Hard to believe I went to Win 11 kicking and screaming

I went from 10 to 11 a year or so ago, my CPU temps went nuts (averaging 92 before even starting any program much less flight sim) and despite asking everywhere (probably except here lol) I couldn't get a definitive fix to bring temps back down, except to downgrade back to Windows 10 which is what I've run ever since.

If anyone knows how I can get my temps down and keep them down within reason I would gladly move on up back to Windows 11.

Hi,

With XP12 and MS2020 all hooked up with Windows 11 pro I'm about to begin my 3D Mark and Cinebench testing, want to compare to Windows 10 pro. I'll keep an eye on the temps.

  • Win 11 is one of the best ms os's I've used since the early nineties...

  • The fact you "also" went to DLSS probably has more to do with being able to crank the settings than the OS.

  • I just upgraded from Windows 11 to 10 and couldn't be happier :)

Have you tried undervolting the cpu? Those i9s run hot.

No, despite reading up on them very often and watch several tutorial videos, both undervolting and overclocking scare the word not allowed out of me to the point where I don't want to risk damaging anything.

Sorry to OP, didn't mean to throw your topic off course.

Yep, or better cpu cooling. Not sure what you're using but I've had zero issues with cooling both the I9-10900s and the AMD 7950X3D CPUs with the Ice Giant Prosiphon elite cpu cooler.

Due apologies to Mike but modern cpus have in-built protections that make them almost impervious to damage because of wrong BIOS settings. I've undervolted (and overclocked) my i5 and I'm seeing max temps of 70-72C while in 2020.

Fair play, I'm currently about to start descent into Christchurch in the FBW A380 and have been sitting at a steady 60 to 62 degrees the entire flight. If I can achieve similar figures using windows 11 then I may neeed to look into undervolting again and take the plunge.

I resisted Windows 11 until now... I just bought/built a new PC, up and running since last Thursday, and it came with Windows 11 24H2 pre-installed. I'm actually pretty happy with it. I haven't found anything harder* to do with Windows 11, so no deficits compared to my experience on 10, and one notable advantage: networking my FDS MCDU was easier. It was more intuitive setting up the Ethernet, now via a straightforward dialog instead of a series of steps that felt a little like hacking. I had to kind of eat my words as a (now former) Windows 11 denier. The one thing I'd change is the default rounded corners to the windows themselves, but I'll probably get used to that.

*) Well, I did notice that high-DPI Java apps are a little more difficult to scale properly. It may be that there's a solution to this and I just haven't found it yet, but in the meantime it's not a deal-breaker; everything is crispy and readable.

It is essential to run the Chris Titus utility tool and oo shutup as well. Once the tweaks are applied it will disable the telemetry and other nuisances that you get by default. Win 11 with 24H2 patch is actually pretty great afterwards.

What made Microsoft decide that removing the START button at the bottom left corner would be a good idea?

Hi,

Easy enough to put it back.

Open the Windows Start menu and then the Settings app. In Settings, navigate to Personalization, then Taskbar, and open Taskbar behaviors. You’ll see a field labeled Taskbar alignment with a drop-down menu. Change the drop-dox menu from Center to Left.

For like 10 years I've used a brilliant little utility called CLASSIC SHELL. You can have a start menu like xp or 7 if you wish. Not just start button but actual menus with actual programs listed. All of them not just the ones their intrusive ai thinks you want too use.

Yep, just took the update to Windows 11 pro. Then I did this: https://www.pcworld.com/article/541452/make-windows-11-look-like-windows-10.html

Thank you very much for this link! Looks like third time was the charm. I did all this after updating:
- Updated my GPU, chipset, audio, monitor and network devices drivers. With Nvidia, I did a clean install. Some of the devices had different drivers for Win10 and Win11, and I didn't want to rely on the default MS ones.
- Uninstalled and reinstalled RTSS.
- Reset all my GPU settings to what I had.
- Apply all pending required Win11 updates.

Since I also use P3Dv5 for some planes (and there's where I got the issues during my previous Win11 attempts), I also did this:
- Uninstalled and reinstalled P3D client.
- Repaired my FSL libraries (for the FSL birds).

While I could manage by adapting the Start Menu and Taskbar to what I like, my biggest concern was the Explorer and the context menu. I found here some instructions that actually work: https://www.pcworld.com/article/828207/7-frustrating-windows-11-annoyances-how-to-fix-them.html. I'm sure some of these actions were just placebo, but well, my sims now work beautifully in Win 11. In fact, Win11 in my rig works even better than my Win11 laptop. Now I have to apply some of these settings there.

The only remaining annoyance I have is that, when I use Lossless Scaling and I switch windows (from MSFS/P3D to, let's say, Chrome), the task viewer becomes very laggy. If I desist and try again, it works smoothly (so at least this is a workaround). Any way to solve this one?

Hi,

That's something I don't use, can't help with that my friend.

No problem. I found a way: I actually don't use Alt+Tab, but a mouse button mapped to Task View. For Win10, it worked beautifully. For Win11, I remapped it to Switch Applications (the original Alt+Tab) and now it works.

Well, you talked me into it. I am installing W 11 as I type this post. Fingers crossed, that it works.  I also purchased  StartAllBack which I will install, because I hate the start menu  W11 Gui.

PS, took about 40 minutes, PC started up, and everything is working great. I installed StartAllBack and the GUI and start menu appears the same as I had on windows 10...  😀
