WIN8 OS Forum

As simmers experiment with and adopt WIN8, we are sure there are going to be numerous questions regarding the use of FS and other sims in this new system. We have opened this forum for the community to focus on that OS and the impact of FS use within it.

I though I'd share few thing I've learned from getting FSX up and running on my Windows 8 PC. At the moment I have FSX running smoother and better graphically than I did on Windows 7. I'll try and add to this if I encounter anything new. Lesson #1: A Clean Install is Still the Best Option What Happen: I preformed an in-place upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8. After a fresh install of FSX I had missing textures on planes, terrain, and a SimConnect error. I tired to reinstall SimConnect with no success. I resorted to deleting all of the SimConnect folders from the WinSxS folder and reinstalling FSX. The reinstall fixed my missing terrain textures and missi…

  2. I am having this weird issue with FSInn where the PTT stops working after X number of minutes pass in flight. I know its not my microphone because when this happens a) I can use my mic in skype, B) recording tests in windows' own control panel works. When this happens I no longer hear the beep you'd hear normally when you press your PTT key. I am desperate. Please help.

I have completed my fresh install of Windows 8. So far FSX has never run better nor looked better. I run an eyefinity 3+1 setup and had some problems in Windows 7 with that setup that has been solved with Windows 8. However, I have been able to install every pay-ware add-on with no issues what so ever except Just Flight installers that use the activeMARK security. The installer starts but as soon as the activemark splash logo appears nothing else happens. I am suspecting widows 8 thinks it is malware and is refusing the install. I have turned off UAC, anti-virus/malware and ran it as administrator and in all compatability modes but no luck. I have sent an email to J…

I have just installed Windows 8 Pro (64), and used the "Custom" option so that I could select another partition on my HD that I had created especially for this install. I have read some articles that explain how to do this, and it appeared to be rather simple- install to separate drive/partition then after the install is done I could get the multi-boot menu if my original OS was Windows 7 (which it is). The Windows 8 installation went well, however now that I am done with the install, when I re-start the PC it goes directly into Windows 8 without the multi-boot menu. How do I get to the multi-boot menu? Is there some key combination required to do this, maybe? (a…

Hello all- Newbie to the site since I have not had FS game since 2002 came out. Anyways I have browsed over various posts on this and other sites and cant seem to get a consensus on compatibility for Windows 8, as well as a clean set of install (specific to W8) install instructions to avoid these dreaded error codes. Some seem to have issues, some not, and I am by no means a computer expert, not to mention the learning curve when I go from XP to Windows 8 on the new laptop. My new "midlevel" laptop: 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ i5-3210M processor 6GB RAM (expandable to 8) Intel HD 4000 graphics Just looking for a maybe a little direction on any insta…

Hi Guys: I have an upgraded Win8 pro 32bit system and have successfully installed FS2004 with the 9.1 update. It works thus far. Only issue is the black screen for the 3d model on A/C selection. Not sure why at the moment. I did install it to another drive and folder (D:\FS2004) rather than MS's preference. Next issue will be to install software for Saitek X-52 joystick and Pedals. Also FSBuild, FSUIPC, ASE, and the more complicated aircraft from PMDG, Level-d, and Wilco. As well as scenery up the wazu. Hope it works. I will post the results as they occur in hopes of a successful upgrade. Don Brashears

Is anyone having an issue with Fraps in Windows 8? I'm getting a lot of black screen pictures after my rebuild, and it was pretty flawless in Win7. Not sure what to try outside of reinstalling graphics drivers, and that did not resolve the issue. Everything else seems to be just fine.

  10. I'm looking to upgrade to Windows 8 64 bit from Windows 7 64 bit. It's not clear to me which upgrade of Windows 8 to order that will guarantee Windows 8 64 bit. I was wondering if a colleague here would offer some advice on how to select the right version. If you go to the Microsoft site or to Amazon or any of those, none of them specify which version they are offering. Is it just automatic now? B) Lee

Microsoft is offering an early purchase offer for W8 $15.00US. However, it appears that it is only good if you bought a PC, such as a Dell or HP, etc.) that was pre-configured with Windows. Has any one tried this with a "homemade PC"? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/upgrade-offer

Looks like Win 8 Pc version release is firming up. Special pricing availble through Jan 31 2013. There's only 2 "feature" versions: Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro Unless you buy a pre-loaded PC, the only install options are upgrade (from XP SP3, Vista, or Win7) or system-builder OEM full (unless you have access to some sort of volume delivery method). Pricing is set so Win 8 Pro is the same as Win 7 Home Premium, so in effect you are getting Win 7 Ultimate comparable at the Win 7 HP price. The "sale" prices are for upgrade Win 8 Pro, either physical DVD+packaging (USD$70) or download from MS (USD$40). Of course for desktop apps, it isn't clear what you are…

  13. We are happy to announce that we have opened the WIN 8 OS forum for those of you that are new owners, or have questions, of this OS. Many of the new desktops and laptops come with WIN8 today, and there are sure to be users who will have questions about adding their FS and add-on's to their new system.
