WIN8 OS Forum

As simmers experiment with and adopt WIN8, we are sure there are going to be numerous questions regarding the use of FS and other sims in this new system. We have opened this forum for the community to focus on that OS and the impact of FS use within it.

  1. Greetings, I have been paying a lot of attention to the new Windows 8.1 release and its compatibility with FS2004 and FSX. Needless, to say that I was disappointed to discover in FS-Oriented forum posts that Windows 8.1 was incompatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator X (No word for FS2004 running in Windows 8.1). I will eventually update my PC OS to Windows 8.1 (64-bit) from Windows 7 and at least to me FS compatibility is paramount when it comes to a Windows installation given that I have been with the FS franchise for about 17+ years with it. I am aware that compatibility issues in Windows Developer Previews are quite common and I decided to give it some time befor…

Hi, As we all struggle for best performance, I thought I'd share my experience. It all started actually when I moved from Dx9 to Dx10 a month ago. Prior to that, I had set up my pc following the guidelines and experimented until I had found my happy medium. With DX10 I took a new look at my tweaks, read the AVSIM manual, the remarks at the forums and was doing my test run over and over again. The outcome has surprised me, but I guess W8 gets the credits; I have removed all my tweaks and get better frames per second now. No more Affinity Masks, Bufferpools, FFFT etc. W8 handles it very nicely. Give it a try, remove your tweaks and make a known …

I know this has probably been covered in other forums and I will be grateful for any links and advice that anyone could provide. I have two computers that I am thinking of linking up running FSX/P3D on one computer and weather/ATC/Other programs on the second. I can give specs on each machine if necessary. I'm also thinking of wiping each machine and putting a clean copy of WIN8 on each. Are there any guides published on the forum to help me with this project? Thanks. Bob Jones

  4. Hi, This is where I had FSX installed with Windows 7 Home Premium. I have all latest drivers, and firmware downloaded to desktop but cannot install on 8.1. Have tried everything, but nothing works. Have searched everywhere and have not found a viable solution. Any of you gentlemen have a solution? Kind regards,

Since I am having continous problems with joystick disconnects on windows 8, I would like to know if I can install Windows 7 and have a dual boot system. I have installed Fsuipc and have also modified the USB power options to no avail. Any help appreciated. Ron

I have Windows 8. The UAC Slider is all the way down. I'm using Microsoft Flight Simulator with add ons. Everything related is in the (X86) Program . I'm currently putting the items in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode. Everything is also in 'System' under Security. I'm having problems with the Sim and am wondering if the set up I just described is a part of the problem? Thanks in advance

Problem # 1 > I can't control the sound in FSX. I went to the sound controls and turn them all the way down. Later I installed accu-feel , turned the sound off, still hearing a loud engine and ATC. Problem # 2 > After installing GSX and jfk from FS Dreamteam , I tried to install Vancouver Airport also from FS Dreamteam and couldn't get into window mode. I have Windows 8. Everything is in Windows 7 in compatability Mode and in the ( X86 Program Folder. My UAC Slider is all the way down.

  9. Installed Win8.1 (64bit) today, everything went ok. Now I see, that I do not have a DX10 Preview Checkbox any more!!!??? Haven't made any installations or setups between installing 8.1 and starting FSX. I have a GTX580. I recognised that with win8.1 the latest driver 327.23 was installed. I reverted back to one two versions before, but that doesn't help. Before 8.1 everything was ok, of course, and I was happy with Steve's DX10 fixer. I checked DirectX Installation, says, everything is on the latest. No need to update. I also removed FSX.cfg and let FSX create a new one, but no success. Started FSX in several compatibility modes, I have admin rights, I h…

Anyone else ran the Windows 8.1 upgrade as of yet? I had Windows 8 x64 and FSX working fairly well, except for some FTX related module crashes.. Now i'm getting errors loading certain addons, like FSFlyingSchool 2013.. getting an automation error when I hit connect.. possibly fsuipc or simconnect related.. i reinstalled fsuipc and uninstalled simconnect.. then tried to run the simconnect installer.. it starts to load and disappears.. This is just one example so far. I believe these issues were expected though.. Windows 8.1 is not a true update in that sense.. as it does an inplace upgrade.. renaming windows to windows.old and trying "its best" to migrate …

Hi , had a motherboard probdem, so I want to change it and upgrade to SDD and Windows 8. See that there are many problems and before making any changes I would like to see other opinions. My idea is to leave the Window7 OS in the Bios and also an option for W.8. I have FSX installed in a separate HDD (drive G) and W7 OS on another (drive C). Now I would like to install W 8 on a separate SSD but copy also drive G (fsx) to a separate SSD together with other flight sims. In the Bios I could switch from 7 to OS 8 without loosing anything. So I could play FSX from OS 7 or 8 and choose also if I want the HDDS G or the new SSD. This would give me an opportunity to test b…

  18. So, this is interesting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2885482 Recently released from MS. Perhaps the one programmer who's been assigned to working on this for seven years finally figured it out? Dare we hope?

Because of health problems, I had to stop my flight sim habit back when I was running Win XP. (I am now 70 years). I have FS9 and FSX and had a marginal computer for FSX (FS9 ran pretty good at medium graphic settings with no traffic). I want to get back into it but I am very concerned about running FSX on new computers with win7 or win8. I do not play any of the younger generation's multi-player high power requirement games...just FS. I have the CH yolk and pedals (usb models) and multi engine throttle set. Since all this stuff was set to run under Win XP, am I faced with the need for new hardware which I can't really afford? I used to build my own computers so…

After installing Windows 8.1 an rerunning the Windows Performance Index my graphics rating went from 8.1 to 8.4 using the same 2 680 GTX GPUs in SLI mode. This would be a great thing except that I had to roll back to Windows 8 as not all of my system drivers had updated 8.1 versions yet. Still a good sign IMO. Regards jja

  22. So I just recently upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7 and did a clean install of FSX. Now I am just getting the dreaded random fatal errors. I have tried adding the UIAutomationCore.dll, running fsx as an administrator, eliminating my add ons etc. Sometimes if I go to settings and then go back to fly now I get one, sometimes when FSX boots i'll get one, and just randomly in flight I may get them. Could anyone provide any insite for me on this thanks. Hello everybody, a while ago (7 months+ i think) I purchased Windows 8 but quickly switched back to windows 7 because of all the issues with joysticks for FSX and so on. Now, since it's been a while and I switched to XPX and P3D V2 is coming "soon" i'm thinking of switching back. I did really like it unlike most people. I'm just curious on whether I will still have joystick issues or anything else. Thanks! P.S I have been hearing quite a lot about Win8 8.1. If i re install Win8 should I update to it?

  24. Help! I have Windows 8 with 3 x 24" HD monitors and just installed the Gold Edition. I can't find [Display] section in fsx.cfg!!! I have looked everywhere! I have permission to view hidden files and folders. Trying to add or edit the "WideViewAspect" to =True. All answers I have found by searching relate to windows 7 and everyone seems to be able to find it there, but I can't find it! Please help!!!

I read a report that as of Win 8.1 GA, MS will no longer offer a "system builder" or "upgrade" license / reduced price sku. There may be some introductory pricing for Win 8.1 but if not then the only real option is "Win 8.1 pro". So if you want either of those Win 8 licenses best buy now (8.1 upgrade is free). scott s. .
