Thank you for this, I wasn't aware of these changes comparing to XP11. I noticed that FPS in XP12 (In VR especially) dropped a lot, and I couldn't find the culprit. Maybe leaving forest entries caused that. Will test it for sure.

I am using SimHeaven and GF. You need to deactivate the forest-layer of all SimHeaven parts. I use the tool "xToolbox"  for these operations. Moreover in the "scenery_packs.ini" place the GF

4. LiveTraffic If you want to see live traffic (RealTraffic to feed traffic to LiveTraffic Plugin recommended)As a long time MSFS 2020/2024 user, there is a transition to see the best XP12 has to offer.  There are elements in XP12 that look better in MSFS, but if you have the patience to go through this transition to the XP12 way of showing you the world, you will appreciate just how fantastic the XP world as a whole looks.
5. If you want Satellite imagery you will need AutoOrtho or the XP version of the Map Enhancement Tool - I use this and found it easy to setup.

Thanks for that list 🙂

Didn't you also perform some action for the coloring/lighting ? I have to read your topic about the grey haze again to remember the details, but I thought you had done some configuration to improve the rendering itself, didn't you ?

Well, thank you all again,

Indeed I was referring to XP Map Enhancement Pro @Pe11e !

I did follow the installation instructions from the Global Forests support forum which state that the "vegetation" entries fro each SH scenery area should be DISABLED, and I placed the GF entry after all SH entries, as also suggested there.

Maybe @Pe11 could try that too, because he is placing the GF entry above all SH (?)

I did give it a try, although I couldn't find many places to test forests, but went flying from LOWI and tried a winter start too and did notice the difference.

It's an inexpensive addon and I believe it'll be able to further enhance the overall display of scenery near "tree-intense" areas 🙂 and it doesn't harm your out-landings because colliding with the trees will not cause damage, unlike in RL 🙂

I'm seriously contemplating getting X-Plane 12, but I'm totally not looking forward to all this hassle to make the sim look good...

You would probably spend more time setting up your controls in MSFS 2024 than getting XP12 to look good. And once its done; its done.

Lol, could be true, although it took me less than ten minutes to setup my controls in MSFS 2024. I'll take the plunge and get everything @MrBitstFlyer suggested. I assume the map enhancement tool will also improve the look of X-Plane 12, so I'll throw that in the mix as well.

Cheers, Bert

Yes and the pro version is well worth the couple of quid/dollars for a months trial too.

PS for traffic I use traffic global with the regent traffic mod for up to date models and timetables.

Despite @MrBitstFlyer´s genuine excitement and heartwarming enthusiasm I stand by my advice that prospective buyers - especially coming from a firm MSFS entrenchment stance - get the free demo for X-Plane 12 first.
While it is limited to 15 minutes of "joystick action", you can run it for hours on end (even fly your plane around on autopilot). All the "enhancements" work on the demo, too - and you can genuinely check out if what you get as a final result is to your liking, before springing the money, then being disappointed and coming here with a "Uh, what are you going on about, you made me spend 60$ on it and it looks NOTHING like ***".

While X-Plane 12 has made great strides in the visual department (clouds, lighting) and can be pimped in the scenery department with orthos and other add-ons, I believe that any sim user mostly focused on the visual aspect of scenery will still lean towards MSFS.

If all the enhancements work in the demo, that is good advice.  As I said before, one really has to 'tune in' to the way XP12 presents things. My enthusiasm comes from getting through that adjustment phase, configuring XP12 correctly, and then seeing that the whole XP experience is what's important - not to focus on the things MSFS may do better.

An interesting point, because my thoughts on the visuals in XP12 are the other way 🙂  I clearly agree an initial look at either sim will see many instantly pick MSFS, but if they were presented with a fully pimped XP12, and forced to use it for a few days, I believe a good percentage would stick with XP12.

As much as I also like MSFS that is 100% true, at least on my end!!! I've had to start from scratch I don't know how many times after a "mandatory" update from Asobo. I'd say once it's done it's done until the next Asobo update! Rock solid in XP12!

That's not Global Forest, so I would imagine the vegetation will look different. I'm also thinking about disabling SimHaven #7 for forest and see the difference if any.

Start with an Orbx TrueEarth regional scenery. Click "install". BOOM - done!

IIRC, they have a free demo area of TE Great Britain South, and it's gorgeous.
