It seems that a fast i7 CPU doesn't need faster RAM over and above DDR3-1066 as the real world performance 'increase' is negligible. From TOM'S HARDWARE,....read on...MOST INTERESTING! I had gone with DDR3-1800, but have since spec'ed back to DDR3-1066. No wonder Intel doesn't 'officially' support anything past DDR3-1066, or that Dell on their high end has stated that they ship with DDR3-1066 as their own labs and engineers have seen little gain in performance over and above DDR3-1066. The following is from Tom's Hardware, and you can catch the whole report there, if you wish....-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------…

I built a new computer with Intel i7. I have 12GB of DDR3 RAM and 1.5 TB hard disk. To decrease the amount of defragmentation time required and to have maximum speed, should I put FSX, X-Plane, FS9 on a separate 200MB harddrive that I have from my other computer or should i partition the 1.5TB disk and put the flight programs in the new partition. When I built the computer, the sales buy said to get the 1.5TB instead of say two 500MB drives because the 1.5 TB would have the files placed closer together and so the seek time would be quicker.Anyway, that's all the info I can provide. What do you folks recommend for decreasing fragmentation problems and fastest performan…

Hello all-I am interested in overclocking my Q6600 from 2.6Ghz to 3.0Ghz - more if it's possible. Can anybody tell me the correct requirements and procedure for doing this? I have been told that I will need better RAM, as mine only runs at 533Mhz right now. My plan is to upgrade to 4GB of DDR2 RAM at the best speed possible, which I believe would be 122Mhz.Specifically, I was looking at buying this set of RAM.The only other concern I was aware of was proper cooling for the processor. I just have the cooler that came in the box, and I was told that this would be sufficient cooling if I only went to 3.0Ghz.So, is there something I'm missing? Or would this be a good setup to…

Well I just bit the bullet and brought it. Cant complain. Although id would say your be better off with the 955 for 2 reasons, its 3.2 gig and is a black edition, the multiplier is unlocked, the 945 has a locked multiplier at 15X. It can still be overclocked, but i have mine in a am2+ socket with a 940 bios, it works ok, ids it correctly but i have limited vcore Volt adjustments. Would love to see it runing at 3.2 gig and even 3.4 which is only a fsb of 226 meg. Well ill play a little later. If anyone gets it and it wont boot, it id the vcore at 1v i had to nudge it up by 0.05 volts, now is stable. It hasnt improved my frame rates, but now in YSSY with heaps of traffic, a…

Hello,I'm looking for a new laptop that will be used as our main household computer. It's just me and my wife. I have my desktop for FS so we will be using this email, MS Office, ITunes (we will be storing the music files on a NASDrive) and Internet. Sounds simple but we would also like to be able to use it for gaming while we travel. I doubt we will by playing Crysis on the thing, probably just mutplayer games and strategy games. Nonetheless, I'd like it to run CitiesXL properly when that comes out. I'm sure I will try to load FSX on it at some point but that won't be the main function for this rig. I like the Asus G71G http://www.asusrog.com/G71G-Q2.html but it seems li…

........and order my new FSX computer, and would appreciate any comments on my choice. I have to have a laptop in my situation so I'm just a couple of key presses from shooting my dell credit card with an Alienware M17x. I previously used a XPS 1710 (STOLEN!) and it actually did a very good job with framerates locked at 30 and medium settings. I chose not to go with SLI since it seems it is only a small advantage in higher AA, resolutions, etc. Instead I opted to spend more for the CPU since it can easily be OC'd to 3+ GHz. Also the SSD (solid state hardrive) should load scenery real quick.. With my EPP discount it prices out just below 3K, what do you guys think?

There is a BIOS update available for my MB. I have flashed the BIOS on other computers in the past but not recently enough to know whether I can expect FSX or other software activation to be clobbered, or if any other license issues might crop up and require re-installation. I'd just like to get a feel for the amount of aggravation that might result from an operation with, as yet, unknown benefits (no release notes available). I suppose I could always wait until I have to re-install the OS and do the BIOS update before re-installing other stuff. Any thoughts?Rick

Hi All,My current system is a Gateway DX4200-UB001A. System specs are as follows:CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9550 (2.2 GHz)RAM: 6GB (2GB x2+1GB x2) DDR2 667Hard Drive: 640 GB (7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA II)Graphics: ATI Radeon 3450 (One on the motherboard+One on a PCI Express Card)Chipset: AMD 780GOS: Vista Home Premium 64-bit Any suggestions to increase framerates for FSX, depending on the aircraft I get about 8-15FPS for Project Opensky Aircraft + LDS767, and 20-30FPS for Project Airbus. These go down while on the ground by 2 to 5FPS for POSKY+LDS, while they go down about 5-10FPS for pairbus. Also will switch to Windows 7 after it launches. Any suggestions for upgrades to bring th…

Hi guys,Wanted a new system and have been looking at systems with 8GB RAM - is this necessary for Vista (have heard that the OS takes up 3GB RAM at any one time).Obviously I'd rather go with 4GB RAM (it's cheaper!)For example, would this system run FSX with no jutters, with only 4GB RAM? (saw it on the Gateway website) Intel

NOT a silver bullet but just in case it helps anyone else I thought I'd share this:I have raised the PCIE speed in BIOS from 100MHz to 110MHz with IMHO positive results. The fps do not really increase, but the sim is - I think - smoother / less choppy when under really heavy load. The effect is a bit like changing from "Unlimited" fps to a capped fps. Unless this is placebo, I suppose the extra speed (bandwidth?) gives the GPU a little more head-room to handle the disorderly muddle of stuff that FSX throws at it. If so, then presumably this benefit will only be experienced (if at all) by people whose CPUs are "too fast" compared with the other components in the computer.…

I have a Dell XPS 430 and never gave sound much of a thought aside from the occasional niggling problem. Sound cards used to be a big deal. Is native hardware sound so good that there is no longer any point to buying a sound card like Sound Blaster to slide into a slot?

Upon first boot of a new build (AMD PHII X 2 550 AM3 and Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P MB) I recieved the following BIOS message:Verifying DMI Pool Data.........AMD Data Change.........Update New Data to DMI!The system then hangs at a blinking cursor.I've cleared the CMOS, flashed the BIOS with the original and an update. No change in the BIOS message and system hang. Anyone have thoughts about this before I RMA the processor and motherboard?Jim Harnes
