Upgrading Windows 8.1 to Windows 10

Woohoo! Windows Joystick Disconnects Conclusively Solved!

If you've been tearing your hair out over Win 8.1 or 10 joystick and throttle disconnects in P3D, especially with Saitek products, this could be for you.

I stumbled across a cure that, so far, has been absolutely, 100-percent effective. This works when disabling selective suspend in device manager does not. It works when changing power settings in Control Panel does not. It works when the problem presents itself in Windows 8.1 OR 10. Here goes.

Search the registry for this string, EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled=1, where the device it refers to corresponds to a joystick, pedals, throttle quadrant and so on.

Change it to read EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled=0

Reboot.

Smile.

Bear in mind, though, this needs to be redone every single frickin' time you upgrade Windows, as the Windows install stomps on those Registry keys. Sorry "resets them to the 'proper' values."

I recently noticed, after downloading a free game from "Windows Store", a slowdown in performance on my system. I found that turning off Windows Store during my simming sessions makes a difference

Click START, type GPEDIT.MSC and press the Enter key. (if it does not show up, see below)

Expand USER CONFIGURATION > ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES > WINDOWS COMPONENTS > STORE.

Set TURN OFF THE STORE APPLICATION to Enabled

This can always be reverted if you perceive no difference, but I have, my system is much more compliant now in all applications, I used to see hesitations when I typed, for instance, every once in a while.

Hey everyone,

I believe I have solved the joystick woes with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I have done 2 days of stress testing FSX and P3D with multiple installs of the program and OS, and I haven't had a disconnect yet.

Before I go further - I want to give my thanks to certain individuals who have helped me and inspired me to solve this joystick annoyance.

3) Peter Dowson's FSUIPC utility (it got me through the periods when no joystick fix was avialable)

4) Orbx Team - Thank you Global and your Tips and Tricks Forum section

6) Ranak Jones of "Rogue's Guide to Acquisition: Principles of Final Frontier" for sending me a spare XFX 6970 for my system and pointing me to Windows 8 Registry to search for USB Device GUIDs potential errors

Testing:

1) FullScreen FSX in Eyefinity Mode (5760x1200) for 3 hours+

2) Windowed FSX in triple screen mode and 1920x1200 for 4 hours+

3) Multiple active windows on top of FSX Windowed in background for 4 hours+

4) Testing was done with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports

FSX testing was in Win 8.1 and 8, and P3D 1.4 was in Win 8.

My System

Cpu: i5-750 (intel 1156 cpu) overclocked to 4.1Ghz

Memory: 8GB DDR3

Storage: 1xSamsung 830 SSD at Sata III (Main drive), Intel 80GB SSD at Sata II speeds, 1 TB hitachi mechanical HDD at sata II <- all connected to PCIEx4 Sata III controller)

OS - Windows 8 Pro Clean install / Windows 8.1 Clean Install

Windows 8 Solution - (FSX / Prepar3d 1.4)

1) Make sure power management features are off or set to high

2) Most important setting is USB Selective Suspend Setting is Disabled (we all knew this)

Honestly, that setting does not disable USB selective suspend in Windows 8 (this is for Windows 8 only), like it promises.

The power management on USB devices is set to Selective Suspend

Please see your HID Devices, USB Input Device and USB Root Hub Devices - They are STILL set to Suspend.

You have to turn OFF the manual power savings one by one to all USB Devices/Compositive Devices and the all the USB Root Hubs (this is v.important). If it says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and is checked then please UNCHECK it

This was discovered when I was searching for Joystick UID's in Windows 8 based on Ranak's suggestion. This is where stuff gets weird for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I am no registry expert, but GUID's for my joystick is half correct and half backwards as compared to one listed in FSUIPC's ini file

So for some reason half of the GUID is backwards in Registry - I do not know if that is normal or not but that led me to search all the usb devices/ports in Device Manager. Here I found all the power saving features were somehow enabled when Windows Power Management is explicitly set to disable.

