in the colon alone. Even in terms of our cells, there are 30 trillion human cells in our entire bodies, but 38 trillion non-human cells in the colon alone. In the 1990's we didn't have enough computing power to analyse the microbiome data in our poo. Now we do, and the implications are stunning. Transfer an obese humans poo to a mouse, and the mouse gets obese. 😵 No organism on the planet is without a microbiome. Bacteria mostly but also fungus, and not forgetting what is believed to be the oldest organism on the planet, namely Archaea, an anaerobic organism that was around even before t…
