I have ordered some "Just Planes" DVDs last week and I have to say that I have expected more. 50% of their DVDs were of exceptionally poor quality from a manufacturing point of view, some didn't even run on 4 different DVD players. While the concept is great, the cameraman is not. I got one DVD to partially work and I have to say that the quality is hum-ho at best. Also on almost all approaches/landing that I have seen, the cameraman slowly starts to pan out of the side window instead of the COCKPIT. I wanted to scream and tell him to move to the cockpit. It is supposed to be cockpit video after all, no?I also found that about four out of five captains seem be extremely un…

I am well aware that in the day before GPS, pilots flew on Airways and routes between and in relation to VOR's and NDB's. These routes were found on LO and HI Charts and, given a need to fly between Point A and B, these charts would "show the approved routes" on how to get there. Now that we are in the day of GPS, can a person or company or organization set their own routes? It seems that GPS affords one the wonderful option to be able to fly a lot more direct than some of these Airways and Air Routes present.Or are Real World pilots still bound to the routes found, say on the typical Lo Chart? One more quick question... do airlines still fly NDB Routes? Thanks for the res…

http://www.ajc.com/news/content/business/d...14bizdelta.htmlNot surprising, considering their current status, not to mention New Orleans and Mobile were busy destinations for Delta.

  5. That is a question that has been on my mind since Wednesday of last week. How is it that we failed New Orleans? We...the United States of America. And it was tonight, that I heard the most logical explanation, and it came from all people...from Donald Rumsfield.Mr. Rumsfield was being interviewed by a rather conservative columnist (who I watch...there. I'm conservative too!) This columnist, knowing the heat the Bush administration is taking, tried to get Mr. Rumsfield to agree that local government, first response, initial crisis management all belonged to the locals, not the feds. He asked these questions of Rummy, and paused expecting a "...darn right, no way is t…

I've been re-reading "Winged Victory" by V M Yeates. Although fiction, it's basically an autobiographical account of the author's experience of flying Sopwith Camels in combat during 1918 and has been described as "the greatest novel of war in the air".He offers first-hand accounts of what flying a Camel was like, for example:"A stable machine had a prediliction for normal flying positions, and this had to be overcome every time you wanted to do anything, whereas A Camel had to be held in flying positon all the time, and was out of it in a flash. It was nose light, having a rotary engine weighting next to nothing per horse power, and was rigged tail heavy so that you had …

Shortly after that attack,a friend of a victim who died there created a memorial of two towers of light. They are in place where the tower buildings stood in my FS. I have had this in my FS9,since. Each time I fly over NYC,those light towers seen there are a reminder of all those gone on that day.Yes its sobering, but also very necessary we don't forget. As a former NYC resident, now here in the bone yard of FLA.,I think its an appropriate symbol. Along with Pearl Harbor, and the MAAMCMTY, this tribute by Mr. Steve Whalin, wtc_memorial does make this FS9 thing "AS REAL AS IT GETS" in many ways THANX VIN

Hi all AvsimmersAs a reasonably long time member of Avsim, I realise that maybe this is not the correct place to ask my question -- but I do so because I find most Avsimmers to be of a temperate disposition and I am not keen to ask it elsewhere.Watching the unfolding tragic events in New Orleans, I have become aware of something, which as an Australian, I find to be quite incomprehensible. I realise that civilisation is really only a thin veneer and mankind can be savage, I understand that poverty and drug addiction exist, I appreciate that people can be simply bad or crazy. But, can any of my American friends give me any kind of thoughts as to why snipers would be taking…

I flew into Chicago (real commercial flight) and as it was a very clear day, I looked out the window to enjoy the real life scenery, but as we passed Meigs Field, it wasn't there!!!! The land mass was there, but there was no runway visible, just dirt. Did they close this field down? Is it closed just for the winter? Anybody who lives in Chicago know what happened? I grew up in Chicago, but haven't been back for years. If it's not there anymore, Microsoft needs to update the Chicago scenery files. Thanks,Bruce

Hello all, I have almost written this post probably 10 times in the recent past but I have stopped short because I did not want anyone to feel as if I was "attacking" them. I have come to the conclusion that maybe if I go ahead and post it will make at least some people think before they make a mistake, one that goes on far too often here. What am I talking about? The way that we talk to one another, or should I say at one another. Before I continue I will say that I am guilty of this too so I am not claiming to be better than anyone else. All too often I see people getting mad or upset with someone's post and the poster does not understand why because they meant no harm…

Think about this. Over 1 million Americans have been wiped out. New Orleans is lost, at least for now. But these Americans are not lost, they live, yet at the same time they have nowhere to live.We can't keep on sending money...that runs out sooner than later. So instead I start this thread to encourage other folks to offer what they will do to help our Brothers and Sisters in the Gulf Coast Region. For me, I will begin to conserve gas, I will seek to volunteer in one fashion or another, and donate $XX.XX weekly to recovery and reconstruction efforts. What say you?Cheers!bt

Well here is a listing of files that should be compatabile with GW3 - the site is at:- http://biplaneflyer.100webcustomers.com/golden_age.htm hope this provides useful information for those looking for files for Golden Wings 3. The site is in it's infancy - I have tried to list as many files as I am aware that will work with GW3, but am sure I am likely to have overlooked a few - especially older fs2002 files that will work in GW3!!! Please note that some of the files will be found at more than one of the major sites- I've only included the site where I first came across the file. I am also aware that the scenery section will also needs to be added to and expanded in the …

  22. Avsim may not be the main culprit of this hypocrisy but I distinctly remember all the support Indian Ocean area got in its time of need but see no mention and little support for the millions of Americans suffering right now. Something could at least be said on the front page of Avsim. We are a community that can show great support but have no mention of a crisis that's actually affecting all in the US. Where's the Flightsim fund being raised (I can donate to) for the people and simmers of the Gulf Coast of America that are displaced??? Our community is in this part of the world just like it is everywhere else... :-hmmm P.S. I would guess this is going to get moved to t…

  24. Hi all,I just heard on the Weather Channel the good Dr. telling us this storm has the second lowest pressure ever, (so far).Gilbert in '88 had the lowest, and had peak winds at 185mph.Katrina right Now has Max Sustained at 175mph with Gusts up to 215mph.This is a Major Category 5 Super Hurricane. If you are anywhere in its path, Please leave now. This is not some Minor Hurricane, this is the one they have feared for decades of Hitting Near New Orleans.Although the track is never 100% clear, wherever this things makes landfall won't have much left to see.I've assembled some links for our members to follow this massive tragedy in the making.