Recap

So for Windows 8 Pro ONLY - Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and make sure Windows Power management also has Selective Suspend set to Disabled.

Prepar3d 1.4 - Please have JOYSTICKS=1 in [CONTROLS] in P3D.cfg (more on this later)

Windows 8.1 Pro (RTM Version) - FSX TEST

No joystick disconnects with 1 Setting change Only - Joystick works in Windows 8.1 Pro

I am seeing that all devices still have the USB Power Management check in windows 8.1 but in FSX with PNW, and Bowerman addon, Carenado B200 - Joystick did not disconnect. The only crash I got was from latest FSUIPC 4.92.

If in Windows 8.1 you have joystick disconnects, then just turn off all those power management features as listed in for Windows 8.

I hope this helps everyone - as Windows 8.1 Pro definitely works fantastic with no joysticks issues so far. And Windows 8 works with all power management features individually turned off in all those sections listed.

I installed some airports that put such anyone here into my C drive: Microsoft C ++ 2005 Redistributable althoughI have installed it on my D drive. And now I can not instalere rest of minne other flight simulator prudukter because of my C drive is full. Can I delete the Microsoft C ++ 2005 redistributable without something happens to the airport. I have microsoft virsual C ++ 2013 Redistributable (x64) and (x86)

I have also windows 8.1

Saitek MultiPanel Display Not Working with Windows 8.1

I posted this in the joystick thread, but thought I would highlight it here for others that may have the same problem. The Saitek multipanel LED display no longer works for me in Windows 8.1. The buttons and flap switch and knobs work fine, but the display is dark. Even a reset of the USB or the computer does not fix it. Nor does using a USB 2.0 input. After searching other forums, this problem has been reported for Xplane and P3D too, so it is not an FSX issue. It is also not driver dependent, as users have experienced it with both SPAD and Saitek drivers. I emailed Saitek tech support about it. They say that windows 8.1 is causing them a lot of problems and that the side effects "were not expected" but it does not sound too likely that a fix is coming soon. They basically are blaming MS. If anyone has this problem and has found a solution, please post.

Windows explorer and .EXE files

Having a very annoying situation in which any downloaded files, for example, but not limited to ALL lhsimulations sceneries, Just Flight demo aircraft, or full-versions, etcetera. When clicked on, the cursor will rotate, as normal, but then the entire Windows Explorer freezes and stays that way for hours. After this, it just does not run at all, as if I have never clicked on it. I try restarting Explorer in the task manager but it does not come back after that so I have a blank screen afterwards. Any advice?

I's only been happening for the past few days but I do not recall installing anything recently.

Hi, I've been having an issue the past few flights. During my long hauls, the joystick will randomly disappear from FSX. This happens while the plane is on autopilot. I can still see the joystick is connected to the computer through the windows "usb game controllers" menu, but all I can select in FS is "mouse yoke". If I unplug and plug it back in it still doesnt show up in flightsim. Only upon re starting the sim can I use the joystick again. I also use the EZdok camera addon if this has anything to do with it.

HD Airport Graphics no terminal at destination

Anyone encountered the loss of all airport buildings, i.e. terminals, hangers, etc.? The best I've had is the roofs appeared but none of the other objects such as vehicles and jetways. The global textures on the airport surfaces are there but no buildings.

This product is nice and I especially like the taxiway signs but I'm sure there is a simple solution, anyone?

I've only encountered this arriving at default airports, no 3rd party sceneries.

Getting low CPU usage in FSX but still below target fps.

