WIN8 OS Forum
As simmers experiment with and adopt WIN8, we are sure there are going to be numerous questions regarding the use of FS and other sims in this new system. We have opened this forum for the community to focus on that OS and the impact of FS use within it.

Since I installed the Windows 8.1 preview (x64) tonight, FSX no longer starts. It's CTD 20 seconds into startup. I'm starting to see some buzz on a few forums, including Microsoft's TechNet (?) forum and many have the exact same issue. Just thought I'd throw this out there and maybe save some pain of cleaning out 8.1 ... If you've upgraded already and are experience (or not) this issue, I'd love to compare system specs.

A couple of threads here in Hagar chat (about windows 8 being hard to interface) recommended Start8. I purchased it ($5) and use it all the time. Anyways I have resisted updating win8 to win8.1 fearing 8.1 might ruin the way Start8 operates. Can anybody here who had Start8 in Win8 comment if there will be a problem using Start8 under Windows 8.1? Thanks.

Hi I have the pmdg 737ngx for fsx and everything is running smoothly on windows 8.1. Now, I'm really like the ''queen of the skies 747'' by pmdg and I'm planning on getting it soon. Have anyone got any personal experience with it on Windows 8.1 Cheers Marcus Grunnesjö

Hi, Which versions of FSX (Standard, Deluxe, Gold) are compatible with Windows 8.1? Link below says not Deluxe, but this sounds wrong to me... Also, link below mentions "version 10," but when shopping on eBay I mostly can't see a version number listed. Were there earlier versions? Can I tell from packaging? Thanks! --Prahas http://flyawaysimulation.com/news/4692/

Okeydokes....So I am finally taking the plunge and getting a new drive for Win8 so I can support it on the products I work on. I got 2 questions: 1: What version of Win8 should I go for? I see 8.1 full version, system builder, pro system builder, Pro full version....Which one is the 8.1 equivalent to Win7 ultimate 64? 2: Those of you who have Win8 and have everything working properly, what are the steps to setting it up so things behave? Thanks JB

How are aircraft config files edited in Windows 8, such as when adding new aircraft textures? Apparently the old system using a text editor does not exist in OS 8.

Hi I have been making my own flight simulator area. I am planing on making it with 3 monitors so I have 2 side views and 1 straight out the front. My question is what type or hardware would I need to run it on high quality, so it runs smoothly. I would need to know what GPU to buy and how much ram does the computer need to have and what ever else you can think of to get this running nicely. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I started having problems, maybe just perceived, a while back. After doing a FSX reinstall I started finding myself locked out of making changes to a few files. ie: FSX.cfg, EXE.xml and SaiFlightSimX.xml. Seems there were a few others. Anyhow I looked at their properties and saw they were read only? I am the admin and have never had a problem with them before. So I attempted to change the attributes but was denied by the OS? Curious, I don't recall anything like this before. So, being very late one night, I went to C: and gave everyone full permissions in properties\security of C:\. Well, that worked very well; except it appears I gave everyone authority! I…

Hello Fellas, So I just built a new X99 gaming rig with Dual EVGA GTX 980's Superclocked, I know FSX only uses one card, that's not an issue. I installed FSX just fine without any addons yet. I noticed that sometimes all of a sudden the screen goes black but I hear the game sound in the background then the screen comes back again. It happens randomly. I'm not sure if this is a Graphics Card issue or an OS issue. Should I get back to Windows 7? FSX was running perfectly on my old X58 rig with a GTX 580 1.5GB card. I'm confused.

Hi I put another forum with a similar question about FS9 but just wanted to find out also about FSX. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/439987-fs9-on-windows-81/#entry2970490%C2'> I am about to get 8.1 on my iMac (boot camp) and need to know firstly if it will be able to run FSX, i heard because of it being out of date, FSX will not run. I really hope this isnt the case as it will mean I have wasted money on expansion for the game. The second question is that a lot of people say that although the standard FSX will not run, if i go for the gold package with deluxe and acceleration included i will have no issue running FSX as they are more up to date. Hopefull…

