Hi guys!Well I'm returning to the sim after being gone for a loooong time. I had created a thread but in the wrong forum. I guess I'll repost here. Whats everyone's opinion on the Dell XPS 17 I purchased? I'll be sticking with a laptop for at least a year, the I am planning on buying a desktop to make my primary machine. Being an emt and working 24 hour shifts, something portable but still capable was very important to me. I plan on loading fs9 and I know this will run it with out a doubt in my mind. I'm curious to see what fsx will be like. I know not to expect full sliders, but I hope that after tweaking the laptop and the sim itself that I will be able to have decent a…

HelloI did some test with FSXMark07 with default clock at 3800 mhz. Also overclocked my pc to 5.0 ghz but strangely enough no difference! Even lower! In table below you can see my results. What is wrong with my new pc or testing method ? I use Triplehead to Go with 3x 22"Used Limiter = fps limiter limited to 30fps( internally fsx unlimited)nvidia means: did i use a nvidia inspecter profile with all settings "nickn" mentions to make for fsx like AA etc

I'm looking at buying a new laptop and I've found the one I want. However, there are two variations of the laptop, very close in price:One has an i5 480M and the other has an i7 740QMThe i5 is a dual core @ 2.66Ghz and the i7 is a quad core @ 1.7Ghz - although I understand "Turbo Boost" allows the cores on both CPUs to increase to up to 2.9Ghz when other cores are idle. All other specs - RAM, GPU, etc are the same.Which would be the better choice for FSX?Thanks for any replies/advice.

Newegg has put out 3 excellent videos with details on how to build a computer. He builds two systems using 2500K and 2600K with both Nvidia and AMD video cards, aftermarket and default heat sink, uses Corsair 650D and Coolermaster cases. Lots here applicable to FSX builds. Will be putting together a new build this week. ASUS P8P67 Deluxe R3 MB with an I7-2600 BX80623I72600K. I will be using the Noctua NH-D14 cooler and wasn't able to reuse my existing 6GB Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 triple channel memory because of the high cooling fins on the dimms. The salesman convinced me to buy 8GB Corsair XMS3 CMX8GX3M2A2000C9 which is 9-10-9-27. I plan to try get it up to around 4.5G which seems promising looking at this forum. Will I be okay? Really don't want to drive the 2 hour trip back to Atlanta to exchange them.Yeah, gave up trying to up my 920, think it was the H-50 cooler. Thanks for any helpRick S.

Hi,I am a house builder about to retire after 40 years on the tools and finally building my last house for wife and I. My other passion I have dabbled in is Flight sim since Bruce Artwick days. PMDG are my love, but need a great computer to fly them as they were intended.I am pretty well sorted(I think)on the components for the computer, just not the Motherboard. My build plan at present is to build a machine which I can OC to some point that the machine is still VERY stable. Some of you guys seem to have this well under control? When I finally get machine built and running, OC will be my next learning curve.Build Plan.....Use my Armor+ case(lots of fans in it)WIN7 64BIT …

I need a new PSU for my overclocked Q9650 and GTX285 system (see the spec below) for under £150. What sort of wattages are people running and what wattage / make would you recommend. I was looking at the Corsair TX950 950W. I'd like a PSU that can run an overclocked Core i7 system with a high end GeForce series 400 or 500 graphics card, and ideally, also has a 140mm or 120mm fan that I can easily replace if needed (rather than an awkward 135mm fan). Thanks for you're replies in advance.

I had to rebuild my computer since my motherboard died, and I replaced my psu. Now, after reinstalling Windows, both CPU Z and HWmonitor are not correctly reporting my vcore. When idle, vcore is at 1.056 and when full load overclocked, CPU Z shows 1.06, the same as HWmonitor. Any suggestions? I have applied the same oc settings as the old motherboard (it was the same model, but not B3 revision), so I should be getting ~1.31 vcore under load.I also seem to be getting errors sometimes as CPU Z starts up.

Hi guys, since some days I suffer from one very weird RAM behaviour. When I fly FS9, it sometimes gets very laggy and the RAM usage is near to 100%. This happened a few minutes ago: The FS got very laggy and I tried to get it minimized to see what´s going on. The system didn´t respond quite well but after a while the desktop showed up. I noticed that my RAM usage was arround 94 - 98%. I intermediatley went into task manager to find out which task using that much RAM. I found no task and FS was about 260 MB. After some time this usage went away and everything was as usual. So does anybody know why this is happening? I´m just curious what´s it.

Just a quick question here. Is it normal for programs like CPU-Z and Core Temp and so on to not show my overclocking settings in the bios? In the bios I have 100x45. In the mentioned software it only shows my CPU at 100x34? Should I overclock in Windows as well or is this normal?

  19. To all the HW Guru and FSX veterans out there, I have a holy grail question to ask: you have all seen this: a high FPS yet a slight stutter here and there that you will notice, and will remind you that your flight is not smooth. Will moving up to Sandy bridge and SSD finally conquers this annoying problem? I currently don't use SSD, my system is a i7-950 OC to 4GZ, FSX is tweaked to make use of more than 2 GB of RAM (using the tool suggested in PMDG MD-1 and win7 64bit. At medium size airport, with Autogen complexity 100%, Autogen 100%, 50% GA and Jet traffics, my Frame count is jumping from 10 to 60 FPS, averaging 30 FPS if I use an external rate limiter, the drop to…

Anyone had any experience with Antec's Formula 7 Nano Diamond thermal compound. The Microcenter Tech claimed it was the newest and best for heat transfer on the market. The old Sliver stuff would let you spread it out real thin and smooth. This stuff is more like heavy thick glue and just clumps when I try to spread it.Is there a trick to this new stuff or do you just place a glob on the middle of the chip and mount the cooler? Never done it that way before.ThanksRick S.

I am currently using a I7-920 running at 3.864 using a H-50 cooler. The system is stable, no BS in over 6 months. In FSX I see it occasionally hit 4.1, but just for a brief second or two. I have added 13 Saitek USB devices and the most recent 6 Flight Information Panels have reduce my FPS significantly running high video settings. I know I am CPU bound and am considering the least expensive upgrade path. I have considered water-cooling but would rather not get into that if a simple CPU change would give me equal or better results. I see Microcenter has 960's available for $179. Could I expect to be able to get the same boost for the 906 that I am getting from the 920…

I got such good advice on my last post about audio (I did pick up a headphone amplifier), thought I would ask another one. I am hearing what I would call low level background noise. Let's see... how to describe this. With no audio playing and volume turned down all the way down I can hear some type of muffled noise (is that what they call "whitenoise"? Hearing this in my headset or my external speakers. Not AC line noise or buzzing but more like inherent "sound" (for lack of a better word). Under normal use (like FSX) not really an issue but if I play music softly I can hear it. Is what I am experiencing bad "signal to noise ratio"?FYI - this is using a brand new A…