Hi guys,

So basically I upgraded my PC a few weeks back. FSX is all set up now with a bunch of addons. I get low CPU usage on my i7-4930K of between 40-60% on 5 of the 6 cores, the other 1 mostly idles. However, i'm still only obtaining frame rates of 20 or so, possibly less whilst in London with the PMDG 737 NGX. However, there seems to be little pattern to my frame rates and they can go as low as 15 but up as high has 32 although it does seem proportional to my CPU usage percentages. With ground scenery shadows off my frame rates are significantly higher so I keep them off generally while most other sliders are all the way to the right except for the traffic which is completely disabled. My temps are around 55 degrees celsius at this load and max out around 75 on a CPU stress test. If FSX is getting low frame rate, why doesn't it just go and make use of the extra CPU percentages that are available? I know you can unpark CPU cores but apparently this significantly reduces life of the CPU. Would you recommend this? I use affinity mask 1364 as recommended by an affinity mask calculator for a hex-core CPU with hyperthreading. I am aiming for a stable 30 fps in big cities as landing becomes difficult at lower FPS. I bought all these new upgrades to get this frame rate and I'm annoyed that FSX won't even use the system resources I've given it, even when setting fsx.exe to high/realtime in task manager.

On another note, I can't overclock past 4.5Ghz on my i7-4930k or my PC just becomes unstable and I get BSOD. My CPU VCore is 1.4V currently. Here's my system specs:

Hi everyone,

I am just dropping in to report on my findings with FSX running in the Windows 8 environment. I decided to take the initiative and spend most of my day installing Windows 8 and getting FSX setup in this new OS.

Overall, FSX seems to behave similarly and doesn't have any issues cooperating in the new Metro environment. One thing that I also immediately noticed was that FSX starts much more quickly than it did in the Windows 7 environment. Keep in mind that I do have almost all of my regular addons installed at this point.

Also, when moving from windowed mode to full-screen, FSX seems to be more responsive in this regard. The sim also seems to be a bit less choppy and seems to be more smooth as a whole.

One thing that instantly caught my attention were the warning dialogs that appear when you install an addon that makes an entry in the DLL.XML or the EXE.XML. The warning dialog fades in and out much more methodically. These little things are improvements in the OS that make it a much more enjoyable experience.

Win 8.1 +FSX + multiple Monitor issue

Hey guys hope someone here can point me in the right direction. I am going to preface this question with the following statement, my FSX setup works fine in Windows 7.

Here is the issue. I have Windows 8.1 with the 4-9 update installed, I have a primary monitor that runs at 1920x1080 and a secondary that runs at 1280x1024. I have them set correctly in the FSX setup, (verified in the FSX.cfg file as 0.0 and 0.1) but when I start FSX in fullscreen the main display (1920x1080) doesn't fill the whole screen, only about the 1280x1024 of the primary is displayed while the secondary is fine. If I set both screen resolutions to the same thing (1280x1024 because the secondary will not match the primary resolution it works, but only at 1280x1024. My question is, is there a way to have FSX in Windows 8.1 recognize the different resolutions? As I said the same hardware in Windows 7 works without issue. This is in full screen mode that the issue presents itself.

Solving a Stuttering issue in FSX on Win8.1

I know I may be behind the times here but I've searched everywhere to find a threat that speaks of the best ballance in tweeks for FSX running on W8.1. I know about the joystick issue and have the registered copy o fFSUICP so thats not an issue, what I'm getting now is periodic stutters that last 3-5 seconds periodically, almost like the windows resourses are being sucked up durring those moments. My specs are as follows:

Hi,

Im hoping someone can help me here.

I was previously running Win7 and using Opencockpits Efis and MCPv3 Plug and play Modules. I have been using SIOC and OCB4A as the interface and have never had any problems with it working.

I have now upgraded my rig and have Windows 8.1. I installed everything as required and my EFIS works perfectly. My MCP lights up and all the buttons work with FSX, e.g. F/D, V NAV, APP etc but for some reason the knobs/encoders will not register within FSX with the PMDG NGX. When i turn the knobs the altitude/heading etc will change on the physical MCP itself but it does not register within FSX.

I contacted OC and they said it is a Windows 8 issue??/

Has anyone had this problem and fixed it?

