First of all, let me apologize for the raw style in which I am presenting this, there is currently no other means in which I can upload the file.As many of you probably noticed, the new coastlines in FS2004 appear less detailed and jagged than their FS2002 counterparts. This is because the FS team completely remade the coastline textures with the intention to make them more varied. It would seem that they did not have time to refine them, however. The large section that I pasted is an edited terrain.cfg file, which loads the older FS2002 coastline texture files instead of the newer FS2004 textures. To make use of this, first make a backup of the terrain.cfg file which i…

Here's an interesting demonstration of anisotropic filtering, showing the improvement in texture sharpness that can be achieved with even modest anisotropic settings.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/27382.gifOf course, many cards allow you to go higher, but I've found that 8x or above has almost too much detail, and it looks odd to have the autogen fade away but the landscape remain sharp. 4x is the sweet spot for me.If you computer can handle it, this filtering really makes the landscape more vivid. Setting mipmapping to 5 has the same sort of effect as 2x anisotropic, but at the cost of shimmering.A caveat: Because anti-aliasing and filtering are now also applied to t…

Just installed fs2004 tonight. For some reason, I cannot change the settings at all. I click on settings in the menu, and I can choose display, general, etc., but within each menu I cannnot access teh sub menus. I cannot move sliders, change resolutions (or even see that there is an option to change resolutions for that matter). I'm confident the settings must be there, but I can't access them. The screen flickers a bit when I move my mouse where the tabs should be (I presume), but I cannot select anything. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone give me any help in fixing it?Thanks!JesseP.S. For what it's worth, fs2002 was working perfectly in all respects. I'…

I know there are a lot of frustrated flight simmers out there who may have been trying to get FS9 working on VIA chipset PCs or with NVIDIA FX cards.I have had real frustration over the last 5 days (YES I RECEIVED IT EARLY). However, tonight is the first I have been able to run it consistently. Here's my combo:-Gigabyte 7VRXP, AMD 2100XP, 512Mb RAM DDR333(actually 768MB now), PNY FX4200 64Mb Graphics Card (started with 44.03 driver upped to 44.67 later), 180Gb Data disk, 75Mb system disk, Running WinXP SP1 & WIN2000 SP4, DirectX9bFirst off I eagerly installed it on XP no problems after the 15 mins or so. Clicked on the icon and after a few seconds the splash screen van…

Hey everyone just thought i'd pass this info along. I know that not all drivers work the same on everyone's computer but ever since I got FS2004 I've been wrestling with 3d clouds impacting my FPS pretty badly. I've installed these new drivers and turned off anti aliasing and anistropic filtering and reduced my AGP to 1X and Im getting MUCH more fluid FPS in FS even with heavy clouds, I have the 3D clouds now set on the "ultra high" setting and I'm getting very fluid response through the clouds.Just thought I'd pass that along hope it helps someone else, this really is a great sim just gotta tweak it to get it smooth. Those damn clouds are killer!!! The price you pay …

  9. My terrain detail is set to land only and my water effects are set to high.I was looking at the water tonight, and the wave animation seems a bit odd. There is sort of a quick sequence where the waves seem to move, but then it all smears out into vertical bands.Sort of hard to explain, since it's important to see it in motion, but here's an animated gif that hopefully helps. You can see how it gets those vertical bands ... actually, it looks like what I see when the water effects are on low, except it just doesn't seem to "fit" with the animation sequence of the waves or the bump-mapping or whatever.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/27625.gifIs this consistent with what …

Hello, yesterday I got my copy of FS COF.In generall I like although I noticed 2 strange things :1) Frame rates in the cockpit are generally lower then for example in spot view. Makes a difference of sometimes 10 fps.2) Force feedback is very limited. While rolling down the runway I hardly have any force feedback. 3) The cummulus clouds sometimes look very srange with a dark rim around it. Anyone else notices these things and can something be done.config :P4 2.43D Creative Blaster ti4600512 MBWindow XPGreetings,Paul.

  11. Ok, I have the 9700 Pro, and I have not been having all the problems that other people have been describing. However, There is one quirk that I have noticed that maybe someone can shed some light on. Look at my pic and you will see what I mean. Once in awhile this will happen, sometimes over larger areas. Often it will disappear after a minute or so. Changing views does not make it go away. I've tried playing around with the display settings, to no avail. Has anyone else een this? Any ideas?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/27631.jpg

After having flown around for only a short amount of time I am amazed by the new weather/clouds.However....I tried the generic online weather (supplied by Jeppessen) but found this often to be completely of course and quite disappointing.I read about ActiveWeather (which has now been patched for 2004). Is this any better and if so in what respect compared to the generic online weahter engine. Thanks for any input.Marco

  15. Hi,I meet some troubles with certain aircraft. For example, I always start with the Cessna 172SP but when I choose the A340 from Aerodesign, the engines turn off. I tried to tun them on but only one engine out of four works !Another thing : when I fly the A319, I can't turn on the avionics because the ATC does not display and I can't hear any voice. Why ?I fly with the Paul GOLDING's AIRBUS A300-600/310 Panel (for FS2002).Please could you help me ?Thank you,;-)

