Hi. I recently downloaded the outer terrain GTL editor. However, none of the sample GTL files provided will load in the editor. The editor's title bar indicates otherwise (i.e. the tile path/filename appears in the titlebar) but the textures never appear. Also, saving a tile appears to generate a dump file (looks like a dump of the hexadecimal as decimal) rather than saving changes to the tile itself. I've followed the instructions in the ReadMe file to the letter but just can't get it to work!Has anyone experienced similar problems with this tool? Many thanks

  3. Started by jstonehouse,

Agtim tells me that the GTL file format is undocumented so I'm providing the below to redress this, and for the benefit of anyone interested in how FU3 generates the Great Wasteland that is the Outer Terrain!File StructureThe outer terrain's .gtl files are binary files and can be read and written to by any programming language capable of opening a file in binary mode and converting each byte to a decimal value. The information in each .gtl file is comprised of as many two-byte groups as are required to fill a 256x256 (65536 'cell') matrix. The second byte in each two-byte group sets the terrain type and is an integer value between 0 and 25, representing the 26 possible te…

A few questions for readers of and contributors to this forum. Can anyone tell me how to use my new ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP card with my AsRock mobo to run FU3 without crashing to desktop after 30 seconds? I bought it to replace a Nvidia 7 series that packed up after 4 months or so. I really wish it hadn't died because while the replacement is superb with new games, it doesn't seem to do at all well with this older sim.Somewhat off the point, on a couple of (30 second) flights I got the 1 pixel gap in my F3 view. I thought that only happened with some Nvidia cards...?On a different note, the *.tag file in seamod.zip and the *.res file in real_microlight_v1.10.zip appear to …

It is possible to install a reduced part of UK-South. Robert's big zip file is the first starting point but there is a lot to do before you can transform this add on to a working FU3 region. You must follow the task list below very carefully don't try to shortcut or simplify ! once you have downloaded FU3_UKS_2006.zip from http://lundbykrat.com/FU3/FU3.htm1. open the zip file and check on error (key: shift t) to be sure to have a valid zip file.2. select a disk drive with enough free space, 2 gigabytes are OK for the test, 16 gigabytes are for the full set !3. unzip the full archive into the disk drive e.g. F:\ for the F-drive. You get now a folder named FU3_UKS_2006 with…

I flew a stock aircraft the other day and noticed the old problem with FU III and Nvidia cards. I never saw that line previously since I had a Voodoo card. Now, I basically know what I need to do but do I pull the scenery window down, the cockpit window up or both? I gather it takes a one pixel overlap to avoid this shimmering line.

I just noticed a Galaxy plowing the ground as it taxied for take-off at McChord. This may be due to the upgraded elevation for the Seattle region. If AI aircraft follow a trajectory entirely set by numbers and "know" nothing of where terra firma starts the solution will be to raise the path about 10 feet / 3m. Hans Petter

I am very happy that FU3 (plus FU2 scenery plus the patch) installed flawlessly on my Vista 32 system. I am running the sim at full settings plus 16x AA and 16x aniso. The only problem I had was with the 2D panel getting garbled with the AA setting; I quickly found the solution by disabling the AA-Gamma Correction setting on the nvidia control panel. Now FU3 is running perfect :( Now with the tedious work of adding back addons! Any help on the absolute necessities?Even though my FSX setup is outstanding, especially with the latest Orbx sceneries and Carenado planes, flying in FU3 has still this indescribable charm: the sound of the Cessna, the ATC, the rain..Anyway, glad…

Hi everyone, I decided to dust off my copy of FU3 after a 4-5 year break. I was wondering where I can find Chris Low's Seattle scenery-- I noticed that avsim's library is offline. PS- I tried installing the FU2 region, but each time the game begins to load the exterior regions the game crashes suddenly. I had to reinstall with the Seattle region only. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks!

Does anyone remember how to turn on the pilot controlled lighting at uncontrolled airports in FU3? I remember it was the "l" key in FU2....but that turns on the landing lights in FU3. Can't seem to find it in the manual or google. Thanks in advance..-tz

hey everyone, There used to be a word document of all airports in Flight Unlimited 2-- It was by someone named Mike Magatagan (cited as a reference in Sergey Ostrozhinsky's FU3 Airports guide) Does anyone know where I can find this? Thanks!PS- I think the document was called "FU2 Airports" or something

  16. Hi to all.I recently purchased an Nvidia 8400GS graphics card after my previous card blew.FS9 runs beautifully with it [ superb AA ], as does FU 2 with the aid of Nhancer. However FU3 is a bit of a disappointment. My previous card [ an Nvidia 7600 I believe ] handled FU3 very well after tweaking things with Nhancer. Try as I might, I can't get rid of jaggies with the new card, particularly on the horizon.Any suggestions would be appreciated.Ps I will post my profile for FU 2 if anybody would like it.Regards to all :(

Hi all,Came across this interesting article in Simpilot comparing the FSX and X-Plane flight models of the Cessna 172.http://www.simpilotnet.com/index.php?optio...0&Itemid=32Interesting conclusions, although as the writer observes, to be taken with a large dose of caution. It did set me to thinking about the sideslip authenticity of the FU3 C172 flight model. I have experienced the phenomenon personally, but not while at the controls. After a few seconds of sinking like a stone, my stomach ended up somewhere.. well... up there. :( :( :( Has anyone tried this in FU3? I can't unfortunately as I am forced to used co-ordinated rudder at the moment. B) How does the ten y…

Hi all. I haven't posted before (just lazy I suppose) but now that evenings in the northern hemisphere are getting longer I need an excuse for remaining on my butt...I have a FU3 with SanFran and a lot of extras (God! you guys are good to me) and have recently been changing a few airports and adding a few of my own. I'd like to learn about AI but I'm unwilling to move on until a problem's been solved...I started a replacement ALW for the outer terrain using the FAA's silhouette airport diagrams and have models, taxiways, runways et c. but when I have more than 1 runway + 2 taxiways + 1 parking spot a whole host of runway lights disappear... edge, centre, REIL threshold...…

G'day all, I have been absent from flight sims for many years due to not having a computer powerful enough to run it decently. I have since come in to a powerful computer and have installed FU however it refuses to work and comes up with an error msg stating "indeo video playback". Does anyone have any idea's on this. The computer is running XP, I tryed searching the forum for issues experienced with XP but couldnt find one. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be fantastic! I cant wait to try out the Staggering over Seattle 08 and San Fran 06!!! Thanks, Daniel

There is a new builder kit in the library for an upgrade of the UK-South region. If you don't have the Solent area in your region then this kit will add 9 tiles covering the Solent area. You will have to download the texture using Maps2BGL then create FU3 tiles using the script and tools in the kit.As you can see on the map above there will be some painting work required for the water area of near all tiles. Before painting it's looks like that:Models are still placed in this area, Bembridge and IOW will fit the texture. Southampton airport nedd a small move using FLED. :( Andre

The first region expansion kit was released in February 2007 for Seattle. Now map services are availlable more and more with good textures. After conversion of all .cpd files into .bin you can alter the tiles inserting new texture parts or even new tiles. There will be possible now to make the airport of Sacramento Metropolitan and more...The current region expansion is set to 16x16 tiles (original game is 10x11) but they can be easily expanded to 64x64 if one will do so much tiles :-)Just to remember 1 tile covers a range of 1 square mile. The elevation are left as is during this conversion - so all packages and airports we work as usual. To make new tiles you just need gra…
