Aerosoft EDDF Frankfurt Reviews?

There are 4 different variants of EDDF now:

  1. The free handcrafted version, if you own Premium Deluxe edition of MSFS.
  2. The freeware VirtualFRA version available on flightsim.to
  3. The freeware Aviotek Sim version available on Orbx
  4. The payware Aerosoft version

All have positives and negatives depending on what an individual values most from a scenery and how strong their PC is.

  • I like that and also share your view. Investing money in software for a hobby is something I always think about twice.

The performance "feedback" is holding me off buying this. FG OFF and 25 to 30 FPS at a high End PC is a nogo for me. I need a flyable and perforamcewise decent scenery because VR is demanding enough. The competitor one, bought via ORBX (not feelthere) is decent and good enough. So Aerosoft has "again" proofed not to take enough care for a quality standard. I my opinion this takes perormance into account! Even with all the gimmicks "off", users feedback is negative on performance (incl. feedback from BlackBox711 etc.). And they have high end maschines!

Aerosoft is not heading in the right direction (just my opinion, it may differ from others opinion of course).

Well at least on my rig, not entirely high end, but on the high end side, I get comparable baseline FPS on Aerosofts EDDF compared to Inibuilds EGLL, KJFK and KLAX. And 25FPS I only get with AI traffic (AIG at 75% for example), without AI traffic, FPS are above 50. But do I care? No, because I limit my FPS to 48 (24FPS before FG) via RTSS, and Lossless Scaling 3x makes 144FPS out of this. Even with AI traffic.

The main performance issue in Frankfurt is the surrounding area, especially the city. As soon as you use AutoFPS with a LOD reduced down to 50, even the last stutters are gone and it is perfectly smooth. But this also applies to any other addon scenery of a big hub very close to a big city, like the beforementioned EGLL, KLAX and KJFK.

It is simply impossible to build such a huge airport without major impact on performance if all eye candy stuff is turned on. Because of this, all those big hubs I mentioned come with a config tool allowing to turn gimmicks down.

I think so. But with all the good reviews, I think I'll drop the cash on Aerosoft's version imminently!

I am so tempted to purchase this scenery without waiting for a sale. I have seen so many posts over the past months about performance problems at certain payware airports, and yet when I come to test them on my late Jurassic PC, they run just fine. Airports like IniBuilds EGLL London Heathrow or Pyreegue EGPH Edinburgh v2. Yes, this is with AI planes disabled, but it is without any of those FG addons that are floating about, and with TLOD/OLOD @ 250/200 respectively.

I really want to give it a test drive....

As much as I'd like to do that, I'm conflicted due to the mixed reviews. I've never been disappointed by Jo Erlend's sceneries before though.

Hi Marcus,

On my server with Live Traffic and 2 displays my framerate differs from 16-36.

But I am using Lossless scaling x3 with vsync at monitor rate enabled so I see a continuous value of 60….

Yes.

The memorial is incomplete. It's only the Berlin Arch, no statics, etc. Sad that they ignored the details of this historic memorial. I have visited it many times while stationed there.

It looks like there should be a DC3 and a DC6 at that location. If the Aerosoft package does not include these, then I really hope that they are added at some point. It annoys the hell out of me when static aircraft like this are not modelled (or default assets are used to represent them).

This review sounds really weird to me in some of it parts, with quite a few contradictions that tell me there's an inherent lack of insight into how certain things work.

For instance, the complaint about "copy-pasting" paired with the complaint about performance is a bit eyebrow-worthy.

That's not "copy-pasting." That's optimization, basic assets and textures (like the weathering) are reused as much as possible throughout the airport exactly to save memory, and as such, keep performance acceptable. It's a common modeling technique that everyone who makes airports of this size does because that's the only way to make them somewhat performant.

Expecting a developer to not reuse textures in an airport this big means expecting something that will eat up memory like crazy if it'll run at all. Even just the idea that a reused weathering texture of different terminals detracts from the looks is simply a weird nitpick.

As the Editor-in-Chief of Simulation Daily why don't you make one?

Your knowledge and thoroughness demonstrated in your various posts would be much appreciated.

The reason is pretty simple. We don't do reviews. When we created the site, we consciously decided to leave it outside of our purview.

In the process of writing reviews (of games and flight sim add-ons) for 23 years, I've realized that reviews are much less useful than what they are given credit for, on top of that, they're becoming more and more subjective to the point that their usefulness has become very limited unless someone shares the personal values of the reviewer, without even mentioning that nowadays they're a marketing tool more than anything else.

Most reviewers nowadays focus on their own feelings more than the quality of the product (and while I understand complete objectivity is impossible, we've come to a point in which some level of it is not even sought, in many cases). On top of that, they lack the technical understanding to judge whether something is a flaw or simply how the candle is made. I've lost my eagerness to join that bunch, to be honest with you.

I'd rather keep people informed the best I possibly can, and hopefully, on the long run, help them acquire the tools to judge the quality of the product they are offered on their own.

Of course, there will always be people eager to do reviews and I'm sure there will always be an audience for them. That's great. That's simply not my aspiration anymore.

Well, I was going to buy this airport imminently, in fact I just held off long enough after reading some further feedback regarding performance. I've read a couple of posts from guys with quite beefy machines who were complaining about pretty poor performance. I have the Orbx (Aviotek) freeware version, which is perfectly adequate. But a big consideration for me is that I fly from two other airports close by, which are stunning, Brussels and Cologne. So I find it hard to justify buying this airport when I have two other beautiful renditions already in the area.

What's there to justify? Frankfurt is the biggest international hub in Europe after Heathrow. Brussels and Cologne are not. 😉

Thanks for your feedback Gerard! I can´t use FG with VR, so these numbers are to low for me. With Aviotek EDDF I get 60 FPS with FSLTL set to max 50 planes IFR. That´s a huge difference for my usecase.

Appreciated your feedback!
