separate graphics settings for VR and 2D - how?

I am not going to say how easy it is in another simulator, forum police or alert readers might be worried and detect some hidden  "trolling" attempts in my own thread. 😀

I’m just curious why you feel the need to mention this kind of comment in more than one post?  The only person making use of the word “troll”, more than once, is you. No one here is going to the other forums and talking about what X-Plane does better. Can’t you just discuss X-Plane without the comparisons?

Is there any reason why you guys don't use hand controllers in XP11/12? I think using my hands and muscle memory to flick various switches on the overhead panel and even while programming the FMC is one of the biggest advantages over MSFS, where I end using mouse cursor 90% of the times in VR. For me, using mouse to interact with the cockpit is so 90s. Also, mouse cursor takes a bit of FPS in XP11, although not sure how it behaves in XP12.

I prefer external USB hardware devices like Behringer XTouch mini or Saitek panels, even for VR, cost 88 €: I find pressing physical buttons easier than trying to aim at them with hand controllers.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

Yes, I'm planning to get that little device, looks very practical. But I can't shake the feeling that, in VR, I would always end searching for a specific button by touching for at least 5 to 10 seconds, so I'd rather use controllers to fiddle with AP, and that works pretty good in Toliss.

just finished my first VR flight in x-plane 12, and now listen up: it was fantastic. Yes I know, who would have thought. I attribute that to the nicer clouds and OrbX's True Earth for Washington which I had forgotten I had bought last year before x-plane12, I tought it looked even better than MSFS, but I wasn't going to say that here, since that is trolling, as we know.😀

1) is there a way we can have separate settings for VR and for 2D flying like in other competing games? the reason I ask is because fps were down to a shocking low of 20 fps in VR down from 57 in 2D, until I remembered I had all in graphics settings on MAX which is a no-no for VR flying.

I've been wondering the same - as my 2D and VR settings are very different.  Bummer they don't have the option yet!

I can't stand the hand wand things.  I've got two with my Reverb G2.  It feels so....unintuitive.  The mouse is only easier because it's how I've been computing for the last 30 or so years.  But I do admit some form of tactile feedback would be better.  Maybe the hand motion stuff will be improving.  I would like to reach my hand out and turn an OBS knob or something.  I know you can use the hand wands and point and rotate but the blue laser is just...ugh...  can't stand it haha.

Who ever said about using the laser? 🙂 I just reach out and "grab" the actual switch or lever with the controller, like the real pilot would do. Same motion, same distances as IRL, of course if the virtual cockpit is exactly 1:1. Using the mouse is just extremely simple, and worst of all an immersion killer. Every switch, knob, button or lever - same motion, reaching out to grab a mouse. But hey, we are all different. If you are not seeking for the ultimate immersion, and use more practical solution, I totally get it. I'm all for mimicking the feel of sitting in the cockpit, and it includes hand action and motion.
I mean VR is all about immersion, actually mimicking being in the sim, sitting in the virtual cockpit, and if I can even mimic the moves around it while operating it like in RL, I'm all for it. Even after your explanation I still struggle to understand.
But hey, we are all different. If you are not seeking the ultimate immersion and use more practical solution, I get it.

Or maybe, it's just all about bad G2 controllers. Quest 2 controllers work perfectly without any tweaks.

This can be done w/ the G2 clickers as well and I do enjoy being able to reach through the throttles to get to the flap lever. Just have to make sure I haven't accidentally moved too close to the desk in the meantime!

To ryanbatc's point, turning knobs does end up being a good wrist exercise to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome. I think that's one area where the finger roll could be better simulated with a flick of the thumb stick.

that's really lame after all these years. 350 watts waste of power when the sim is idle doing nothing waiting in the task bar. I am not going to say how easy it is in another simulator, forum police or alert readers might be worried and detect some hidden  "trolling" attempts in my own thread. 😀

That other simulator, that you're free to return to at any time if power savings are that important to you, was optimized for a single platform instead of three and is thus able to use the odd trick to drive CPU usage down when out of focus.

will have to experiment how well x-plane recovers from and fully restores a saved FLIGHT file.

Don't bother. Saving a flight in-air will spawn you on the next airfield when loading it and switch states are not saved.

wrong. out of focus doesn't help at all. the odd trick is to use the file-load-save menu and to stop there without loading/saving a file. it took me a while to find this undocumented, unintended effect.

"That other simulator, that you're free to return to at any time"

thanks didn't know that was possible. btw: I like variety. I use several simulators, just like I am free not to drink the same wine every day. and still like to comment on their different qualities with my buddies.

"if power savings are that important to you,"

I may be an exception, but I don't like the idea of wasting 500 watts while I am doing other things, as otherwise I can leave my pc on idling at low power. just x-plane causes that problem.

p.s. from now on you can keep your useless comments for yourself. instead of bitter comments, Peroni was more helpful and suggested a little free freeze tool that does the trick that Laminar is not capable/willing to implement for years.

good night and good bye,

enjoy the IGNORE list.

Tested and working fine (so far) with XP12. Will bring down cpu and gpu utilization below 10%

confirm, works like a charm. x-plane utilization 0-10 % load. just what the doctor ordered. if a freelance user can do it, Laminar should/could have done it long time ago.

Now at 500 watts? Your story keeps changing. Very confusing.

On my system, XP still behaves identically to the other sims. Still confused as to what you're doing wrong here.

Also on my system, this does nothing different. Not sure what you're doing wrong here. Might be a linux vs windows thing?

So no improvement? You said earlier the default pause left the system at 5-10% and you're still claiming 10%. Should be 0% all the time? This story isn't adding up very well.

Yeah, it's awesome that LR enables 3rd party developers like this.

I have never used VR in anything, and as my eyes point in different directions... 🥴

However, I do use X Organizer. (I ought to have a function key for that claim!)... Would one be able to use XOrg to launch XP with appropriate VR settings?