I created this account for the sole purpose of seeing if the AVSIM braintrust had the answer to my problem. I didn't find it so I want to share it with everyone. The situation: Brand new Windows 8 x64 laptop with great specs FSX Deluxe installed with absolutely no issue I wanted to tweak my home airport The problem: The FSX SDK is required for some 3rd party addonsNo big deal, right? The SDK is included on the FSX install disk. Except (DUN DUN DUN) - The bleeping installer for the RTM SDK would simply not successfully run. Every time the installer throws error "1628: Failed to complete installation." You can Google your heart out about Windows 8, FSX SDK…

Hi all, This maybe a daft question but here goes. I've been given i copy of FSX acceleration and currently just have the deluxe version installed with SP 1 and 2, so i was going to do a full clean install and start a fresh as i have a couple of scenery issues that wont go away. But is there certain add-ons you would add first before others so as to avoid any add-ons working against each other? The add-ons i have to install are: FTX England Aerosoft Dublin Airport UK2000 Leeds Bradford REX 4 Aivlasoft EFB (Data Provider) Aerosoft A318/A319 Areosoft A320/A321 PMDG 737 I also have a few other add-ons running on a separate system. FSinn Active sk…

Just wondering if anyone has come across the following problem. I decided to reintsall FSX Deluxe on my e drive (where it normally lives). Unfortunately no amount of persuasion will work. The installation disk hangs near the beginning at the point where it says 'Removing applications.....' Ive tried the following (as recommended here and on various other sites): 1) Renaming C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\InstallShield to Installshied1 so Windows 8 builds another. 2) Changing compatibility mode on the Installshield IDriver, IDriver2 and IDriverT to Windows 8. Also ran them as Administrator. 3) Attempted installation with UAC switched off. 4) Attemp…

At first I figured that it was something to do with that I forced a restart once, but it didn't save the position of my stuff, I even had it set to skip the start thing. That is now back, am I doing something wrong, or is there a virus of some sort? Edit: 8.1

Hey, I am very apprecitative of Pete Dowson's FSUIPC, as it is the lifesaver for many things in FSX/Prepar3d. I only used it for the Joystick support as it helped me (and so many countless fsx/p3d users) to avoid the dreadful joystick disconnects. While I was in the process of updating my P3D optimization doc (old version is on the Prepar3d section), I decided to take a one more look at the joystick issue, and I may have found a very elegant solution. Windows 8 is super fast in desktop mode (with classic shell as start button) and I do like the SSD optimization by default in it. There are some quirks in it, but for the most part everything works great in des…

Hi all! I had no problem running FSX on highest settings on Win 7. On Windows 8.1 Pro x64 I'm getting only about 20 fps, when I lower settings, it does not help, fps will increase only a little bit (about 5 fps). System specs are following: Fujitsu Siemens E754 laptop, i5 4200M 2.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, 2x 128GB SSD, Intel HD 4600 graphics. Any ideas guys? If duplicate topic, please don't get angry, I suck at searching. TY, Daniel

Hello all, I am currently looking in to getting a new system specifically for FSX. I've decided to buy a pre-built as I am very busy this summer with work, PPL training, and preparing for University this fall; thus, I do not have the time to learn how to build and overclock my own system. The point is, this system that I have decided on runs Windows 8.1, which I've heard mixed reviews of. Searching around AVSIM and various other forums often turns up mixed results for me; some people have no issues whatsoever, and some people have horrifying CTDs and Joystick issues...but there never seems to be a clear message as to whether or not FSX generally runs stable on 8.1. Does …

My Outlook e-mail has recently stopped, and I'm following another lead that requires me to disable ipv6 (my ISP is Comcast, it's the incoming mail server, mail.comcast.net). This follows having to change my internal router to bridging mode... I'm trying to do a registry change: HKEY_LOVAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP6\Parameters, create a new DWORD "DisabledComponents with ffffffff. What I'm seeing is that there is already a Disabled Components folder in the above path, with a value 0x000008e, and I can't create two folders with the same name. Can anyone shed any light on what the existing folder (DWORD) is doing? Also, anyone success…

Just wanted to ask if the Win81/Joystick Problem has been solved - Please, understand, that I did not wanted to go through that 52 pages 'megathread' here. I would be really happy if anybody could confirm that P3Dv2x, Windows 8.1 and Saitek X52 work together now. Cheers, Harry