For very specific reasons I will not mention any names but it has been quite a while now that I wanted to write about something that has become very common and we all have accepted it (it seems) with the greatest of ease:The new threat within the flightsim community is not piracy or illegal (mis)use of programs and addons but GREED! Most of us pay an arm and a leg (and for some even a lung and a ######) to keep our hobby i.e. obsession up to date. Just when we get a breather then the new flightsim will appear on the table and it will be time to upgrade the very old and unusable 18 month old PC and there goes the other lung and ###### as well

Anybody know when the new AFCAD will be released??I noticed that there will still be a heavy need for it besides from not THAT large amount of parking spots at major airports, the multiple runway use isnt up to reality.Say for instance if O'Hare got 2 runways open, the two active runways are used for both landings and takeoffs. So you will still have to hold short waiting for landing AC - altho allowed to position and hold.Wierd that MS didnt correct this since it doesnt make sense.

Here's my system:Dell 1.4ghz 8100256mb RDRAMnVidia3 Ti500Soundblaster 512WinMEI bought the system new to run fs2002, so it's 2 years old. I installed FS2004 today and after playing with it (thanks to the tip on Provantage!), I've noticed a progressive slowdown in the game to the point the frames begin to stutter.Anyway, after playing with the sliders, I see that most of the settings do not equate to the settings in FS2002. You have to move most settings back to the left to get decent frame rates (I have mine locked at 15).There are two types of stutters going on. The first freezes my sim for about 1 to 2 seconds and it appears the computer is locked up. I think it has to …

I have been playing (tweaking) FS9 for almost a week now, and I am sad to say that I have to put it back in the box for now.I have a real low end machine a 600Mhz Celeron with 394Megs of Ram and a GEForce 3 MX420 Video card with 64 Meg of Ram.On the average, my fram rates have been 5 FPS lower than FS2002. Which really isn't too bad. If I could get 10 to 15FPS on FS2004 at all times, I would be delighted. The problem is, I can't. Nothing drops me out of suspension of disbelief than sudden drops in frames. FS2000 had it in spades. (bad programming). FS2002 was unbelievably smooth. COF however is a mixed bag. I am amazed at the amount of detail and Mesh Complexity I …

I just wanted to let every one know that the beta 45.20 (for Win2K/WinXP) that fixes issues may not work for every setup.I just downloaded the beta 45.20 for my GeForce FX 5200 (AGP) and it looks like it doesn't work if I have it set to the Hardware Antialiasing. I still get only the plane in the Select a Flight screen.NVIDIA hasn't released the 44.67 drivers on their website yet, although www.guru3d.com has it. They also have 44.70 (go figure) although it's not certified by MS.I did subscribe to their newsletter so hopefully they'll let me know when any driver will be released :).

Before FS2004, I was getting very definite stutters when new textures loaded, mostly around airports and aircraft. Since installing FS2004 they have vanished. I'll have to qualify that with the admission that several things were upgraded at once: went from Win ME to XP, new Omega ATI drivers, and DX9. So not sure it was all due to FS, but it sure is nice without them! R.I.P. FS2002.Todd

Well, I'm really enjoying the ex-qwizzit detail in FS9 or 2004 or whatever MS seems to want to call it, but I see the dark clouds on the horizon...no , not the great ones in the sim.The gloomy ones of opportunist, previously-free, third party add on providers who now are waving the "money talks" banner. First FSUIPC goes shareware, now ACTIVE CAMERA, and more to follow I fear. So, to avoid obfuscating the current wave of joy overcoming flight simmers with the new version, here's my take on all this:1. Effort does deserve reward, so I understand wanting to be paid. I'm in business. I say this first to avoid a flame war and 4900 posts defending the capitalists on the l…

Hi all, Long time lurker-first time poster.I've seen a couple of posts about the engines of FS2002 prop planes imported into FS2004 quitting when entering the sim. Generally this is no problem. Just re-start the engine. The problem is with Dave Eckert's great Stearman. In the fix file readme he notes that there is no known fix for the gauges disappearing from the VC when the engine is shut down. They do not reappear when the engine is restarted. So, the question is, does anyone know of a way to stop this engine shut down from happening in the first place? Thanks for any help.

Just wanted to post that I completely fixed the problem I was having with FS2004 crashing while switching screens in XP.I had tried the new 45.20 drivers earlier today but while the problem was reduced it was not cured. I then thought about what Pete Dowson had mentioned about program's running in the background so I used XP's Taskmanager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) to closed all the programs running it would let me and whalla, no more crashing even under the harshest of switching.I then did a rebooted, did it again and wrote down what I was able to close and then checked each program one by one till I found the culprit, which for me was the Windows Office 98 Tool bar!I then reboot…

Now that FS 2004 is out, I really want to spend some time tweaking my yoke and pedals so they respond properly.Prior to installing FS 2004, I formatted my hard drive and reloaded XP Pro and FS 2004, and of course the Video Drivers.I am using the native CH drivers in XP. What I would like to do is start with the Beech King Air, get it dialed in and then move on to other aircraft. I still have a lot of slop in the controls. Can someone post their sensitivity settings for the Beech King Air using the USB CH Yoke and Pedals? The first question is:Use Control Manager?? My understanding is, if you don't need to program the buttons, you don't need it. It creates virtual devi…