Any help is appreciated!

Now that Internet Explorer is supposed to be obsolete. What is the recommended replacement? How do we prevent malicious intruders from messing with our setup. I do have Panda security,but still get interference from pop ups

LAN settings

For some reason, my LAN settings now want a proxy server and won't connect to the internet. I can fix this by resetting from Internet tools, however it keeps reverting back to a proxy server as the mood takes it.

Any permanent fix for this?

Reinstalling Windows 8.1?

I have run FSX in Windows 8.1 without problems for months, but I am now in trouble.

Windows is just not booting up anymore.

I did some troubleshooting and googling around and this is what I found:

1) My hard drive is fine and working (I can see it and read it from prompt command, in Windows RE)

2) In the error log file I read: "windows 8 boot manager failed to find os loader"

3) I understand some "boot sector" are corrupted...

My Question/s:

How disruptive for FSX and add-ons is it to reinstall Windows 8.1 itself?

If I do that, assuming it will fix my problem, will I find all other files/settings related to FSX and add-ons as before, or would I have to re-install (please nooooo) those?

Does anybody here ave any experience with that?

Other suggestions on how to tackle this error message above?

Some Facts:

I have a "Windows recovery CD" that I got from PC manufacturer (Win 8 came pre-installed), which I think would allow me a re-install.

I Have installed my FSX and add-ons on a separate SSD (which I also see from prompt command), but I noticed that bits of files with add-ons-related names are still embedded in default HD...

I have the OS on default HD.

I see a D: called "Windows" and a X: called "boot" (probably a partition of my HD, since SSD has no partitions)

Please help??

I have recently got a new computer for my birthday and it is a very powerful conputer with specs that would run FSX really great, the problem is, it has windows 8.1 on it and I use Fsx deluxe which is not compatible with windows 8, also I use PMDG 737ngx which is compatible with win8 but it requires fsx sp2 and the sp2 isn't compatible with win8. So my question is, what should I do? Do I buy Fsx standard (which is compatible with win8) or is there a way to get windows 7 on a new computer because I don't think you can by it anymore

A clean re-install?

For reasons I am not going to detail (you will find them in separate post in same forum, if curious), I decided to reinstall Windows 8.1 on my FSX PC. Before I actually pull the trigger, I am trying to avoid silly mistakes by asking here about your experiences.

I currently have a standard HD with Windows 8.1 installed on it, and a separate SSD with FSX_Acceleration (with SP2) and a bunch of add-ons:

- ORBX products (Global_base, Global_vector, OpenLC, various FTX_terrains, various FTX airports)

- FSGlobal 2010 mesh

- ASN

- REX4+soft_clouds

- UT2

- Carenado planes

- A2A planes

- EzDok

- IR5_tracker

- FS_Instant_Approach

The main question is: What would be the cleanest way to reinstall all this?

The second question is: Is there a way I could make this less painful, for example by keeping FSX and Add-ons already installed on SSD and just re-installing Windows on HD?

The final question is: what should I really avoid doing (typical mistakes)?

FSX Crashes when switching to desktop

Hi all,

I've noticed an issue lately with FSX crashing when using alt-tab, or clicking anywhere in the dekstip in windowed mode. It seems FSX does not get along well with Windows 8/8.1's desktop. If I make it to the desktop and the Sim doesn't crash, trying to switch back into the Sim always results in a black screen, forcing me to end the flight. On occasion,I'll accidentally hit the windows key instead of the alt, which causes a crash or black screen. Is anyone else experiencing this issue with Windows 8.1, and/or is there a known fix?

All of a sudden I am unable to take Screenshots in my FSX\Gold installation in windows 8 64 using the "v" key? If I change from Full Screen to Windowed mode then I can.But what changed?

I've seen I am not alone in this matter, but is there an easy solution, I can use the "Print Screen command" but that only takes one picture at a time...
